It's the time of year where decisions on investment for 2027 are being formulated so it would make a lot of sense to pull all AI spend and invest that money on stuff that actually will produce growth for your organization. There's no point in waiting for the pop. Get ahead of it instead.

This feels like an AI glazing itself, right? Like, no one actually writes like this... And it begs the question, how does this get published in the NTY (or anywhere for that matter).

cool, cool

Also, with AI writing being based on insane amounts of training data on actual writing that AI has, why is it that it clearly has its own voice that feels easy to spot?

And I guess credit to the AI for being good enough to find the three points you could probably say about 90% of 10-year-old girls and be spot on? 😅

I still absolutely love watching Kevin's videos about specialized details that almost no one ever cared about before (and even fewer care about now) and I will continue to do so. It's more important than ever.

I wish I'd realized when recording this that it would come out on the 10-year anniversary of my channel, but even if I didn't mention it, I guess it's still pretty fitting 😅 (plus it was posted to my second channel anyway, lol)

Congratulations on your 10-year channel anniversary, @kevinpowell.co! Keep teaching us the cool things CSS can do. AI can write better code than I ever could, but it will never be the Meister from which I want to learn the craft.

It took me a long time to understand that it's not because you show people that something can be done better in an easy way that they will actually care about doing it. If someone doesn't care about details, it doesn't matter that it's easier now, a tool isn't gonna change their personality.

Where do people think AI gets the ideas of how to do better CSS? A combination of devs knowing that something exists + the training data. The former matters a lot with ever-emerging new standards. Riding the AI wave too hard eventually results in lack of purpose and not knowing what to prompt for.

I looked into the company, and it's real. This is literally the service they sell. I'm on the fence between telling them how much of an invasion of privacy this is, or just marking spam. They won't listen anyway. The more I think of it, the more I feel like calling out the business in a video....

I love how people now apparently think it's totally cool to make an AI clone of you without your consent. This is the subject line of an email I got, and they put up an unlisted YouTube video with me, cloned, to me show how great it is.

I mean, what the company does is kinda strange, but if someone wants to pay them for that, that's their prerogative. But to clone without consent as a marketing tool, even if they only send the video to me, feels dirty...

...and feels like it should break some privacy laws? Maybe YouTube's T&S too, since they used YouTube videos to train it?? I have no idea on that front, but the "we cloned you without your consent, but respect your privacy" are two things that have no overlap.

Oh, but in that preview video they didn't use my voice because they totally respect my privacy and would never do that without my consent. But "click this button to apply your voice within 15 seconds!" ... so they did clone it without consent and are just keeping it behind the scenes for now 🫠

I've been deepfaked, and this bothers me more because at least the deepfake person knows they're a scammer. These people seem to think cloning people without their consent is a good marketing tool for their service, which, as far as I can tell, is to let me deepfake myself to trick my audience...

The pitch is absolutely wild. "Your audience could talk to you instead of just watch you and how much more money they'd pay!" By gods yes, it's time to turn into the ultimate grifter and try convince people they're talking to me, while I sit in the bahamas sipping on cocktails!

If you're really curious about what's going on with PHP, this is an excellent explanation. (And I really hope you're not responsible for updating PHP yourself, sounds like this sucks.)

Kevin Powell@kevinpowell.co

I haven't looked at too many comments on here yet, but I've noticed enough amount of "just fix it with AI" that... I donno what the feeling is, but it's not good. I do think a compilation video of people trying to one-shot prompting migrating from PHP 5 would be great though. youtu.be/cBD1AgkM1VQ

Again, those security releases PHP just shipped are just … 🤯 Those two bugs let anyone run their own code on your server with a single crafted request: no login needed, and it happens before your CMS or framework even starts. And proof-of-concept exploits are already circulating … 🧵

This account posts on almost all of my new videos, and always to says how there is either a better way to do something, or how they do it a different way that they think is better. It always has emojis like this. I never thought of it until this one, but now I'm thinking it might be a troll bot?

I would say the account name looks like a bot, but I'm seeing more and more accounts with random numbers letters at the end for whatever reason.

Every long-lived website ends up with cobwebs. 🕸️ Things that used to do something, but no longer do. Like httpequiv for IE8-10, your fb:pages id or the Windows 8 tile tags. None of them do anything anymore. But which ones can you safely get rid of? The next version of Polypane will tell you!

Really not likely, but if anyone here follows me has attended #FFConf as a student in the past, I'd love to include a quote from you (I've got a couple of posts, but they're pre-pandemic so I'd love something a bit more recent). Can be a social post or email to events@leftlogic.com
