open.substack.comWhen ‘Electability’ Is the ExcuseWe say “Black women are the backbone of the Democratic Party.” But there’s also an unspoken rule that comes with it. The praise is fine. The power is not.

The worst politicians in America are about to quote Martin Luther King Jr. You can’t quote “I have a dream” on MLK Day then legislate against that dream every other day of the year.

Talked to a Somali man today who said his mosque last night was surrounded by neighbors ready to protect them against ICE if needed. Made me feel proud to live in this city.

This is how it’s done! @abigailspanberger.com’s first act as Governor of Virginia is to repeal Glenn Youngkin’s executive order that mandated state and local law enforcement cooperate with ICE. More of this please! #LetFreedomRing

A video of ICE agents conducting door-to-door searches today in Minneapolis The homeowner requests a warrant repeatedly, is told they don't require one, then is told they're getting it, then the agents storm in anyway They also point a taser at her to try and disrupt filming

Of course they did, and as someone who's been in front of many juries as an attorney I'll tell you why: jurors hate government overreach more than anything, and this case was such a blindingly obvious instance of serious government overreach that everyone associated with it should probably be fired.

BREAKING: This is huge news, the EU's equivalent of the 🇺🇸Supreme Court's 2015 Obergefell v. Hodges ruling. 🇪🇺Court of Justice just ruled all 🇪🇺countries must recognise same-sex marriages granted in other member states. This effectively legalises gay marriage across 🇪🇺

Is this just an Edmonton thing, or is there a wider phenomenon of fuckery: more and more, it seems red traffic lights are less mandatory and more optional. I drive for a living and every day I see someone run a red light. Mostly on left turns, but sometimes straight, just “fuck it, I’m going.”

This is 10th-grader Arnoldo Bazan. A citizen. Immigration agents grabbed him and put him in a chokehold. "We're from the United States bro!' he screamed. Agents took and sold his phone And when he finally got home hours later, his shirt was ripped, he neck had angry, red welts, and he sobbed.

Yesterday, I wrote about the ongoing resistance to ICE terror in Minneapolis. “With each passing day, networks widen, tactics crystallize, and previously unconnected people find their bravery. […] Yes, we are on our own. But…we are not alone. Take heart, friends. Don't let them see you sweat.”

Mel Buer@melbuer.bsky.social

The reports coming out of Minnesota of the brutality of ICE terror are harrowing. What's clear to me, however, is that the people are rising up to resist this violence head on. Resistance is everywhere. We may be on our own, but we are not alone. "Every time a whistle blows, they don’t win."

As a social movements scholar, I absolutely love the diversity of tactics being developed by each city, reflecting their local flavor Portland kept it weird with inflatable costumes Chicago protected its street vendors by buying up their food each day Charlotte chased ICE agents into the woods
