I’m incredibly excited to serve on this coming term’s Steering Council! Working on CPython has been one of the most rewarding endeavours of my career. I’m so grateful to everyone who voted & honoured that so many placed their trust in me. peps.python.org/pep-8107/

I gotta say, ChatGPT and other LLMs are infinitely better at debugging esoteric computer problems than searching the web, forums, reddit, SO, etc. Case in point: Time Machine was erroring on a particular Dropbox file stored locally, and CGPT helped solve it. Plus it was actually kinda nice!

This announcement comes after several weeks of thoughtful discussion among the SC members. I’d also like to acknowledge and thank my fellow council members, @pumpichank.bsky.social, @gpshead.bsky.social, @pablogsal.com and @emilyemorehouse.bsky.social for their hard work throughout this process.

While it took much deliberation, it’s decisions like this, and the process leading to it, that make serving on the SC so rewarding. Once again I’m honored to serve with these five fine folks.

Uncanny valley x2. I've talked to several plumbers recently whose voicemail goes straight to an AI. They don't tell you they're an AI tho, so after a few Qs & As, I suspect "Dane" and "Madison" of being Not Human. Now I'm trying to trick them without outright accusing.

This transition to a Public Benefit Corporation is a huge milestone for us ✨. I am so excited about the future and the impact we will continue to have on the open source ecosystem.

I doubt Southwest Airlines is here, but I *used* to be a loyal customer. With the announced bag fees and previously announced assigned seat changes, as of today, I'm done. If you want to act like just another airline, that's how I'll treat you.

Okay, before I freak out and delete Firefox everywhere, what's the deal with the new Mozilla terms of service, giving them blanket rights to use that information? Sure seems pretty broad, or at least extremely careless language, for a privacy focused organization.

We’re building a new static type checker for Python, from scratch, in Rust. From a technical perspective, it’s probably our most ambitious project yet. We’re about 800 PRs deep!

🐍📦📜 All the pieces (I use) are now in place for PEP 639 ("Improving License Clarity with Better Package Metadata"). Thanks to contributors and maintainers of at least 6 projects and of course Karolina Surma for the PEP! discuss.python.org/t/pep-639-ro... #Python #PEP639 #PyPI #SPDX #licensing

Mini-PITA: on a macOS 15 laptop with a notch, app menubar icons just get lost under the notch if you have too many of them. You have to quit apps or move notifications to the Control Center. Doesn't this bug some Apple employee enough to Just Fix?! Scrollbar or popup with the full list would do.

Do you think SMS MFA is in any way secure? Think again. Our telecom infrastructure has more holes than swiss cheese. This is almost 2025, use an authenticator app or hardware key. I don’t love biometrics for this, but it’s better than SMS. Stop using SMS two factor auth!

We are very exited to share with you PEP 768 🐍, which proposes a safe external debugger interface to Python. We think this is a really exciting change that would allow debuggers and tools to safely attach to running Python processes without stopping or restarting them. 🔨🐛 peps.python.org/pep-0768/

This is huge news! The python-build-standalone project is officially moving under Astral's leadership. They were the basis of Rye, they are what uv fetches, and they are probably one of the best hidden secrets in the Python community that already drive tons of workflows. astral.sh/blog/python-...

Looking for good bass content to follow, players, feeds, instruments, instructors, etc. Bass guitar and upright. I’m gonna create a starter pack when I have “at least 7” - the minimum required to creat a pack.
