In Budapest last week, I saw this heart-wrenching memorial: bronze shoes along the Danube. They honor the men, women and children, mostly Jewish, forced to remove their shoes before being shot on the riverbank and then swept away by the river in the final months of WWII. A reminder. A warning.

We went for a drive through Spearfish Canyon, in South Dakota's Black Hills today. The leaves are changing so beautifully. Saw five mountain goats including two mama and baby pairs.

Some mornings the Black Hills seem reluctant to fully awaken. This morning was one of those mornings. The mist settled low across the meadow and turned the world unusually quiet. In the distance, Elkhorn Mountain rose through the haze, visible only enough to remind us of its presence.
