I wrote a short blog post about the conference we held on 16 September to celebrate UCL’s bicentennary and its wide-ranging Americas expertise.

🌐NEW BLOG 🔗https://tinyurl.com/37apt7z2 📌The idea for the conference stemmed from a simple realisation: while UCL boasts an extraordinarily rich array of expertise on the Americas across diverse fields and disciplines, its scholars remain widely dispersed.

Replying to @naomikritzer.bsky.social

It's a really good collection; my favorite story in it is still "Unauthorized Bread," but the title story, "Radicalized," is also EXTREMELY PRESCIENT (it's about terrorism against health care executives and what might motivate it / result from it.)

A version of whatJames Scott once called “anarchist calisthenics”… Keep yourself fit with the seemingly small and incremental to ensure you are “fit” when the bigger lift comes.

Great point from the excellent Cory Doctorow. Politicians need to deliver on the little, sometimes apparently trivial things that improve daily life because otherwise why should anyone trust them to deliver on the really big stuff.

This is solid and a good reminder to not get suckered in to and reproduce tech AI doomerism (which is part of the sales pitch)

Paris Marx@parismarx.com

Bernie Sanders is leading the charge against data centers, but his AI policy leaves a lot to be desired. As Sanders follows the hype, AOC is taking a different tack by targeted the real harms of generative AI. We need policy that takes on the reality of AI, not the industry’s exaggerations.

You think he’d learn from his predecessors’ failed efforts in the 1960s and 1970s in the Bahamas, the Minerva Reefs, Vanuatu and elsewhere… but then again, he thinks History is nothing more than a “ledger”

Gil Durán@gilduran.com

Balaji Srinivasan's parents left India to seek opportunity in the USA. They became doctors in New York. Their son became a tech zillionaire. Now he's *renounced* his US citizenship to seek refuge and safety in countries with less freedom...because "freedom." Peter Thiel is one helluva drug.

Still rooting for Spain.

this is overall a good article I think but I will generally say that the only thing I find more consistently tedious and pointless than idle political moralizing are the critiques thereof jacobin.com/2026/07/worl...
