As has been the case for decades, nearly all the cases alleged that the pregnant person used a substance during pregnancy. We know this approach does not work. Criminalization only worsens health outcomes and makes people scared to seek care.

We identified 70 cases in which pregnancy loss was criminalized, including miscarriage, stillbirth, and newborn death. This is dangerous. Pregnancy loss should be treated as a medical event, rather than grounds for investigation or arrest.

The truth is, we have a nationwide maternal health crisis that is impacting Black women most. Restrictive abortion laws are only making it worse. We need a world where people are fully supported in the decisions they make for themselves and their families, not forced to make desperate ones.

All of us at Pregnancy Justice walk the path paved by Gloria Steinem. We owe her for relentlessly fighting to change the world for us and for nurturing the next generation of feminists. Here is our staff at her home in 2022, just one of many moments when she welcomed the next generation to join her❤️

Down from Dover was kept off the radio because Dolly's record label saw single motherhood and stillbirth as too controversial at the time. She still released it on her album. The story is devastating and relatable, and we thank her for giving voice to women with similar experiences. 💖

This is how fetal personhood laws and abortion bans go hand in hand. They are used to arrest and punish pregnant people and take away bodily autonomy - whether they give birth, have an abortion, or lose their pregnancy.

Black August remembers key figures in the Black liberation movement. It’s a time of reflection and deep study of Black political thought from freedom fighters. Here are some books to add to your reading lists!

Alexee needed medical care after experiencing a pregnancy loss. Instead, her life was left hanging in the balance as medical staff and police coldly accused her of being a murderer. This is a powerful win, not only for Alexee, but for anyone whose pregnancy loss is turned into a criminal event.

Since Roe fell, advocates have rallied around telehealth abortion as a way to serve pregnant patients—especially in ban states. And in May, the fight to protect mailed abortion pills reached the Supreme Court. But telehealth is not a solution, this op-ed argues—it’s a bandaid.

HUGE shoutout to the activists and abortion storytellers who are fiercely advocating to remove barriers to getting abortion care later in pregnancy in MA, incl. friends of the podcast Kate Dineen @reproequitynow.bsky.social, Jeanette Kincaid @dupontclinic.bsky.social, @patientforward.bsky.social! <3

Good news! At a time when many states are imposing dangerous and cruel restrictions on bodily autonomy, we appreciate the Massachusetts House for moving to protect patients' access to vital health care. Abortion care is life-saving care. www.wbur.org/news/2026/07...

Reproductive health care should be there when a person needs it. But for many people with disabilities, barriers to accessibility can put care out of reach before an appointment even begins. See how Ipas is putting disability justice into action: buff.ly/BCYasJG

🚨BREAKING: 150+ House & Senate Dems introduce Right to IVF Act. Every person deserves the freedom to build their family on their terms. For millions of Americans, IVF is the path to parenthood, and RFC and our Members are pushing to protect your access to the fertility care you need.

Congresswoman Lori Trahan@trahan.house.gov

Like so many people in our country facing fertility challenges, my husband and I turned to IVF as our last hope to have kids. After years of appointments, injections, and setbacks, and thanks to our remarkable physicians, we have two beautiful daughters. (1/3)

Today is #BlackWomensEqualPay Day, and our message is clear: PAY BLACK WOMEN. Black women working full-time, year-round are paid only 65 cents for every dollar white men are paid & face a wage gap in basically every occupation. That gap costs them more than a million dollars throughout their lives.

Medication abortion is popular and the anti-abortion movement can’t stand it. The only takeaway from this hearing is that they’ll STOP AT NOTHING to try and ban abortion nationwide—even pressuring the Trump admin to misuse Victorian-era laws to do it.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Ted Cruz is the latest of a string of Republican senators to push an agreeing Blanche to ban the mailing of mifepristone. They're coming for abortion pills next.

The mothers of Black newborns are reported to police for alleged substance use during pregnancy around 2.5 times more often than those of white babies. No one should be unnecessarily investigated, punished, and separated from their newborns by the family policing system.

Thanks to Act 292, “The Unborn Child Protection Act,” Wisconsin is one of the most punitive states in the country for pregnant people who test positive for substances. Fetal personhood laws such as these are harmful for anyone who can get pregnant.

The policing of medical cannabis for pregnant women in Alabama is highly invasive. Policies that simply don't exist for other medical conditions are forced on pregnant people. Where you live should not change how you’re treated during pregnancy.

Post-Dobbs, the masks are off, and the anti-abortion and prenatal personhood movement is more aggressive than ever. Last year, we saw 15 bills introduced that would criminalize women for seeking abortions. This year, at least 12 were introduced or carried over.
