I see the Appellate Division of the New York State Supreme Court is not disciplining lawyers who openly abuse the power of their NY bar license. This is the kind of thing that should result in swift disbarment.

How an intellectually disabled person would understand the Nobel Prize.

“Denmark? Take ’em. Sweden. Norway, I don’t think so because I didn’t get the Nobel Prize,” Trump continued. “I don’t want anybody from Norway, I don’t want anything to do with Norway.” trib.al/mb1aTdB

It's the ruling class's only remaining move to try to preserve the neoliberal order they built. But McCain-Romney Republicans are even more discredited than establishment Dems like Rahm Emanuel are. It can therefore lead only to MAGA's political victory, which he prefers to a more equitable society.

This is funny because he's only revealing that Republican senators have been demanding that Trump link his stupid construction projects to the military so they can have a reason to say why they support it.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Trump on his arch: "It's got a military component. Everything has a military component nowadays. I have to do that to satisfy my senators."

We must reform state bar associations in the US. Screening bar aspirants for moral character and fitness is already something that all states do. Clearly, the screen is woefully deficient, since it fails to reject people who will so readily abuse the power that comes with the license.

NEW, NYT: More action from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Middle District of California that is not based in law and runs counter to DOJ policy. DOJ is threatening local elections officials in CA after DOJ did not get what they wanted from their BS lawsuit. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/23/u...

Easy to get away with when your political competition is the discredited Democratic Party establishment. And that's on Democratic Party voters for letting them hang around well past their expiration date.

Raw Story@rawstory.com

Zeteo’s Asawin Suebsaeng noted that Trump’s 2024 closing message included a boast about golfer Arnold Palmer’s genitals, and he won.

It's only stupid if you're trying to change anything. The Democratic Party establishment is part of and serves the ruling class. Losing an election to another faction of that same ruling class is not a real problem. A real problem is losing control of the Democratic Party to a political movement.

Matthew Sheffield@matthew.flux.community

As many have posted, this view is morally monstrous. But it also is incredibly stupid because it misunderstands several things: what polls show, how we can interpret them, what politics is for, and how political change works. In other words, this standpoint is astonishingly stupid.

This explains why the Dem establishment and its lackeys like Yglesias seek to confine political action within (certain) existing public opinion. They will not do advocacy because their goal is to keep things the same for a ruling class that presently has tremendous political & economic power.

Worth observing that the Democratic Party establishment—one that is still very much in control of the Democratic Party—fully participated over the last 4+ decades in creating this oligarchy that is now waging war against the American working public. Democratic voters have never held them to account.

NEW: Elon Musk gave his super PAC $76 million in just two weeks of October, and more than half of its new candidate spending went to one race: the Texas Senate fight against James Talarico. He’s now given more than $445 million this cycle, far more than he spent electing Trump.

We’re back with our second story about how Trump’s purge of the FBI killed a sweeping bribery probe in D.C. This time, we take you to South Carolina, where two powerful politicians escaped scrutiny: Sen. Lindsey Graham and Rep. James Clyburn. THREAD 👇

Right-wing billionaires now own the Washington Post, the LA Times, CNN, CBS News, virtually every local TV station, virtually every news radio station, most local newspapers, X, Facebook, Threads, and TikTok. (Did I miss any?) They own almost the entire information environment.

Foreign policy has nothing to do with "national security" in the sense of protecting the domestic public from harm. Neither Russia nor China presents any threat to any American family. "National security" is just shorthand for ruling class imperial objectives.

The idea that Trump would manufacture physically indistinguishable versions of himself to perform his public duties while he stays home (and makes love to one of them) is essentially the same comic premise in Charlie Kaufman's Antkind.

The NYT leadership is partly allied with Trump over Zionism, and Zionism is probably its leadership's highest political priority. That's why you get substantial deference to Trump from "liberal" elements of the ruling class.

Perry Bacon@perrybaconjr.bsky.social

"Democracy dies unless Maggie Haberman has access to senior Trump aides and McConnell/Romney Republicans respect us" is essentially the argument Times editors have been making since 2018. I can't tell if they actually believe that or it's a pretext for their decision not to change their approach.

It's just a shame the Democratic Party base is going to squander it by failing to discipline their reps into passing sweeping reforms that will materially help working people. And that MAGA will survive as a consequence.

