RoboFist 3.0 : You Can [Not] Be Relevant Again
Former "local culture anthropologist" crawling back to social media for the first time in three years, pitifully seeking validation from strangers by yapping into the abyss.
Last year was bad on my end, and this year isn't shaping up to be great for anyone.
I've seen people arguing in favor of replacing doomscrolling with positive hobbies, so I'm once again chronicling the games I beat this year in this thread.
Longer reviews for games will be in the alt text.
Sometimes people will criticize a new entry in a long running series for not being as memorable as the older entries, and I'm always like
Is that a fault of the new one? Or is it because you've played the old game a dozen times, discussed it, rewatched clips, etc, for 30 years?
This bit will be my hyperfixation for the next 24 hours.
Is this a flashback? A nightmare? That's definitely Mawkin armor, but the dude in the center can't be Raven Beak.
Does Samus bump into a whole new group of Chozo? That'd be insane.
I can't wait. I'm so happy, you guys.
Metroid Ravenous looks EXACTLY how I hoped it would. Samus is a walking petri dish of horrifying alien DNA and I'm so excited to see them finally explore the ramifications of that through gameplay.
This might be a contender for one of the most metal shots in any Nintendo game, but it's also a reminder that Samus just ain't human. There are terrifying things inside of her that have tasted freedom and are struggling for control. Things that can't be killed.
I love this. I'm so excited.
Yeah, the reactions on social medias are as expected.
I do not listen to kids complaining about the artistic direction in a Zelda game.
You couldn't appreciate the greatness of WW when it came out.
I don’t have any strong feelings about the Ocarina of Time remake. Except that Majora was always the more interesting game for me and SHIT if they remake THAT one?? I will fanboy out!! But otherwise… yeah OoTR looks fine. I’m happy / sorry for everyone
Shiny Pokemon are downright magical. Finding one IMMEDIATELY makes that species one of my new favorites for all time.
Never cared for Crobat until I caught a Shiny Zubat. Same with Flygon until I caught a Shiny Trapinch.
Nearly 30 YEARS of playing and I can now add ✨️Starmie✨️ to that list.
Fuck off. If anything is "millennial", it's those cool transparent colors our iMacs, Gameboys, and Tamagotchis came in.
No fucking millennial likes the house flipper grey.
Call it a millennial paint job when I can see through the exterior of a car because it's Glacier Purple like my GBA.
No fuck off we're not calling this "Millennial grey" this shit was dictated completely by boomer retiree house flippers we absolutely had NO say in this
bro they laid off the Doom 2016 developers. that's like if you laid off the studio that made arguably one of the best first-person shooters of all time, like Doom 2016

5. POKEMON: MOON
☆☆☆
Between the Island Trials, Poke Pelago, Lillie's whole arc, one of the most layered evil Teams in the series, and some TOP TIER 'mon designs, there's a great game in here somewhere.
If GF actually let you do anything without GRIPPING your hand the whole time.

