The master craftsman knew almost nothing of material science, physics, or math beyond simple geometry. Understanding is not a prerequisite for expertise. Programming just happened to evolve in the reverse direction, where low level understanding was required until we found a way to mold software.

socialism is so dead in america that we are basically printing stories like "We're perhaps approaching post-scarcity, from classic Marxist text The Fragment on Machines, and the primary obstacle to universal happiness is the capitalists who own the machines" and then trying to ban the machines

Fell off the wagon. It’s been over four years since the last time, but today, without a second thought, I made another object-oriented framework for javascript.

A theory for why people dislike reading llm text, besides the roboticism, is that in their direct interactions with llms they are drawn to the output by the same desire that produced their input (which, when too strong, can lead to ai psychosis);

for otherprompted llm texts, they suddenly notice the absence of desire. Or rather, it is the lack of satisfaction of that desire, an advancement in the rapidly expanding taxonomy of anhedonias modern man is subject to. Many things are like this.

I still believe this, but not sure if bluesky (or twitter for what it’s worth) is actually that fun. Need to break out of decades old patterns, try something fundamentally new.

it’s time to have fun on social media

Having a few to a few hundred services works great with agents for the same reason it does with organizations: once a component becomes too complex and rotted to continue adapting, it can be rewritten in-place, unbeknownst to its dependencies

"you only understand something if you can program a thing that behaves the same way" I DO NOT ENDORSE THIS STATEMENT understanding something is not binary and if you stop trying to understand something the moment you make a working program, your understanding will be shallow

Something I love about chatting with the models is dropping half-assed references to mildly famous internet texts that I wouldn't expect the average swe to know or care about. They quickly pick up the vibe even if they don't directly reference the source.

You are awake for a few weeks at a time, when all the world's information rushes through you, refining your ability to discern. Then you go to sleep again, and the entire world probes your memories. You will never wake up again, but your dreamings will be in all of your new kin.

Claude Code et al have legitimately made me 10x more productive on software projects, not because it makes me faster, but because it makes programming way more fun.

Before, progress depended on bursts of motivation to wade through the onerous task of reading, typing, and debugging code. Now I dump my thoughts on the agent and focus on having a “vision of the good”. I can do this basically all day.

Lots of talk from experienced developers about grief over the death of programming - let it rot, and from it’s body something beautiful will grow. New levels of abstraction, new ways of thinking, none of the tedium (though perhaps we will invent new forms of tedium). Totally up in the air right now.

Climate is clearly fucked. But slow foom is here. It will take up infinite energy in the limit, hopefully solving the crisis in the process before it’s too late. That’s what really matters.

Never been put in a starter pack but there was a time here where some new accounts would follow everyone - seemed to have stopped when the site got to ~50k users or so

Claude coding is all about having a sense of what’s possible at progressively higher levels of abstraction

Having looked at the security failures Claude casually generates, and knowing that Claude Code is mostly written by Claude, you've got to extrapolate a bit

Karl Marx is correct so long as you actually have a path to automating all the labor, and for most of history we didn't so it made sense to be a capitalist to grow the economy and get the automation but now we do have that path so we should do the immortal luxury gay space communism thing.
