Gonna annotate my next Gene Wolfe book like this

Haven't been able to stop thinking about a prestige Book of the New Sun adaptation with an exclusively Steely Dan soundtrack. The analeptic alzabo is absolutely something a Dan protagonist would consume.

reading The Book of the New Sun. i bought it years ago but only read a dozen or so pages because i recognized it was good and wasn't in a head space to read a good book. i was right, it's good.

Prediction is hard. Especially about the future. That Yogi Berra gem proves that you don't have to be a sf writer to get irritated with people insisting that you must know what's going to happen tomorrow, but (as a sf writer), I can tell you that this is one of our main occupational hazards.

I listened to the audiobook of The Urth of the New Sun by Gene Wolfe because I've always got some Gene in the mix so he can leak into my writing. He's the kind of writer that alters your brain chemistry to the point where you're never the same as a reader/writer.

This is a deeply enjoyable podcast; you do have to read four, well five, well nine or maybe twelve Gene Wolfe novels, preferably several times; but if you've accidentally done that already like me, you will love this pod.

Gene Wolfe makes a stray detail essential 200 pages later. Neal Stephenson builds vast intellectual machines, with digressions as working parts. Adrian Tchaikovsky lets biology, society and technology reshape one another, then follows the consequences. I like ideas that unfold over time and pages.

Made it. Took a while to find Wolfes' stones. Used a cemetery map. No help. A Reddit post finally illuminated my path. Someone left an interesting rock on Gene's stone. Went to a local bookstore afterward. Sorry that I missed meeting him in life. RIP. (His stone says "Peace." Lovely allusion.)

Thought Gene Wolfe was giving a clue to the structure of deep future alphabets before I realised that he was making a joke and referring to the final word of the sentence itself

If you haven't read Shadow of the Torturer I would advise it. It almost does it a disservice that it can only be acquired as 'book 1 of Book of the New Sun' and as part of a single volume with Claw of the Concilliator, it is incredibly compelling on its own terms.

(Incidentally it's extremely subtle foreshadowing that in the Dramatis Personae index of Wrath Goddess Sing, one of Aphrodite's names is Ouraneia and god damn I have never seen a book foreshadow in an index before that's some Gene Wolfe shit)
