Presumably Farage will just have to keep contesting by-election after by-election to stave off the moment of reckoning. At some point Binface will reap the reward of voter fatigue and defeat him.

For a noir centred on a double-crossed getaway driver who after five years in jail is out to settle scores and get the money he missed out on, Cry Danger has a breezy, easy-going tone. It’s almost a hangout movie with jaunty Dick Powell, his new veteran buddy and an unabashed b-girl pickpocket.

Some of this is down to Dick Powell’s characteristic floating above proceedings rather than letting them trouble him overly, and some because the screenplay is so sharp and witty it would only take the shine off if anything really mattered.

There are two from Joseph Moncure March: The Set-up (1949) and The Wild Party (1975).

Are there any other poems that have been made into films? Could Nolan have a crack at "This is just to say"?

Okay, place your bets on what you think Zendaya gets up to in the new Spider-Man movie, according to Peter Bradshaw. I’m going with custard.

Assuming the BBC show the Goodies episode Kung Fu Kapers (Ecky Thump) in tribute to Bill Oddie, there’ll have to be a health warning, given that one individual died laughing at it.

Turn the Key Softly is a tender, compassionate, atmospheric film about the traps London sets for three women released from prison, which makes the odd decision to pivot in its last quarter to a (very good) noir centred on a man engaged in a burglary and rooftop chase.

On a trailer this evening for a new Ridley Scott film, there was the credit: “From the director of Gladiator, The Martian and Black Hawk Down”. Really? Those are your picks?

Where I first saw Jaws, Star Wars and The Spy Who Loved Me.

Bogart didn’t want to do Conflict, straight after Casablanca, and it’s understandable why— after years as a heavy, he’d clawed his way to a leading man position, and the role of a wife murderer must’ve felt like a step back.

In fact, it’s a precursor of the nastier, neurotic Bogart of In a Lonely Place and The Caine Mutiny, and suits him much better than fare like Sabrina. It’s also extremely Germanic, to the point where I was looking into whether Fritz Lang had a hand in it (no, but Robert Siodmak did).

#NowPlaying A fantastic collection of the recordings Grant Green made with Sonny Clark, incredibly not released by Blue Note for almost two decades, and then only in Japan on three individual albums.

#NowPlaying I haven’t listened to Elliott Smith for too long—it’s felt upsetting—but I took on Figure 8 again, and man, what an astounding record.

“Verify your age” I listen to albums beginning to end, and Track 1 Side 2 is usually the standout.
