Inspired by a question from my son, I had Claude put together something I've always wondered - how long does it take for a supercomputer to make it to your home?

as above, compose below. probably the world's first occult category theory music video verified by lean.

working on some occult category theory music, but first verifying the math in the lyrics using lean as one does

users here regularly disappoint me in not finding the fine line between feeling vindicated privately by someone's downfall and actively bullying or publicly mobbing. we should try to love more, and when we cant find it in ourselves we should try harder to avoid hatred.

Celebrating oceanographer Marie Tharp’s induction into the 2026 Women's Hall of Fame! 🥳🎉 Born in 1920, at a time when there were few options for women in science, Tharp revolutionized our understanding of the ocean floor. Learn more about this year’s inductees: go.whoi.edu/womens-hall-of-fame

USA and Houthis both trying their best to assert illegal authority over maritime traffic. at least the USA maintains global de facto control over illegal foreign leader kidnappings, civilian assassinations, and foreign resource extraction.

2/ Other Key Takeaways: The Houthis' recent military activity in the Red Sea coastal plain indicates that the group is trying to reinforce its de facto control over the Red Sea coast in tandem with its efforts to assert illegal authority over maritime traffic.

We can equally laud and condemn Fritz Haber simultaneously without needing to pick one. No human being is reducible to a single judgement call encompassing every aspect of their life.

It's so cool we have this depiction from just after 1066, and then this photograph 920 years later in 1986.

Halley’s Comet is sighted - a bad omen

calling iran a gas station masquerading as a country is like calling the US an orwelian war machine disguised as a freedom-loving democracy. you arent wrong, but also not entirely accurate. in both cases, theres a rich history of culture and artisans being represented by a sociopathic monstrosity.

Robin Brooks@robin-j-brooks.bsky.social

Iran's currency is really tumbling. The dominant narrative on Iran is wrong. The US has time on its side. Iran doesn't. In the end - like Russia - Iran is a gas station masquerading as a country. On August 26, 1966, readers of the NYT woke up to the first photo of the Earth from the Moon on the front page. Here's a thread about how the Lunar Orbiter team retrieved it from film on a spacecraft orbiting the Moon, showing the reconstruction process back on Earth. 🧵(1/12) 🗃️🔭 #photography

imo, there are two kinds of people in this world: those that put energy into wishing away or ignoring the negative externalities of capitalism and those who put energy into figuring out how we transition to a post-scarce era.

Insane statistic: In 2025, China increased its electricity generation by almost 500 terawatt-hours (TWh). That's the equivalent of the entirety of Germany's grid added to China's electricity system in just one year.

See the alternating warm and cold patches in the Northern mid-latitudes? That's the imprint of a quasi-stationary Rossby wave (i.e. oscillations in the jet stream). It's rare to see it so clearly in a monthly-average temperature map.

alarming when you realize the data is a 30 year average.

Jupiter spins so fast that gravity at its poles is 16.7% higher than at the equator. In fact, the equatorial velocity of 12.6 km/s is faster than Earth's escape velocity.

The year where the most people were added to the global population was 1990. +93.37 million It's unlikely to ever happen again.

my father dated a woman who denied dinosaurs ever existed. she also fiercely defended other glimmers of knowledge like "females do not fart"

A shocking new poll result: Many Americans somehow don't have a favorite dinosaur. And only 6% give the correct answer (triceratops). Check out YouGov's new polling on Americans and dinosaurs: yougovamerica.substack.com/p/whats-your...

people with robot girl pfps posting 'datacenters are destroying the planet' from their cyberpunk aesthetic accounts. bestie my culture is not your costume

Too many people frame the world as good vs bad, us/them and it falls apart in reality. In the scope of humanity the good are the people and the bad are any institution that becomes distant from the people it builds on. Nationalism, feudalism, federalism, corporatocracy, hegemony are the 'bad guys'.

Perfect example of humans desiring something but underestimating the dependencies. Look at how small that rootball is. I'm no palm expert but the stresses of that windy transplant with high albedo surroundings with that tiny fraction of roots equates to very low odds of survival.

Putin is attacking the EU in all kinds of new ways because of this: more than 3 years after the invasion, many of the EU's most powerful countries - primarily Germany and Italy - chase Russian money instead of confronting Putin. The EU's "Wall of Shame..." robinjbrooks.substack.com/p/the-eu-wal...

Twitter pays people based on engagement (views, retweets, comments, etc). It appears that many MAGA accounts are based abroad and they use AI technology to generate low-effort rage bait. My guess is that this will get worse as AI tech improves. For instance, fake videos of minorities doing crime.

Powerful computational tools are cool. But not when the vast majority of funding is lined up for research towards WMDs. Thumbnail is cringe, but I'm glad 404 has the Alamos budget on display in this article.

Some of the most remarkable lost artefacts from the ancient world were the titanic wrecks of the Nemi ships, built for a Roman emperor. In their first-century heyday they held gardens, palaces and baths in a floating wonderland. But barely a decade after their recovery, they were lost forever.
