The citizen who yelled "Shove that ballroom up your fat ass" is, in this hard time, a patriot. Honestly, what is left to say about this level of misrule? What careful critique hasn't been already offered? What reasoned response to this full-on run at fascism and kleptocracy remained unspoken?

It is in a lot of ways just an abdication of responsibility, of taking a role in forming the political environment. It's the fundamental problem of shallow popularism; you assume you're just a powerless actor reacting to the "preferences" of the "median voter", which is a loser's way of thinking.

Excellent dissection of focus group politics.

American conservatives are constantly bemoaning the decline of aesthetic standards and calling for a return to tailored suits and classical Roman architecture, but are now forced to defend the Cheesecake Factory. A constant tension between the Brooks Brothers patrician and the Kid Rock populist.

Unfortunately, they are succeeding beyond their wildest dreams. A lot of this is simply the manifestation of the deeply ugly conservative id.

The point of spectacles like this is not to deter terrorists; it is to debase the population. They want us cruel and vulgar, or at the very least, numb to cruelty and vulgarity.

it’s kinda amazing to sit in a downtown corner coffee shop and watch all the women walk by. office workers in stylish combos, hotties jogging in athletic wear, beautiful frumpy retirees in casual jeans. even the women a complete mess and clearly struggling are still gorgeous to behold

I’m ok. Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement. For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation. I will not be silenced.

"If more books were published by men with explicitly masculine themes, would there actually be a wider male readership?" This is very much in the Platnerian mode that presumes all men are only attracted to content by, for, and possibly about Tim "The Tool Man" Taylor. jacobin.com/2026/10/lone...

I wish we could have an honest conversation about this shit. Are there males out there starving for male role models? Absolutely, but even though there is no shortage of male role models in all of fiction, let alone literature, a lot of males today are looking for entitlement, not role models.

There's a shit-ton of actual anti-Semitism in the world today, but Netanyahu's fraudulent misuse of the term devalues it dangerously. Hamas is anti-Semitic and murderous. Netanyahu is a cynical, murderous shitheel. Mamdani is an American politician with a perverse impulse to tell blunt truths.

NY Times Pitchbot@nytpitchbot.bsky.social

Whether it’s Benjamin Netanyahu empowering Hamas, presiding over a massive intelligence failure that let them kill 1,200 Israelis on October 7th, and then killing 74,000 Palestinians in response or Zohran Mamdani pointing out that he did this, both men have fueled their bitter feud.

How are you feeling these days? God’s just watching in Heaven and wondering why you don’t rise up and put them all in prison and stuff? Think about how good that would feel.

This is the real closing of the American mind. We will pay through the nose for it.

Claire Zagorski, PhD, MSc, EMT-P@clairezagorski.bsky.social

I hate it so much. This can happen to you too. A year ago, almost everyone doubted this would happen. I had faculty at other schools telling me I was hysterical. (Irony!) Watch for the installation of right wing figureheads without an academic background. Watch for assaults on faculty governance.

Between 29 and 35 percent of the American citizenry is too fucking ignorant to operate a republic. As Churchill noted, democracy is the worst form of government there is -- until you consider every alternative. It's hard, quotidian labor to self-govern, so the worst of us are exploring alternatives.

911? I’d like to report a murder.

It really is something for this exemplar of white mediocrity, a weak intellect gifted his sinecure specifically to massage the tender egos of white conservatives, whingeing about authors who are his clear betters, as if any respect or honor they earn could only be the result of an undeserved gift.

So that's the thing. I grew up Mormon. And there are ~progressive poly folks~ who insist "Oh but haha we're not doing it BAD like those crazy Mormons did, we're GOOD people!" and then merrily describe doing shit that "oppressed Mormon sister wives in the 1860s" 100% would not have put up with.

It seems like this is a good time to tell you all why LLMs are never, and can never be, conscious.

Laura Jedeed@laurajedeed.bsky.social

Are AI companies being extremely irresponsible with incomplete and badly defined parameters for their LLMs? Yes! Are they unwittingly creating Skynet? No. Grow up. Come on

The Manning moment is small, in the scheme of all the things happening in this god forsaken time. But let's be clear -- this is not a product of this time. The AI aspect, yes. But men in sports, especially football, being shitty about and to women? Male journalists joining in? Old shit.

How a particular candidate can motivate their base while also reaching out to other voters is specific to the candidate and the race. But it's silly to act like the only task the candidate has is to reach out to low-info swing voters and the base should motivate themselves or be blamed for the loss.

We need at some point to talk about American Evangelicalism as a heretical movement. We should not indulge the delusion of a bunch or nuts who cherry-pick the Bible to rationalize otherwise indefensible 21st century bigotries that they are representatives of a global faith.

Trump told 9/11 families that he was rescued from the rubble of the World Trade Center -- an obvious and shocking lie. Here's how the New York Times reports it. This is like reporting George Wallace's "segregation forever" speech as "Governor speaks at inauguration. Some remarks controversial."
