Folks are debating whether this is satire or a bit, astroturfing or a corporate front group, or an authentic effort to protect billionaires (weird)
I study astroturfing and corporate disinformation campaigns - I have an ongoing project on ballot measure astroturfing - so let's nerd out on this
New recession indicator: Pumpkin displays
I live in a very mixed income neighborhood with residences ranging from section 8 to >$10 million homes and everything in between
In past years, the wealthy houses competed with gratuitous pumpkin displays
This year: *crickets*
Pics are from past years
Update: One house put out 46 pumpkins. A lot more than past years, but it's quantity over quality. Mostly small & tiny pumpkins with a few big ones
I thought the wealthy folks in my neighborhood had realized the optics of decorating with gratuitous amounts of food in this economy, but guess not 🤷♀️

After the first round elections, Congressman André Janones created a WhatsApp channel titled “Lula’s Army.” It ballooned to 10 million people following his commands on how to behave online to counteract Meta’s far-right-favouring algorithms. The right knows how to use socials. We must learn, too.
Lula has flipped the state of Amapa, which he lost to Jair Bolsonaro in the 2022 runoff by 3 percentage points.
He will win it today; he is ahead by 6 percentage points with 99% of precincts reporting. He'd finished ahead by a hair in the first round, 45.7% to 45.7%.
Bolsonaro-friendly mayors appear to be sabotaging public transport on Election Day. Buses aren’t running in Lula-friendly areas, flights and ferries mysteriously canceled. Traffic lights have gone out and people’s power cut in Salvador, indigenous people’s travel restricted
Brazil extended voting hours in lieu of the attempts at voter suppression seen today. We'll know the results soon enough. I hope for all our sakes Lula wins.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Cristiano Zanin ordered a nationwide two-hour extension of voting in today’s presidential runoff, moving the close of polls from 5pm to 7 pm Brasília time.
I haven’t slept a full night in three weeks ahead of the polls opening in Brazil today. I might be shouting into a void here, but if you can spare a few seconds to send good energy towards our elections today and for the largest country in South America to beat fascism, please do so. 🇧🇷
Aside from the international stuff -- in BC we've had civic and provincial elections in the past week, plus the fallout from the Alberta referendum next door. And the US midterms will likely affect us too. So we're already shaken up around here.
NEW POLL: Overwhelming majorities of voters oppose possible efforts to disrupt or deny the midterms. The takeaway?
Be ready to speak out against efforts to delay election certification or block official results — you won't be alone.

I especially appreciate how @julianborger.bsky.social discusses the US the way we tend to write about other countries in crisis - more of this is needed
JUST POSTED: Today at The NYT we are publishing a major investigation into how President Trump used his executive powers to expose millions of Americans to greater cancer risks.
A six month-long investigation built on more than 10,000 pages of FOIA records. Read it

I had a paper at a journal that had 3 reviews. I'm quite certain that one of the reviews was heavily influenced by gen "AI"
On the surface it seemed fine, it was the most positive of the reviews. But once we started digging in and doing revisions, it all fell apart - many points were word salad
A serious weakness in this paper by King and Worthington:
The judges for the AI peer reviews are *not* experts in the field. They are former journal editors but no claim is made to substantive expertise in the reviewed papers.
AI-generated reviews sound good *if you don't know the substance well.*
Some points made absolutely no sense. They talked about things we didn't claim in the paper. Other points used phrases that seemed like technical terms, but I couldn't find any papers that have used them
The editor took the review at face value and I can see why - it sounded good at first glance
It wasn't until we went through the reviews line by line to assess how to revise the paper that it became clear there were major issues
So this study seems flawed - I find it hard to believe "AI" reviews were better than human ones. I believe they SOUND better, but doubt they substantively are

Industries tend to pursue self-regulation when they're facing a potential regulatory threat and/or consumer backlash
It's a dog and pony show designed to prevent regulation with real teeth while calming consumers' fears
This proposal is a joke - it does more to protect the industry than curb it
"...block a model’s release or use only if it poses a foreseeable, imminent risk of more than $1 billion in damages, or of killing or seriously injuring more than 50 people."
The model will only harm 49 people? No problem
Taking out people individually by encouraging self-harm? Carry on
MSNow isn't a primary comms vector for my employer and my children's school. MSNow doesn't portray itself as "the public square" nor do institutions use it that way. Stop pretending you don't know things.
People demanding Zuck be hauled before Congress to explain why No Kings insta was suspended... how would you feel if MAGA GOP hauled MSNow execs to explain why they covered Trump the way they do? Both are editorial choices protected by the First Amendment.
If this annoys you...
Currently 88° in Chicago. In mid-October. We've officially smashed the 10/12 heat record of 85°, which was previously set in 2008
I've heard every summer going forward will be the coolest summer of the rest of our lives as temps keep climbing higher each year. Seems the same may be true of Fall
It's after midnight and still almost 80°. And by Friday, the lows will be in the 40s
Climate change is a wild ride - if only there was something we could do about it 🫠
I don't know why people like fall
4 days ago it was so hot in Chicago I had to turn the air conditioning on. Now I'm trying really hard not to turn on the heat. My dog is bundled under a blanket, wearing a jacket. I can't get my hands to warm up no matter how much I wear
& back to 70s next week 🎢
Seemingly in response to Garvaghy being overruled the Orange Order are escalating with unapproved marches, destroying Irish-language signage and memorials

The last two years of this administration are going to be a blood bath and the only thing to debate is how much of it will be literal and how much will be figurative. Sigh.
What if you see ICE at the polls? (Don't worry! Read on for the plan!)

I love living in Chicago but maybe my least favorite thing is alley honkers
My bedroom faces an alley that people use as a shortcut to avoid a busy intersection
Some people lightly honk as they enter the street to alert cars and peds
Assholes blast their horn the whole alley length. At 3:00 am
Some dude (assuming it's a guy because it's always a guy) is doing laps down the alley, hitting his horn full blast the entire way
Three times now in the last 5 minutes
There are no pedestrians. No cars. It's freaking 3:15 am
Why!?!
Across the US, nearly 60% of college students are women. In highschool, girls are more likely to take AP and IB courses or pursue dual enrollment credits
So to flip the numbers like this took work. Turns out University of Chicago is fine with affirmative action as long as it benefits men
Just to be clear: These different admissions rates are not just a mechanical result of more women applying. The most recent entering class was 58% male and 42% female. That is a choice. chicagomaroon.com/53303/news/u...
The 21-year-old woman told police the assault happened during a party at the Alpha Epsilon Pi house, according to the police report. Her account was backed up by two friends, who reported that they intervened by barging into the bathroom where the attack happened.

We're already seeing food shortages in some parts of the world and it's expected to get worse as the super El Niño progresses - compounded by global fertilizer and groundwater crisises
We can't afford to be losing food because folks thought the internet of things was a good idea
