A related rant is that it is absolutely insane that faculty have to navigate complicated platforms to book their own travel, submit their own reimbursements, and now (at my uni) book their own rooms. In the name of cost-cutting by removing the salary of an admin person or two who are experts at...

One waaayy underdiscussed cause of the AI-pocalypse in education is that both students and teachers have way too much work to do. Being a student is mostly a full time gig, especially in college. But tons of students work to pay tuition now. Teaching was a full-time gig 40 years ago, but the ...

..navigating these systems, it now falls on individual faculty, whose salaries are 1.5-3x the admin salary, to do, and it takes them 3x as long because they aren't doing it all the time and therefore aren't experts. So on paper it looks good for the budget, but is unbelievably wasteful in practice

...these shortcuts impede learning. Each step (except AI) is a small step, probably inconsequential. But added up over decades they are huge. Each chipping away at the slow, laborious process of real learning to make time for more and more of what amounts to bullshit work.

The education system might be more resilient to AI if students and faculty both had a reasonable amount of work so that a tool to massively shortcut that work was not so appealing. A drowning person will do anything to keep their head above water. AI feels like a life raft for the overworked

multiple choice questions for the exam, assign a group project instead of individual project, general feedback for the class instead of specific feedback per student, etc. For students, it's over-focusing on what's graded and what's on the exam vs learning broadly, plus now AI use to speed up...

There isn't enough time to just focus on learning bc they're working, and in more activities to look better on CV/resume. Both have too much to do, it only adds over time, and so tools that shortcut anything ("it can write my paper for me!" "it can grade stuff for me!") will be appealing. All ...

... study march of admin-imposed added responsibilities - while never taking away responsibilities - has made teaching (uni, HS, or grade school) much more than a full-time job. Doing it all is impossible, so students and teachers both find little shortcuts where possible. For teachers, it's more...

Interrogating my own experiences as an adult now estranged from both parents, it’s become clear to me that there’s a deep, probably biological, drive to maintain a relationship with one’s parents, and that drive leads to giving the parent many, many opportunities for reconciliation. So if a child…

I keep seeing this Semafor graph that seems to show the Trump administration’s effect on international visits is comparable to the pandemic. My first thought was “that can’t be true” and indeed it is not. This is monthly data. We only have to Jun/Aug 2026. The lines are over-fitted to the months.

I once assessed a veteran for PTSD who had seen multiple combat tours and had seen people die in combat. He had PTSD - not from combat, but from witnessing a public execution while on leave in a nearby country. He saw it as so barbaric it was difficult to reconcile

I propose a system where you can click a button to charge anyone who texts or calls you $0.25. Bye unwanted texts & calls forever. Externalities? Don't know/don't care. It's like mosquitos. Would there be externalities to eradicating mosquitos? Don't care. I'm not itchy anymore. Roll the dice baby

Without actually sending your scripts/data to other people, it can be hard to ensure others can easily use your materials. This looks like a great solution. Another cool feature is that users can also tweak scripts to see how conclusions can change when different parameters are used.

9/ A month in, I was betting so much that DraftKings’ quick-tap deposit buttons had increased to $500, $750 and $950, making it even easier to mindlessly transfer money into my account. I was also getting pummeled with push alerts inviting me to bet more.

Hey, ProPublica reporter Jake Pearson here. I’m taking over the account to tell you about my new story. For months, I posed as a problem gambler on DraftKings to test the company's "responsible gaming" safeguards. Spoiler alert: They made me a VIP — and I lost $10K. Here's how it all went down. 🧵

Just as the “DJ as celebrity” movement (vs “weird nerd on the decks in the corner”) did a lot of damage to electronic music and real DJs, the “academic as celebrity” movement (vs “weird nerd in their lab in the basement”) has done a lot of damage to science and real scientists
