My only contention is this sentence & the framing of higher ed journalism in general: “Highly selective colleges wanted to keep recruiting (and admitting) globally even as their governments were limiting the mobility of foreign students.” The tension extends well beyond highly selective colleges.

I haven’t slept a full night in three weeks ahead of the polls opening in Brazil today. I might be shouting into a void here, but if you can spare a few seconds to send good energy towards our elections today and for the largest country in South America to beat fascism, please do so. 🇧🇷

I need the Rays to get it together. I want a seven game series, since no one knows when baseball will be played again when a champion is crowned.

In this vein I find it helpful to remember Elizabeth Anderson's argument that the point of education is not to reward merit, but to create it.

the other thing is that conservatives resolutely do not see the purpose of education as providing social mobility but as reifying and deepening existing inequalities of status. they are as hostile to low income students getting admission to elite institutions as they are black ones.

I was ready to support him until I read this. Get ready for more of the same.

This is exactly the right approach — openly mock the bigots as small-minded and cowardly and weak and proudly embrace diversity as a sign of our strength and success

I know America. I know that, in America, we believe in a country big enough for all of us. So, JD Vance, don't you dare come from Ohio to lecture me. You don't know a damn thing about America.

Yes. But not all dominance displays are the same. El-Sayed's first stabs at them were taunts and calls for bench press contests and those didn't work; they seemed juvenile, like Pete Hegseth. What Ossoff has is both dominance and gravitas, and that is effective. He says, I'm the grown-up here.

JD Vance on H-1B recipients: "It's one thing if you were to bring in a person like Elon Musk. I think 99% of American citizens look at somebody like Elon Musk and say, 'if that person wants to come in and build something great in the US, we support that.' But if you're bringing in an accountant... "

Albernaz needs to learn to praise in public and criticize in private. That’s what’s embarrassing.

Craig Albernaz said he was “embarrassed” by the choice from Jeremiah Jackson to swing at the first pitch after Chad Patrick threw nine balls. Albernaz said it ultimately “falls on me” and “will be addressed.”

I hate doing the "a rollback of trans rights is the gateway for a rollback of women's rights" thing because trans rights are human rights in and of themselves, whatever the impact on cis women. But goddamn I wish more cis women had a sense of history and self preservation.
