My grandma received this diary as a Christmas gift from her sister 90 years ago when she was 17 years old. Starting tomorrow, I will share the short daily entries from life on her family's farm in Dakota County, MN, using the hashtag #1936diary

Tuesday, October 27, 1936: Mother went to town today. I washed the back porch windows and didn't do much else but tend the chickens & made the meals. #1936diary

Winnewissa Falls in Pipestone National Monument. I love our public lands and want them to remain preserved for future generations, so I’m voting with that in mind. I’ll be voting straight-line Democratic, because it’s the only way to put a check on the movement that wants to sell them off.

Monday, October 26, 1936: I finished with the washing of storm windows today. Ma & Wilfred dug the carrots. This evening I read some magazines from Ethel. #1936diary

Sunday, October 25, 1936: I went to church this morning. The choir sang. Read all afternoon. This evening all of us kids went to L.A. supper. It was the bunk. #1936diary

Saturday, October 24, 1936: We cleaned some of the downstairs today, that is, fall cleaning. This evening Mother, Dad & I went to Uncle Herman Boche's silver wedding. Home at 2 a.m. #1936diary

Three years ago, my dad said that all fish are the same shape. Out of spite, I decided to draw all 478 families of bony fish listed in Nelson 2016. There's still some stuff I need to edit and some fish I want to redraw but, after 985 days, I finished my big dumb fish project last night.

Friday, October 23, 1936: We finished house cleaning the upstairs today. This evening I went to choir practice. There were only 6 there. The Groth "brats" brought me home at 10:00 #1936diary

Thursday, October 22, 1936: Uncle Adolph recovered from his injury & him & Pa are again working on the house. Today we washed some storm windows. Very cold. 30º all day #1936diary

I still don't know if Uncle Adolph hurt his arm or leg (or whether it was actually broken?). But 11 days is definitely a swift recovery! bsky.app/profile/pine...

Tuesday, October 13, 1936: Mother went to town today. This afternoon I helped Pa pick out 40 bu. of spuds. Uncle Adolph hurt his leg Sun. nite so the house will not be finished for awhile. #1936diary

#31DaysofGraves - Mourning As we approach another election and the anniversary of Paul Wellstone’s tragic death, many Minnesotans and others still mourn his passing and what should have been. The “I Voted“ stickers are particularly poignant.

Wednesday, October 21, 1936: Mother & Dad went to town. I house cleaned the entry. Ohmann's (all) & Margaret Briar's(?) were here tonight. We went to bed at 10 bells. #1936diary

Another older Halloween comic. I lost the old file so I recently had to redraw it, and I had a lot of fun revisiting this.

Sunday, October 18, 1936: Went to church this morning. This afternoon Marg & Erwin & I went for a ride. This evening I enjoyed reading the Sunday paper. #1936diary

Saturday, October 17, 1936: We did Saturday's cleaning as usual. I baked a cake & Mother baked coffee cake. This evening Ma & Pa went to Uncle Max Boche's 25th anniversary. #1936diary

Friday, October 16, 1936: We cleaned upstairs and did a few other things. We made sauerkraut. This evening our group served chili con carne & played Bunco at the Walther League, home at 12:45. #1936diary

Thursday, October 15, 1936: Didn't do much of anything today, I guess. This aft I went over to see Christine. This evening Helen F. took me to Lucille Hoffman & Walther Carlson's shower. I won first prize at cards. Home at 1:00 #1936diary

Wednesday, October 14, 1936: I made some tallies this morning. This afternoon I scrubbed. Mother came home & Pa & her picked out 36 bu. of spuds. Retired at 9 because of a cold. #1936diary

Great question. Anyone have ideas? My best guess is she was creating score sheets for card games? An upcoming post mentions she was making them for a party.

From the Oct. 16, 1936 edition of the Dakota County Tribune: "Adolf Ohmann had the misfortune to hurt his left arm Sunday evening. Monday morning he had it X-rayed and put in a cast. Dr. Radabaugh is his doctor."

This was the same edition of the news from Coates and Rich Valley that included other events mentioned in the diary the past few days. Not sure how the leg/arm confusion happened if Henrietta (or maybe her mom?) submitted the report.

Monday, October 12, 1936: I didn't do anything of importance today. This evening we were supposed to have a committee meeting at Groth's but we were locked out. Home at 9:30 #1936diary

From the Oct. 16, 1936 edition of the Dakota County Tribune: "Mrs. Irvin Groth helped her parents pick up potatoes last Saturday. A number of Walther Leaguers went roller skating in Minneapolis on Saturday evening."

Reminds me of our sweet greyhound who watches out the window for my wife to come home after work each weekday.

#31DaysofGraves - Animal Cimitière de Solliès-Pont A longtime favorite of mine. Over the years he has gotten worn down and then been lovingly patched, repainted and patched again. Every dog is a good dog. Especially those continuing to keep a watchful eye.
