Our statement on the EHRC Code of Practice.

Today's announcement from NHS England was as bad as we expected. It is cruel and unworkable, and is phrased such that it is likely cost the NHS a vast amount of money as it is subjected to even more gender-critical lawfare. Trans+ people, and the NHS, deserve better than this.

Coming out isn't something you just do once: it's something you do again and again, and it's up to you how and when you do it. No-one should be enslaved by poverty, ignorance, or conformity. To come out is to refute all three - and we're here for you, always. Happy Coming Out Day, everyone. 🧡

Liberal Democrat Conference votes overwhelmingly to oppose the EHRC guidance and restore trans rights! 🎉🏳️‍⚧️

Our chair, Lucas North, speaking to the media this morning about our Restoring Trans Rights motion, passed at Lib Dem Conference yesterday.

We now move to the vote. The conference floor votes overwhelmingly in favour of the motion 🎉

"That motion is clearly carried. Thank you." Now moving on to a debate about wildfires!

Jennie Rigg now summating. Says that Mark "whined on about Nigel Farage" and that Zoe lied when she said trans people hadn't lost any rights. She summarises others' points.

She makes the point that the Brighton Centre itself (our venue) has made toilets gender-neutral due to the unworkability of the guidance.

Zoe Hollowood now speaking. She claims that the motion is a "Trojan horse" that will remove women's rights. Appears to imply that trans people can simply use the facilities of their ASAB (which contradicts the actual guidance).

Imogen Shepherd-Dubey now talking about how the motion is unworkable and discriminatory

Rory Clark now speaking, explaining the scientific evidence behind trans existence

Jude Hasted speaking about how she is affected by the guidance as a gender non-conforming person. Makes the point that no Conference policy can be enough as long as the government, and this party, do not act.

Much louder cheer for the next speaker, Rebecca Jones, who is talking about the absurdity of the law as it has been reinterpreted and the horrible effects on trans people

Rebecca says she doesn't want to be a culture war, and just wants to get on with life in quiet dignity. She says that's why we should support the motion.

Mark says equalities law will be removed if Farage wins. Claims Kamala Harris lost because of Trump's ads about trans people.

Mark basically is claiming that we can't win if we support trans rights. He is then cut off by the chair for going over time.

Now Mark Johnstone speaking. Hall is much more muted.

Mark trying some audience participation. Asks who wants Farage to win. Confusion on the conference floor.

Bernice Roust now speaking. She says her response to the conference theme "why we care, why we fight" is that she's autistic and trans, and so many have fought for her. She blames the rollback of trans rights on far right propaganda, especially from the US. "We are Liberal Democrats, and we care!"

Bernice a first time speaker by the way!

Lucas North moving the motion They're saying the guidance has caused fear, uncertainty and exclusion, and that it's not an abstract debate. Sets out the negative impacts.

Huge applause on the conference floor for Lucas as they set out what the motion is calling for. You can see the highlights in our other posts!

Exempting broadly-defined "health" services from this bill would be a bit like exempting "fuel" services from a bill about CO2 reduction. There must be no carve-outs or loop holes for abusive practices, in healthcare or otherwise, for this to be anything like what has been promised, for years.

The EHRC Commissioner repeatedly said that the system that we have has worked well for decades. I challenged the Commissioner on why then change was needed that alienates trans people from their fundamental rights.

Thank you to @cajardinemp.bsky.social and @alexkbrewer.bsky.social for your sterling work on the Women & Equalities Committee session today. 🧡 Very clear that the EHRC chair was out of her depth and unheeding of the damage done by this new guidance. Also clear that the law needs to change, ASAP.
