My pal Danielle Koenig shared that her father Walter Koenig passed away last night at age 90. A performer whose kindness and warmth shone through the screen. He will be well remembered.

Very nice visualization of what conic section a parabola is.

Matt Henderson@matthen.com

a parabola is formed when circles radiating from a point meet lines moving at the same speed. this is equivalent to slicing a cone parallel to its slope

When visiting family in Scotland in March, we spotted this door sign on Aberdeen to Inverness train: "Stay Out: On-Board Whisky Distillery". 😁 Thanks #Scotrail for the unexpected entertainment! Apparently there are other variants across their network. #Scotland #TrainTravel @robjlow.bsky.social

Great thread!

1/15 In 1873, in his 'A Treatise on Electricity and Magnetism' (Section 113), Maxwell paused on a precise question: how many “equilibrium points” can the electric field⚛️ generated by a finite number of point charges have?🧪 #mathematics #physics #HistSci #HistMath #Mathsky

If, like me, you saw the algebraic and couldn't tell whether or not is was a joke, then, like me, you'll get a lot out of this thread. A great job by @gro-tsen.bsky.social !

Here 🧵⤵️ is an attempt at slightly expanding what the super simple description of the counterexample to the Jacobian conjecture means, originally written in reply to @tucek.bsky.social on the Musky place. I assume knowledge of what projective space and homogeneous coordinates are. •1/12

There are many worthier subejcts, but I'm going to nominate Cardell "Scum" Goodman (1649?-1699), whose deplorable career reads like half a dozen Blackadder episodes rolled into one.

Today’s poem is called ‘Requiem for Whoever’. It’s one of my more tender, thoughtful poems, as I attempt to gain a small share of the lucrative funeral poetry market.

Given a Riemannian manifold that is topologically a sphere, we can talk about "geodesics"—paths as close to straight as possible on the surface. On a true sphere, geodesics are great circles, but on topological spheres, the geodesics may roam around the sphere forever without closing up. 1/7

Here are a couple of gems from Archimedes's work, _On Spirals_. Begin with a spiral (known today as an "Archimedean spiral"). Using today's notation, the spiral is given by r = aθ in polar coordinates for some a. Consider one turn of the spiral from the origin O to where it hits the x-axis 1/3
