i want to make it clear to any loyal dems who can read this: if you primarily value being a member of the Good Team trans rights is not optional. you know how you see your boomer parents? that's already you. you'll be sweating as you tell your kids and grandkids it was A Different Time Back Then

State that brings us classic images like this one, Welcome to The War on Cars, I guess?

Larry Kudlow, interviewing Trump, claims that Californians "hate cars"

When we finally got a smaller fiber ISP in town Spectrum not only started lowering prices to compete but also finally upgraded our local cable infrastructure to support residential gigabit plans.

Ars Technica@arstechnica.com

Comcast has historically capitalized on a lack of competition for high-speed wired broadband, but a new class of fixed wireless providers and fiber providers has made things more difficult for the company: arstechnica.visitlink.me/ysdOq6

They also now refer to the product as "high speed internet powered by fiber and delivered by coaxial cable" to get in on the fiber hype, but at least they did make actual upgrades.

There are nuances to everything, but this list of technologies do not have nearly the same physical resource or cultural and political externalities as generative AI. You will be hard pressed to use the major AI tools available without relying on stolen art and information and funding more of it.

dame@dame.is

I wish more people understood that using AI and being generally in favor of a technology does not equate to supporting any and all usage/implementation of that technology. We all already understand this about computers, the internet, software, cameras, GPS, pharma, etc.

Putting aside the attempts to force normalization of something a lot of people don't like (an effort many people in tech aid without realizing they are participating in), using this stuff is actively doing harm to people in a way you can't mitigate/seperate effectively.

More Red Line passengers can soon expect faster travel times. The MBTA will increase speeds from North Quincy to JFK to 50 miles an hour, MBTA General Manager and Interim Transportation Secretary Phil Eng said Thursday, as he also touted higher top speeds on the Orange Line.

Business Insider confirms it: Amazon has warehouses of GPUs that can’t be installed, and is buying them so far in advance that a supply chain team said they “didn’t have a clear forecasted path” to installing them. www.businessinsider.com/amazon-220-b...

Ed Zitron@edzitron.com

Free newsletter: I estimate that ~50% of AI chip sales - $200bn to $300bn+ - are sitting in warehouses, with NVIDIA selling hundreds of billions of GPUs years in advance. Data centers take way longer to build than hyperscalers are leading us to believe. www.wheresyoured.at/wherere-all-the-ai-chips/

why would this be useful

NVIDIA CEO JENSEN HUANG SAYS HE BELIEVES MOST PEOPLE IN GERMANY WILL MOSTLY WORK INSIDE A DIGITAL TWIN OF THEIR COMPANY, BUILDING DIGITAL CARS WITH DIGITAL BRAINS, WITH AI ROBOTS BUILDING ROBOTIC CARS INSIDE ROBOTIC FACTORIES

Fun fact about roads: there are far more overhead obstructions than most people realize, many of them not clearly visible from inside a vehicle.

Emily Darling@radicaldreamer.bsky.social

I think the funniest thing about the flying tesla is the assumption that people wouldn't use the product to try to skip traffic and destroy the cars in front of them with the jets while taking off. that's literally all people would use it for!

Those height clearance signs you see for trucks? You don't see them on every street because they're only used when obstructions are below a threshold (usually 14'6") that affects non-permitted vehicles. Street/traffic lights, overhead cables, taller bridges, banners, highway signs, list goes on.

I can actually partially answer why so dark. One of my clients that had a bad habit of taking the under-paid video jobs asked me to work as a gaffer on a gig in western Maine. Due to previous experiences, I asked them if it was a political gig and they admitted it was for Carlson at his home studio.

darth™️@darthbluesky.bsky.social

i mean the horse thing aside he looks and acts pretty bonkers here why is he so sweaty why is the room so dark

Joke answer: It's dark because I turned down the gig and refused to light him. Somewhat serious answer: These personalities pay terribly and are a nightmare to work for so they don't get skilled designers and craftspeople.

Charitably this covers scraping data to generate link previews, but also this is Meta we're talking about, there's gotta be an AI training play here too.

