How is this runway even allowed to exist? ( not the cause of the excursion -wind etc but big yikes to the rolly Polly runway)

Raphael Cockx@raphael.cockx.com

Did I just witness a runway excursion on a livestream from Birmingham Airport? Why yes, I did. #AvGeek

The ballroom scene in Ghostbusters was somewhat improvised. Bill Murray was sincere when he said “wait wait wait I’ve always wanted to do this” before trying to pull the table cloth out from under the place settings. “And the flowers are still standing!”

We all know the "Viggo broke his toe" story but what's another movie fact you're personally compelled to bring up every time without prompting? For me, it's the fact that Robin Tunney is wearing a wig in The Craft because of having just shaved her head to save her job filming Empire Records.

The “Swiss cheese” model of the impact of AI. To which our firm also subscribes — on whole the market will remain stable, but there are areas, air pockets, where AI may just completely vaporize a product or a job.

Guy Berger@econberger.bsky.social

Not my primary area of expertise, but I get asked enough about the labor market impact of AI that I thought I'd sketch out my views as of October 2026. I plan to revisit, modify and update this list periodically. macromostly.substack.com/p/thoughts-o...

This is an absolutely a hilarious deep cut and also absolutely 10000% correct. Amazing work, maybe a top ten post of the year.

Bluesky being Bluesky i'm gonna guess that a very large number of answers to this are going to involve canvassing for a PIRG

I can sympathize with the idea that your utility rates are A Big Hole That Takes Away Money, however, this is the kind of services your dollars pay for.

Good things cost money. This includes public infrastructure and especially public labor. As someone who has reviewed NPDES permit public comment for sewage discharges, frequently made demands *require* us collectively to pay more to meet not just public demands but current obligations.

Oh look, the pendulum swinging back from the bonkers design, screens and model naming bEcAUsE eLEcTrIC back to just their regular models, but with an elec drivetrain. Finally. All the VPs of Electrification trying to build their dumb little fiefdoms should be fired.

I mean the insane thing is this 1 million percent true for ICE cars too but we’ve all agreed not to talk about it or admit it.

Addendum: know where (and how high!) your air intake is. Air intake sys aren’t water tight, but if it’s just a big puddle, as long as the water level is below the port / grille openings, you’ll be ok. For prolonged water driving I’d never do anything deeper than oil pan (fear of debris also high!)

kenofseattle@kenofseattle.bsky.social

Don't ever drive through deep water. Engines compress air and fuel with pistons. Water does not compress, so the piston (and the connecting rod) will simply fail catastrophically, destroying the motor and leaving you stranded in several feet of water in a totaled car.

I assume her first topic is gender-affirming care.

so, Cosmic Crisp and its weird economics are pretty straightforwardly a reaction to Red Delicious being garbage, because WA growers needed to start growing something that wasn’t Red Delicious, and perpetually cash-strapped WSU got weird with it

This is seismic news for fisheries scientists. Northern cod is *the* iconic symbol of total fisheries collapse due to overfishing (and other factors) *and* the iconic symbol of a complete failure to recover for decades afterwards. This is like announcing the complete recovery of bison on land.

For the first time in over 30 years, Newfoundland and Labrador’s Northern cod stock has been deemed “healthy” by Ottawa. www.canadianaffairs.news/2026/09/05/i...

This type of fundamental “how our world works” is so critical and missing from today’s education! Street grids / street numbering and how addresses / zip codes / area codes work! So many people don’t know / understand the Interstate highway E/W-even, N/S-odd numbering schema! Many such cases!

Bill Savage@rogersparkman.bsky.social

Back in 1951, Chicago Public Schools had a very rah-rah civics textbook where the very first lesson was the Grid.

Hat is cool but the real star is the “GO SPORTS” sweatshirt. Was at Fenway this week and a dude was rocking a Dallas Cowboys jersey of all things. Truly a “go sports” mentality.

Way to go Maine! Great to see that the entire state other than …. Baxter state park? Has herd immunity.

Dr. Lucky Tran@luckytran.com

US child vaccination rates have plunged since before the pandemic, with kindergarten classrooms in more than 70% of counties now lacking herd immunity against measles.

Reminder that “all of Seattle” and “regular Seattlites” are not just the 60,000, mostly renters in Capitol Hill and the U district that moved here 5-10 years ago. The city has 800,000 residents, mostly home owners for decades, across an area 17 miles long and 9 miles wide. It’s a big, diverse city!

This is a fantastic chart and far far far too few people know where their power comes from. Check it out! (Also, it’s not this cut and dried since power is shared interstate, but a good visualization)

lol I just learned that the lake that the suburb of Seattle, Totem Lake, is named for is a lily-choked pond with minimal access surrounded by a mall, industrial parks and a highway interchange. Some great urban planning here. It’s the glade from Hoppers!

Inflation was the number issue for the 2024 presidential election and “the price of eggs!” Was literally the core slogan of the media.

The U.S. Justice Department and 17 states have reached settlement agreements with three major egg producers over allegations of that the companies illegally colluded in a multiyear scheme to raises prices.

If this country was truly “pro-life,” we would have Medicare for All, a Green New Deal, gun reform, universal child care, and a living wage. The right-wing agenda isn’t about “life.” It’s about control.

Why does it go down so deep? A ballroom would be at / above grade. Why doesn’t he put go down 50 ft?

I think the US economy can absorb far more than $5.00 gas. And/Or $5.00 for a very long time I know this because Washington and California have had $5.00 gas since 2011.

Not the point of the post but JFC what would it take to get some decent cross town travel options in this city. Plenty of N-S options and terrible / no x-town options.

I hadn't seen this map before, clearly spelling out the fact that the biggest swaths of Seattle set to be impacted by Washington's transit-oriented development bill (at least when it comes to BRT) are in West Seattle. (Areas in green are already meeting the requirements)
