Not just Brazil. Good news tonight from - checks notes - Serbia. 👀 A massive resistance inspired pro democracy win in Serbia tonight.

News Eye@newseye.bsky.social

For two years, student-led protests have raged against Aleksandar Vučić and his corrupt government in Serbia. Today, in parliamentary elections, he was toppled. One of the most sustained protest movements in recent European history has succeeded. Resistance works.

Love's labor's lost: on Lee Chang-dong's magnificent POSSIBLE LOVE, which features the acting ensemble of the year — Jeon Do-yeon, Sul Kyung-gu, Cho Yeo-jeong and Zo In-sung. www.newyorker.com/magazine/202...

Peter Hujar's Day, 2025 - ★★★★½: https://letterboxd.com/pzingg/film/peter-hujars-day/

letterboxd.comA ★★★★½ review of Peter Hujar's Day (2025)Bliss for me to be able to watch two of British cinema's most intelligent actors living out a manuscript lost for 40 years: the transcript of a tape-recorded interview between two long-time New York friends in the art scene of the 1970s. Put this up with works by Elizabeth Hardwick, Joseph Mitchell, and others if you want to get a feeling for what my hometown once was. Back to the film, Rebecca Hall and Ben Wishaw are lovingly captured in low-light color in an imagined recreation of writer Linda Rosencranz's (Hall) Yorkville apartment, fitted out in modern furniture that includes

The Circle, 2000 - ★★★★★: https://letterboxd.com/pzingg/film/the-circle/

letterboxd.comA ★★★★★ review of The Circle (2000)The circle could be the location of the cinema where Pari goes to meet her friend who works selling tickets there, but it is also the structure of the film, which begins and ends with a search for a woman who has just given birth to a daughter when the sonogram indicated a much-desired son, and it is most likely a reference to the circles of hell in Dante's Inferno. To be an unmarried woman (or a married woman who has either not delivered the promised son, or who has run afoul of the No. 2--the husband's mistress) in the

Crime 101, 2026 - ★★★: https://letterboxd.com/pzingg/film/crime-101/

letterboxd.comA ★★★ review of Crime 101 (2026)Somewhat clever script that adds this film to the canon of high-concept LA crime dramas, with the usual double-crossing aspects. Weird that Nick Nolte's character just disappears halfway through after putting things in motion. Nice to see (meaning horrible to see) that the plot also involves ageist female tropes for Halle Berry's "53" year old character. Maybe it was the new OLED screens on United's 787, but the drone photography of LA freeways and office buildings was pretty unreal.

A combination of two factors led to my having forgotten, today, that Pattern Recognition mentions the Curta calculator having been designed in Buchenwald: (1) I haven’t fully reread PR since writing it, (2) septuagenarian CRS. (Can’t Remember Shit, alas.)

This Film often has the piss taken out of it for being a rather sedentary piece about 2 people just talking a lot — BUT — it has one of the most brilliantly prescient monologues imho. MY DINNER WITH ANDRE (1981) Have a listen.

This is *the* piece. Kate Manne, professor of philosophy at Cornell, speaks truth to the totality of failures at the university — and why students protesting the war in Gaza have faced far harsher consequences than any of the Cornell 7: www.thecut.com/article/what...

thecut.comWhat It Feels Like at Cornell Right NowAs a professor at the Ivy League school, Kate Manne has known many, many victims. There’s a palpable feeling on campus, she writes, that this is big.