There's a Politico (lol) piece entirely about how Republicans' hope right now is that the polls are all way off and they only get a MILD wipeout and first of all it's full of a bunch of nonsense but the best part is how it ends on this incredible bit:

To be fair, he should be able to since there was absolutely no legal basis for excluding the Fed from the SCOTUS decision overruling Humphrey's Executor. The Fed has a gerrymandered protection. That doesn't make the investigation any less punitive or abusive (or racist), though.

Diminishing individual power is important for democracy not just for judges but also for legislators. This is why the Senate should be abolished (utterly antidemocratic) and the House expanded to at least 5,000 members—even that would not entirely restore individual voter power at the founding.

ElieNYC@elienyc.bsky.social

I disagree, categorically, that adding additional justices, even in a "tit-for-tat" way, is a "race to the bottom." I think having a great many *more* judges is actually good for democracy, representation, ethics, and limiting the importance and power of any individual judge. Furthermore...

Monbiot's argument applies beat for beat to Nazism. Ultimately, both are just ethnonationalist political movements. That's what they have in common and that's what makes them inherently racist. The existence of anti-Zionist Jews throughout every point in history should make this clear.

George Monbiot@georgemonbiot.bsky.social

So you could reasonably argue that an *outcome* of Zionism is racism. But that is not the same as stating “Zionism is racism”. Racism is not where it came from. It is not what motivated the deep yearning for safety, for a refuge, whether 80 years ago or 800.

Raice thinks Americans only need to know what Israelis think is important.

Democrats are going to win big and then do nothing with the Congressional power they win and lose their credibility just in time for 2028. If Democratic voters don't want another Republican Congress in 2028, they are going to have to discipline the Dems they elect now.

Because I lack faith in electoral politics, I could overlook Mamdani abandoning promises to reduce state violence against the poor. What I can't overlook is his right-wing rhetoric endorsing policing as effective public safety policy, because that actively damages movements. He should just shut up.

Macron's mission was always only to serve the ruling class. The French public was always going to resist. What's most confounding in the West is why the public (in any country) cannot seem to organize adequately to at least stop these ruling class servants from gaining power through elections.

"But if the center is now fragmented, it is also due to the corrosive effects of Macron’s style of governance, which he sold in both 2017 and 2022 as conciliatory, but which in practice has proved to be hyper-polarizing. The degree of that polarization is ... on display today." Gift link.

When Justices write stuff like this, they know it isn't true. They are doing ruling class legal PR for the naive professional class who rarely encounter the police state: giving it a refined appearance when it is anything but. They want them to picture men in suits politely questioning people.

"If the person is a US citizen or otherwise lawfully in the United States, that individual will be free to go after the brief encounter. "Only if the person is illegally in the United States may the stop lead to further immigration proceedings." -- Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, 9/8/2025

The reality:

ProPublica@propublica.org

2/ Federal agents have detained at least 70 children and teens who are American citizens. Some were handcuffed or zip-tied. In one instance, a 15-year-old with disabilities was handcuffed outside a school in Los Angeles when agents mistook him for an alleged gang member.

This has always been up to the States, and States historically allowed certain non-citizens to vote (11 of the original 13 allowed it). Residency and property were the primary qualifications, not citizenship. It would not be until 1926 that the last state eliminated non-citizen voting (Arkansas).

It's more that the mass (ruling class) media has to maintain the credibility of the system the ruling class controls. It can't and won't undermine that system. Only if a president gets elected who presents a threat to the ruling class will it begin attacking the system that produced it. (See Corbyn)

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

I for one think it’s bad that the president can just say crazy stuff all day every day and 99% of it doesn’t make the news because we’ve normalized having an insane president

We'll know that some version of a republic has been restored when (if) Hegseth ever is prosecuted. Hegseth's pretty young and there's no limitations period for murder. (But understand the loss of the republic is not a new phenomenon. The ruling class granted itself immunity decades ago.)

Chris Hayes@chrislhayes.bsky.social

Pretty clear to me there’s a very good case against this man for mass murder, and I’m saying that in as measured a fashion as I can. He’s order the killing of 234 people under no plausible war or legal justification. I am skeptical he will ever face legal accountability for til his but he should.
