Text I’ve sent to BBC that they have not read out in relation to coverage of the UK budget. once again we see the myth of “the government is like a household” and “there’s no money”.the government does not create money for funding services via taxes,it creates money by spending it into existence

“Racism appears then , not as an incidental detail, but as a consubstantial part of colonialism. It is the highest expression of the colonial system, and one of the most significant features of the colonist.” P.140

Tonight’s reading : “everything would be perfect if it weren’t for the natives. But the colonialist realizes that without the colonized, the colony would no longer have any meaning. This intolerable contradiction fills him with a rage, a loathing, always ready to be loosed”p.132

Not one mention of the #climatecrisis either from PM Burnham or the journalist who wrote this … so we’re left with a piece that addresses the effects and not the causes of the “unexpected events” … as if they ‘just happen’ … banning disposable barbecues all over again

Last night, a group of our PLDP Alumni met with former Health Minister, Mike Nesbitt MLA, for a wide-ranging discussion on his career, how to make a difference, health policy, and his upcoming memoir. Our thanks to Mike for taking the time to talk to the next generation of policy leaders.

Wow, this paper feels long overdue "Across climate policy, public health, and economic governance, we demonstrate a consistent pattern: powerful actors reframe structural problems as individual failures, behavioral science supplies the intellectual tool kit,...

Note the juxtaposition: “activists say, developers say” Missing: climate science. They’re not centring the actual science because it would prove that the ‘activists’ are supporting science while the government is supporting more disasters bsky.app/profile/prof...

A less highlighted aspect of the academic jobs crisis is an acute shortage of alternative employment, with hundreds of applicants routine for each advertised post, and employers who don’t like PhDs because they are considered overqualified and difficult.

Ooh. I wrote a thing a few years ago about the Peace Pledge Union’s monument in Central London, and the involvement in setting it up of Bill McIlroy, a secular humanist originally from Ballynahinch.

Economy minster in the North of Ireland Caoimhe Archibald celebrating economic growth (up 1%), yet we have almost 40% of households in fuel poverty, 19% child poverty... maybe we should focus on the welfare of people - the ends - NOT economic growth - at best an imperfect means to those ends?

This piece in the Conversation misses the point: it is an AND not an OR. This summer’s climate shocks will put climate action on the agenda AND responsible climate action must include disaster response and recovery, along with building resilience everywhere! theconversation.com/can-the-sear...

theconversation.comCan the searing European summer put climate action back on the agenda – or will disaster response take over?Wildfire, drought and heat have made climate change impossible to avoid this northern summer. But will authorities tackle the cause – or the symptoms?

1/ So Rosebank would pay to store 62.5 MtCO2 (2.5/yr) whilst Rosebank generates 250MtCO2 in same 25 years Even if CCS works (a very big IF), then this is a great deal for Equinor, Shell, Ithaca Energy, Delek Group and Eni AND a very bad deal for the planet. One reason why CTBO is non-starter

The new government has a knotty problem on energy. It needs fiscal space to help billpayers, it want's new infrastructure to underpin the industrial strategy, and it will need decide on Rosebank/Jackdaw In a new piece for @ippr.org Stephanie Loo and I work through a potential part of the solution..