Jason Kint@kint.bsky.social

you can't be serious. This reads Meta/Facebook/Insta is looking to grant itself the rights to scrape websites across the open web - and train Meta's AI - if a company after Oct 30, 2026 uses Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp or other Meta services. So every biz. Read that again. Outrageous. 1/5

I've struggled for years in how to effectively do my job covering Starlink's impact on the inflight connectivity world against the backdrop of Musk's behavior. That keeps getting harder.

Rob Pegoraro@robpegoraro.com

Nobody at SpaceX with an ounce of self-awareness can be surprised to see the EU prioritizing tech sovereignty when Elon Musk can't resist treating Starlink as an instrument of his personal foreign policy.

A clear indicator that I'm tired: When I accidentally try to put the Fusilli box away on the Farfalle shelf.

Pre-generative AI I already divided software people into those who treated software as a craft and those who treated it as strictly numbers and engineering and the gap between those has only grown since.

Good point here, all those unlicensed and uninsured bike riders must be racking up millions of dollars in uninsured damages! Will they continue to take no responsibility for the carnage they cause?!

Greg Gary@greggary.bsky.social

This won’t be popular but I don’t care - as a driver I am tired of having people who may or may not have a DL pretend that the rules of the road do not apply to them, while carrying no insurance & taking no responsibility for whatever happens. Bike lanes are just a beginning.

When I first heard about AI being used for menus and advertisements, my concern was largely that it would be used to idealize the food and make it look better than it actually was. At no point did I imagine that restaurants would willingly put out horrific looking images of their food on purpose

Riding a vehicle the width of your body powered by your own muscles at a speed that would be hard pressed to kill anyone? Don't take up too much space!

Anfield77@anfield77.bsky.social

I move over or slow way down for cyclists, as I understand you have very little protection. Are you the type of cyclist that is respectful to car drivers and take up as little of the road as possible or the type that is offended we are on the same roadway you are traveling?

Driving a three ton metal box with four or more empty seats, air conditioning, polluting the air with noise and fumes for everyone nearby, at speeds that will kill anyone outside if you slip up? Take all the space you want. We'll probably add more lanes so you don't have to wait too long!

This week at work the team out in multiple Uber Eats orders for crew meals and as the one team member who has a modern phone and uses Firefox but doesn't have an Uber account (meaning I'm ordering via website rather than app), the whole experience was unusable and someone else had to enter my order.

it’s 2026 how are we still doing the thing where website content popping into place during page load pushes buttons down the screen causing misclicks

Page loads taking tens of seconds, clicks constantly opening different items than what was tapped more than five seconds after the tap, placeholders remaining after data had loaded, etc.

Listening to the @nogodsnomayors.com Stuyvesant episode in interactive audio guide mode: Started while passing through Hudson Yards so The Vessel is mentioned right as I walk by it, pausing it for a few hours, resuming on my train north so Hartford is mentioned as we depart New Haven for Hartford.

Love to board a busy Amtrak train at Penn Station where hundreds of people have to use an escalator single-file, an assistant conductor is on the platform yelling at everyone that they need to hurry up or they'll miss the train, and no one can fit in cars to find seats.

Is it more efficient to allow people to wait on a platform to board and find seats at their own pace or to spend the first fifteen minutes of the trip standing in a crowd pack that can't move in either direction because no one can get to the few open seats? Who's to say.

Weirdly, yeah, I would call the guy who intentionally hit my bike with his massive pickup truck because he was angry at being told he couldn't park in a bike lane "violence"

Emmett Macfarlane 🇨🇦@emmettmacfarlane.com

Cycling activists would get a ton more public support if they avoided framing debates over things like bike lanes like this. Emphasize SAFETY, yes. Bike lanes make cities better. They can even make DRIVING better, by reducing congestion. Invoking 'violence' in ways most people won't buy isn't it.

Part of why I don't like the AI-or-bust economy is the constant flopsweat of people on the news who say this HAS to work. Quit making everyone so anxious. Goddamn. If this is the next Google then why are you acting like this? I don't remember being told to buy an iPhone at gunpoint.

Never forget when Shoup taught us that the value of parking spaces in the USA is likely more than the value of all the roads and all the cars that drive on them.

Joey Politano🏳️‍🌈@josephpolitano.bsky.social

Sort of insane fact about how broken US urban planning is—America now spends more building *just the lights for roads and highways* than on all subways & ground mass transit combined Spending on roadway *pavement* is 18x transit spending
