Whole families standing on the 13.11 Sheffield to Manchester train. Far too few carriages as ever. How I hate travelling by public transport in this country.
Big day today for ending centuries of secrecy about who owns our land!
A new government consultation will propose revealing who owns the vast majority of England and Wales.
To get this over the line, I’ll need your help to send in supportive evidence!

Of all the bbc presenters, Webb’s politics are the easiest to read - because he puts them in newspapers and doesn’t even try to hide them in broadcasts
His politics are also mind numbingly predictable
Pro-Europeans really need to get their act together if they're going to sieze the opportunity which is being presented here. Press and broadcasters reverting right back to their previous position from 2016, with zero update.

It's not just about climate chaos.
It's also about landscape chaos.
The damage we do to the land's hydrology is layered on top of the damage we do to the atmosphere.
Our mismanagement of land commits us to a cycle of flood and drought.
We can change this, as explained here.
Please read. Thanks.
We need to calm the flood-drought climate whiplash 🌦️
In the national conversation around climate resilience, Britain’s water crisis is almost always framed as two separate emergencies.

“For years, we failed to fulfill our duty. We kept silent, turned a blind eye, reported events one-sidedly, and failed to ask the necessary questions. For that, we owe our viewers an apology,” news anchor Goran Eror said.

Climate emissions resulting from approving drilling at Rosebank, expanding Heathrow airport, watering down UK’s EV targets, cutting heat pump grants would be 402m tonnes of CO2 over the next 25 years
Greater than the annual emissions of 106 coal plants

I’m seeing people reacting by pointing out that he’s obviously wrong. I appreciate that, but it’s also a pointless exercise.
The problem isn’t that he’s wrong. The problem is that this is normal in American politics — and it’s been normal for a while.
RFK: "There's five hundred million Arabs in the world. And yet they don't produce science. They don't win the Nobel Prize. They don't win the Fields Prize. They don't win the Wolf Prize. They don't produce literature."
As I suggested for @thebulwark.com this fall, RFK Jr is a eugenicist at his core. It’s why he talks about autism like it’s contagious. It’s why he want to deprive people of SSRIs.
And of course it’s why he’s saying that “Arabs don’t produce literature.”
He’s a eugenicist and a fascist, simple as.

This went on for the rest of the full hour, at which point the BBC apologised for having to go to the weather and urged viewers to follow continuing live coverage on iPlayer.
Forty-one minutes of unfiltered, unchallenged propaganda by a far right party with 8 MPs, now third in the polls.
Discuss.
BBC News just interrupted its coverage to go, live, to Nigel Farage - a man with no contitutional standing in our setup - responding to the budget - a document which nobody has seen yet.
WHY
A summer of extreme heat, reservoirs running dangerously low and fears of water shortages before Christmas.
The weather today may feel reassuring, but one wet spell won’t undo months of drought.

🧵Yesterday, British Columbia elected a Conservative majority government that ran on a platform of tax cuts and accelerating the pillaging of nature, or what the party calls “natural resources exploitation.” They also ran on attacking Indigenous sovereignty and trans rights.
My reporting on the student movement in Serbia last summer. They kept at it, amazingly, for two years. And they won.

Quick calculation: taking Penguin Random House industry benchmark of 0.33 kg emissions per book = a little below 2000 tonnes. Mike Berners-Lee estimate of 1 kg per book = 6000 tonnes, so still a 9000 tonne overestimate from your Planeteater Data Centre guy.
"So Sally Rooney has published six and a half million books - that's quite a lot of books, well done - but that's about 15,000 tonnes of emissions."

Local authority tree planting is down 45%, and the trees we do plant are heavily imported, bringing biosecurity risks with them.

Solar has overtaken nuclear. A decade ago it supplied 1% of the world's power. In 2025 it met three quarters of global demand growth.
Almost nobody saw it coming. I spoke to Jocelyn Timperley at BBC Future about why.

Le Pen is not Meloni. France is not Italy
Those drawing simplistic parallels risk underestimating how disruptive a Le Pen presidency would be — for France, the EU, and wider geopolitics
What is true is that this was a conflict—and make no mistake, this was a conflict; this was a protracted battle in a hybrid war, more than anything—that was largely fought by large numbers of people laboriously working to unfuck the nation's informational environment.
All that hard work to placate the hard right and - surprise! - the hard right still hates the BBC. Maybe restoring journalistic high standards would serve the broadcaster better.
🧵
Wow - this article is bordering on unhinged!
Apparently the BBC is akin to a “North Korean re-education camp” for teaching children about net-zero and covering both the pros AND cons of immigration

We have a lot to learn from it. I have a Brazilian colleague. She was distraught by the first round result, and couldn't do terribly much because she's in the UK. But she immediately made a concerted effort to talk to any of her friends and relatives back home she thought might be on the fence.
Honestly I don‘t have words. What they did is astonishing. And the best thing is - Lula‘s movement will create many more activists and political leaders of the future. Watching friends transform into vocal, visible advocates for progress was so moving.
"Viktor Orbán, U.N. Secretary-General?
Trump officials push the idea of a U.S.-Russia-China joint candidate." Yes, you read that right. www.wsj.com/opinion/vikt...
Hard to transpose electoral lessons from one country / system to another. But the contrast between Lula's broad, majoritarian front (overcoming internal differences & integrating civil society movements) and Europe's fragmented lefts is striking.
💯The case for democracy is not that voters are always right, or wise, or good. It's that they can correct their mistakes.
That's why it's so dangerous to have billionaires controlling the media or regulating the flow of information. It shuts down the immune system of democracy.
I was having conversations with journalists just a few months ago about whether democracy was doomed. Look at this year: Orban defeated. Vukic defeated. Bolsonaro Jr defeated. Trump heading to likely defeat in midterms. That’s the beauty of democracy. Voters can respond. Don’t count it out yet.
If you replace "Fabians" and "globalists" with "Jews" (which is kind of what they mean anyway), this is exactly the same argument as Oswald Mosley's "Peace Fascism"
Of course a win for non-authoritarian leaders or movements does not automatically mean all problems are solved or that authoritarian forces can't come back in future.
But it is worth maintaining hope and optimism, because if people succumb to nihilism and apathy then democracy cannot survive.
