New blog post. I recently changed roles at work from a mostly Frontend Focused Engineer to a more Developer Experience Focused Engineer. It's been a really interesting shift away from my normal. I decided to write about it. #engineer #devex #javascript #typescript #go quincarter.com/posts/from-f...

When we got modals with dialog, it already seemed like something that was a pain in the butt was just so easy now... add invoker commands into the mix, and it's almost too easy 😅

please report these lowlifes making this crap. i uninstalled tiktok thankfully, but anyone out there that hasn’t, please report!

So I've been deepfaked, which feels pretty dystopian... The video is pretty good, but the voice is terrible. I've reported the videos and channel already, and, if you have a free moment, I'd appreciate if you reported the channel too, it's full of this crap. www.tiktok.com/@jeffcryptot...

Y'all go check out this post by @michaelwarren.dev! I have the privilege of being part of the lunch crew and I love chatting about frontend and CSS talks with these guys. Great group of guys and I love the conversations that keep challenging me to be better. michaelwarren.dev/blog/inherit...

michaelwarren.devInheritance, the cascade, and shadow dom encapsulationInheritance and cascading styles are different and it might be that not a lot of people know. Also shadow dom only encapsulates one of them. Can you guess which one?

Y'all should totally invest in Michael. This guy is a design genius. I love that I get to pick his brain at work and learn about challenging design standards daily. I know that guy.

The spec of truth! The full course talks more about the importance of living spec files, especially in the age of AI, and how writing down your decisions is crazy hard but worth it!

Recently took an old app I built with angular and ionic and converted it to an entirely Lit app. The app had a login dependency and always deterred people from adopting. Post outlining my story of how this app grew. Mistakes I made. Lessons learned. quincarter.com/posts/introd... Go Give it a shot!

New blog post on building full-scale apps with Lit. I gave this talk this past week at RVA.js - second time this year, and as a Web Components fan, I'm still surprised more people aren't using them. Some folks last week hadn't even heard of Lit Element. Have you? quincarter.com/posts/buildi...

Remember Multiplicity with Michael Keaton? That's gotta be where AI is headed, right? The first iteration was built on stolen work of people so it was pretty good but now the people stopped creating so it'll just copy itself. We remember how the cloned copy of a copy went in the movie, right?

Web development fucked. Design fucked. Freelancing fucked. Content creation fucked. Education fucked Blogging fucked. Dev rel fucked. Hard to find a purpose in this brave new world.

You know. I hope this triggers the AI-pilled. This is so true about a lot of AI that supposedly will "change the game." You end up coddling the AI and holding its hand to the point that you're taking longer to do a task you could have done yourself. "Don't get left behind" pfft. Whatever.

I've got a preview of the curriculum and it's great! I can't wait to see how this goes! Congratulations @michaelwarren.dev

It’s been hard to keep this a secret for so long, but it’s time to let the cat out of the bag! Still plenty of work to do, but I’m stoked for the opportunity to work with @kevinpowell.co (one of the greats!) to bring this to life! More to come!

This spoke volumes to me. "Coding has never been the bottleneck". BRUH. PREACH

new blog post time! this one is a story of an idea I had at work to build something and all the reasons it was still impossible even with AI. michaelwarren.dev/blog/where-i...

Currently building an sdk for something I'm cooking up on the side. May mix in web components into this. But spoiler alert - it's Android XR based. Should work on the audio and display glasses.

This is so true. I've said this like 12 times this week at work. Humans expect certain information and certain tasks to be repeatable. Y'all need to lace determinism into your ai skills. It'll not only use less tokens but it'll make your AI more predictable. Script as much as possible!

Michael Warren@michaelwarren.dev

i really need a sign that says “humans crave determinism” i can point at.

dang now tanstack is compromised (shai hulud) socket.dev/blog/tanstac... i think we’re going to HAVE to slop fork our dependency trees now to avoid these supply chain attacks. i don’t want to but how else can we do it? zero dependency life is looking pretty attractive right now

Perfect example. I built a document viewer web component. It can render PDFs faster than PDF.js. this is due to workers, web assembly, and sound component architecture that keeps everything in the main thread running smoothly and workerized the heavy stuff. github.com/quincarter/d...

github.comGitHub - quincarter/document-viewer-web-component: Standalone Web component for rendering documents of any file typeStandalone Web component for rendering documents of any file type - quincarter/document-viewer-web-component

Web Workers have been widely available as a browser standard since 2012. The main thread is totally overworked. If you offload heavy tasks for a worker, you give the space back to the main thread to render at 60 FPS. No thread locking. You have a dumb component? Offload heavy array iteration.

Shoot. The canvas API is available in a worker scope now. If your component is using a canvas and you're not offloading, you are missing an opportunity to give frames and time back to the user. Canvas rendering is HEAVY on the already bogged down main thread.

i’m tired, boss. tired of explaining the value of ui component libraries to people that have barely ever seen a ui and only want to connect business value to dollars or “apps in production”

Shoutout to Regal Cinemas! Trip to the movies to see Mario Galaxy. Tix for 2 adults, 2 kids: $70. Snacks: $45. My wife and I shared a drink, kids shared a drink, and we got one of their “combo deals”. So if anyone at Regal is confused as to why movie theaters are dying…that’s why.
