One criticism I see against (letter-based) word games is that people who are better at word games will do better at word games. And, like, yeah? I don't recall this criticism against many other game genres. Nothing like "people better at area majority will win this area majority game."

There are always exceptions - crokinole, Galaxy Trucker, and so on. But can you believe there's only one "trivia" game in the BGG top 500 (Hitster), and one "spelling" game in the top 1000 (Paperback)?

I think decades of Scrabble and Trivial Pursuit have made people not want to engage with wide swaths of good games, which leads to less interest in developing interesting games in these categories, which spirals down into stagnation and (especially w.r.t. trivia) only the lamest stuff getting sales.

Strategy gamers in general seem to be tilted against games where optimal play can't be purely derived from the rulebook. Uncertainty/randomness is okay (depending how it's packaged). Games involving real-time elements, dexterity, trivia/knowledge, or other skill has a higher barrier to acceptance.

A week ago I sent out 10 pitch emails/form submissions to publishers about my board game. 9 of them have given only silence, 1 of them responded saying it looked cool, but they have a similar game coming out soon. Only one view on the YouTube video I sent out in the pitches. Siiiigh

Sorry! may be a drag to play but I will hear no ill word about its title typeface. I didn't know the name of "Advertisers Gothic" before just now but I will follow it into battle.

What's your favorite game from the first quarter of the 20th century? I think it might actually be Pit, just because the 2-player ruleset of Rook I've played is probably from decades later.

In elementary school, I made my friend a fill-in-the-blank worksheet quizzing him on the intro songs to You Don't Know Jack questions. He had no interest in this, even though I thought it was amazing.

QUESTION OF THE DAY: This sounds like a joke question, but it isn’t. If it doesn’t apply to you, fine. But it’s a serious question with different levels of meaning. And I am genuinely curious. When did you first realize you were weird?

uhh i was digitizing a box of old VHS tapes for my uncle... you guys ever hear of something called "The Mayonnaise Channel"??

Yesterday, my kid and I started playing One Step from Eden coop. It's pretty cool so far, although I wish it were easier to tell what spells I could cast - the little icons without labels are hard to associate with abilities, at least for us. Still enjoying it though!

Stop, Steam Sale, do not tempt me with your half-price Civ 7! I will stay strong and wait for a full expansion to be released, and then for THAT to be on sale! Away with ye! I have no reason to trust this or any Civ game to be fully enjoyable without an expansion!

Browns, now 3-1 somehow, face the Jets next week. In ‘23 Flacco capped off a 4 game win streak with a win over the Jets - let’s see history repeat itself! (And if it repeats itself with a 4th string QB starting, all the better! It’s Taylen Green szn)

Of the 25 worst-ranked games on BGG released in the last 25 years, they fit into one of these buckets: Random/silly party games Bad trivia games Bad versions of mass market classics Bad licensed games Scams Disappointments from well-known designers Which bucket interests you most to learn about?

Top played games so far in 2026 (all in-person): 1. LotR Trick-Taking (Fellowship + Two Towers), 30 plays 2. Compile, 20 plays 3a. So Clover, 11 plays 3b. Hitster, 11 plays 5a. Rosetta, 9 plays 5b. Jibber Jabble, 9 plays I've got 27 titles I've played at least 5 times; I had 29 through all of 2025.

10. What word for the violent fragmentation of a larger region into smaller, mutually hostile states, which entered wide use in the aftermath of WWI, is drawn from the name of a peninsula whose own wars, fought in 1912-13, gave the term its original meaning? BAJA BLAST #LL110 #bestwronganswers

Evening plans: - Make Prue Leith's bobotie for the family - Play some Chants of Sennaar with the kids - Watch some Witch Hat Atelier for the kids (my eldest has a huge crush on Qifrey) - My wife and I pretend it's cold enough to drink some tea while watching the NFL season kickoff!
