You can tell it was a rush job because he didn't even consider that instead of a man wearing a helmet it could be seen as a birdman holding a baseball bat.

“It was fast.” An annual post as the World Series opens: From 2008, writer Paul Lukas (Uni Watch) interviews retired graphic designer Jerry Dior (1932-2015) about his creation of the MLB logo in 1968. ⚾️ Full Q&A: espn.com/espn/page2/story?page=lukas/081105

In 2022, the @minnesotareformer.com published a seven-part explanation of how Minnesota elections work authored by yours truly. Changes since then are generally minor, so the series still is relevant. If anyone has anything they want an update on or any remaining questions, please ask. 🧵

Show up at the polls w/fluorescent vests & whistles? Cruise around polling place in car, bike or foot? Think how that looks to Jo Median Voter who has never seen that outside their polling place before. Remember how scary the trucks felt during the Uprising? Don’t do initimidators’ work for them.

Digging into the mayor's recommended budget...if the MPD training and wellness center was so critical to the settlement agreement why didn't he override CLIC in his capital budget recommendations?

So we're going set an appropriately high operating license fee to make up for all the tax money that workers won't be paying when they lose their jobs (income tax) and properties (property tax)?

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey@mayorjacobfrey.bsky.social

Requiring a driver in a driverless car doesn’t make sense. Minneapolis is open for business, open to innovative technology, and open to a variety of transportation options. Thoughtful regulation for safety is necessary, but not through a backdoor ban. kstp.com/kstp-news/to...

This overtime abuse should be garnished back to us over a period of a few years. Completely unacceptable that they're gonna get away with this theft with less than a slap on the wrist.

What a breakdown in democracy that we’ve ceded control of AI to tech sociopaths, an amoral marketplace, all manner of grifters up and down and in and outside of government, while the citizenry is just left to sit around and watch Pandora’s Unboxing Video.

So we're supposed to believe none of that financial mess happened in the First Precinct downtown, where current chief Bill Peterson previously served as an inspector? Let's see the overtime he approved.

In Minnesota, bigfoot would need to swear they are a US citizen and is over 18 (under penalty of perjury) and would likey need a voucher verifying their residence. Unless they could prove residence in the other ways allowable under MN law.

I came up with some more inane bullshit for everyone to argue about!

Um if we're getting federal forfeiture funds I want that going right into the general fund.

Aunt Fancy@auntiefancy.bsky.social

Purchased w forfeiture funds? So they were bought with stolen money. Cool. "The motorcycles cost about $136,500 to purchase and outfit, department spokesman Sgt. Garrett Parten said, which he called an “unbudgeted expense using federal forfeiture funds.”"

The degree to which police departments have financial incentives to over-respond to situations where their presence is straight up not needed at ALL, because they can make a bunch of extra money for zero personal risk, is something that even the pro-cop brigade should be concerned about.

alec karakatsanis@equalityalec.bsky.social

THREAD. Did you know that Minneapolis police deployed 101 personnel to a 7-person vigil held one morning at Renee Good's memorial? The cops generated $1.92 million in overtime cash for themselves.

The city council never asks a second favor once they've refused the first, understood?

Minnesota Star Tribune@startribune.com

The Minneapolis Police Department's horseback police unit, the last in Minnesota, quietly disbanded after the department's barn lease expired last month. The mounted patrol unit's end follows years of attempted budget cuts by the City Council as some members questioned the expense.

You'd think after 2 or 3 of these, there'd be a list of houses to not send swat to until the need for it has been verified.

Chris Ingraham@cingraham.bsky.social

Insane story: Milwaukee police swatted an innocent couple 55 times in a single year, only stopping after they filed a lawsuit. "Body camera video shows one officer pointed a gun at the couple's door on their fourth response in a single day." www.tmj4.com/about-us/lig...

You do this when you need spin control on the questions. When you need to give the media some lead time to side with you ahead of the troubling answers.

Chughtai says MPD was ready to present today but was directed by the mayor not to.

I am a math teacher (now professor). I generally dislike math textbooks, usually because they're organized poorly, but sometimes are just flat out offensive. I just encountered an example now. "Vanessa's doctor put her on a sensible diet and exercise plan to get her back to a healthy weight."

Being that guy, I feel obligated to respond. MPD is like when your kid racks up hundreds of dollars of pointless in-app purchases and you can't afford your medical bills (health department) and at the end of the ordeal you don't actually have anything that benefits your household.

Wedge LIVE!™@wedge.live

Guy just testified to the BET that the park board's 2027 budget request (which the mayor has cut short by $3 million) is less in percent terms than what streaming services are putting to their customers. I want to ask what analogy he would use for MPD eating all of our money.

My personal read on these provisions is a continued execution of the plan to increase mayoral soft power which we've seen permeate other processes in the city. Fox example the charter commission exploring a revision to the high ranking appointment process earlier this year.

Also really weird that CLIC wouldn't get to elect our own chair on year one. "The Mayor shall designate the first Chair of the Committee before its first meeting" This makes sense for a new body, but it will have existing membership who knows who would be an effective chair to lead our work.

Personally I don't like that a department that reports into the mayor is proposed to get 8 seats plus the mayor getting 2. If you consider these seats to be mayorally influenced, the mayor's "power" on CLIC would be 10/23 = 43% vs today's 7/33 = 21%.

Local media reports that I'm "smart as hell". 🧠

Wedge LIVE!™@wedge.live

The people who end up on CLIC tend to be smart as hell because that's who is interested in this stuff. I don't like the idea of the executive branch wrestling control of yet another thing, even if it's just an advisory body.

Based on this comment and email replys I've received, I think we have the BET votes for full park funding. Olson, EHB, Payne and Chughtai. Brandt was in favor of 4% but not full. Frey would probably vote along his budget.

taylr@taylordahlin.com

chughtai defends minneapolis parks for all they do to prevent youth violence and how they must be fully funded. and if they are not, that the impact will be felt immediately

Or if anyone asks there were more than one spider man and we can't know that the person who was arrested was the same one who punched Lang.

Reminder to everyone posting videos of spiderman. The police and attorneys offices are going to use your videos as evidence in Spiderman's likely assault trial. Maybe take 'em down?
