It's quite clear to me that the Equality Act also needs to be amended to protect sex characteristics (rather than sex simpliciter), but that would involve hard questions the government wants to avoid.

The bill protects 'transgender identity' (or similar), but it doesn't *clearly* protect e.g. a woman born with variations in sex characteristics that is told she must live as a male when she enters puberty.

Lulu news is great, but it would be even better if we didn't have to alternate between cosmopolitan social democracy and exurban Hitlerism every election cycle.

I have not seen any reporting about this from Australian media. It is hard to overstate the extent to which this is a weird (and obsessive and hateful) British media thing.

Viscerally upset by the Beth Upton stuff. They won't be satisfied until they have hounded a woman – who the tribunal explicitly found had done nothing wrong – to her death. Btw the "incident" in Australia is that a patient worried she *might* be forced to be treated by her. She of course wasn't.

I think a lot about gay marriage: there were plenty of journalistic and political elites who criticized the pro-marriage argument right up into the tipping point but now just happily pretend they always supported it.

every now & then someone on the anti-trans side will get cold feet about how openly ugly it's all getting—they want to keep the image of a nice, sensible centrist but it's never enough for them to get off the train

I guess my point is that people seldom admit that they just got it wrong, and in a way I draw encouragement from the fact that so many people are trying to find different ways to avoid the conclusion that they've backed the wrong horse.

Back when I did Parkrun the same dog would best me every week and he was extremely cocky about it. He'd always hold his leash in his mouth as he overtook me in the final km.

No one seems to care, but these were the UK's submissions about hospital use in I v UK in *2002*. I get that the UKSC is big on reading ECtHR jurisprudence as narrowly as possible, but it really does strain credulity to think there is no Art 8 violation .

It has that same way of emulating understanding, and it's quite often accurate, but it doesn't feel quite right. It sometimes uses synonyms where a lawyer would use a precise legal term, for instance.

Returning to this point several days later, I wrote something about this the summer after FWS. The book it’s going to be in hasn’t been published yet, but I’ve been given the go ahead to put it on SSRN. I don’t know how useful anyone else will find it, but I found writing it psychologically helpful.

Trans rights is inherently a bodily autonomy issue. Just like abortion rights is. We can't have gender equity or reproductive freedom without trans rights. Full stop. You can yell at me and make up shit that you claim I've said if it makes you feel better. I don't care. I'm right. And you know it.