4. DONKEY KONG BANANZA
☆☆☆☆
I've never been the biggest DK fan (the DKC games are NOT my cuppa tea), but I know a fun gameplay loop when I play one.
I like how "Odyssey" it felt, Pauline was a joy, and VoidCo was SUCH a step up from the Tiki Taks.
Definitely filled the 3D Mario hole in my heart.
I don't play Pokemon Champions and I'm not following the meta, but as a day one fanatic of this solar powered Jesus Lizard who has thought it's been overlooked for over a decade, it warms my heart to see it get sudden love/recognition.
Kingdom Hearts is my Sonic the Hedgehog.
Every time I think I've outgrown the dumb plot and cringey characters, something happens like Sora getting into Smash or KINGDOM HEARTS 4 CASUALLY REVEALED IN A RANDOM NINTENDO DIRECT and I'm suddenly 12 years old again and this is the most important thing.
I've been a fan of Jodie Whittaker since Attack the Block. An even bigger fan of Brie Larson since United States of Tara.
Seeing them land Doctor Who and Captain Marvel, only for the internet to HATE them for it, was a miserable rollercoaster.
TERRIFIED that will happen to Deborah Ann Woll.
X launched in Japan 34 years ago today, with wireframe 3D that pushed the Game Boy to its limits. We had no official dev kit so we reverse-engineered the hardware, even rigging up a camera pointed at a dismantled #GameBoy to see the screen comfortably! 🌙 #retrogaming
His design has definitely grown on me in the past few days.
That being said, I will forever be convinced that Toriyama designed him with the TONE of "Flames of Fate" in mind. We'll see if said design fits with the more old-school world and whimsy of "Beyond Dreams".
Not bad though.
It's a shame they needed to start from scratch.
Also a shame that the new subtitle is substantially worse than The Flames of Fate.
And that the new Hero design is...that.
But everything about the world and updated gameplay looks SPECTACULAR.
Scott Burns voiced Bowser in his famous voiced appearance in Super Mario Sunshine. For an interview, he voice acted the intro to the final boss battle from Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, providing a glimpse into a world where he had remained Bowser's voice.
Even after Eternal and TDA, 2016's overall vibe and design aesthetic is what my mind pictures as the quintessential Modern Doom.
Honestly might be a Top 10 game for me. If not, DEFINITELY Top 15.
After 15 YEARS of following this project, I finally made it downtown to see The Robocop Statue.
It's VERY silly. Some say problematic.
But "corporate-owned cop overcoming his soulless militarized programing to break free from the system and save his city" is actually PERFECT for modern Detroit.
"The Switch is so old," you all said. "I need better graphics," you demanded. "Wah wah," you cried. And now, you sit here before Slippy Toad, the slippiest he's ever been, slippier than a fucking banana peel under a kart wheel, all thanks to the raw power of the Nintendo Switch 2—and you reject him?
I don't get Star Fox fans.
Nintendo released FOUR games in between 64 and this remake, and y'all said with your wallets that you didn't like ANY of those directions.
So they're fleshing out the one game that worked REALLY well.
I'll be there day one. Y'all crazy.
Don't get me wrong, I understand the frustration. People want the story to progress or the gameplay to evolve.
Unfortunately, Star Fox has tried and failed to do those things before.
It looks like this new game will be adding a TON of new story along with adding new gameplay.
Let's earn a sequel.
Nintendo is obviously using this game to gauge interest in the franchise. You buy this game, you're investing in a sequel. Maybe even one this generation.
But if you're a vocal part of the internet that convinces the masses that this game is bad? You're telling Nintendo we don't want Star Fox.

Don't worry, you're not alone. I'm a lifelong Nintendo fan but damn Nintendo fans are the finickiest babies.
"This DK game should've starred Mario!"
"Every Metroid game needs to either be a remake of Super or Prime 1!"
"I buy every Pokemon game at full price day one because I hate modern Pokemon!"
Castlevania IV was a remake and we all really loved it until the internet collectively realized it was a remake, and now we have revisionist youtubers talking about how it's actually the worst Castlevania.
Fuck right off. We're getting a new Star Fox and it looks dope. I'm sorry you can't enjoy it.

3. Pokemon: Emerald Version
☆☆
Frustrating.
This is the gen that said, "These are battle sims now, the adventure is just set dressing." The technical side of battles is my least favorite part of this series and it's EGRIGIOUS here.
But that's why SO MANY adore this game so it just wasn't for me.
NOBODY did it like Norm.
His Tetris video especially is one of the most defining examples of video game history being shared with as much weight and gravitas any other historical event. Not even the MOVIE could tell that story without an unserious wink at the audience.
We owe this guy a lot.
After more than 15 incredible years of making Gaming Historian, I’m moving on to new creative adventures. Thank you for an unforgettable, life-changing journey. I will cherish it forever!

Sorry to get radical but I don’t think it’s my job or yours to embrace, accept, understand - and certainly not to use - the thing being sold to us as AI. I don’t like any part of it, so I won’t. I’m missing out? Good, that’s what I want. You’re worried about me missing out? That’s fuckin weird, man.
By the way, making my claim now:
This is Trevor.
This is Trevor Belmont's CURSE.
That's why he can use the Cross. And I bet that gold rope around his left arm is the Morning Star.
This is why someone as strong and faithful as Trevor allows his child to go fight demons in his stead.

The art style was pretty jarring at first, but it grew on me quickly. Some of these redesigns are absolute bangers. I'm like losing my mind over this interpretation of Medusa.
And Death just being this mountain of bones under a cloak? Incredible. Keep cooking.
Hell, I even dig the Medusa Heads and Fishmen in this style. They're still instantly recognizable despite fitting into this new bombastic tone.
I'm so excited to see more familiar faces.
I HAD A LAPSE OF FAITH AND I FEEL FOOLISH, BUT PRAISE BE! 🧛♂️🦇🍖🎸
It looks so clean. I love the speed and fluidity, giving me big Lost Crown vibes. And that art style?? Man...
Just reveal the protag's name to be Sonia and Castlevania has its own Dread-style comeback.
My three favorite video game franchises of all time are celebrating their 40th(!!!) anniversaries this year.
SE has already teased a big celebratory extravaganza for Dragon Quest. Nintendo MIGHT tease us with something Metroid-related, but probably nothing big.
And then there's Castlevania.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of some of my favorite franchises, including Ganbare Goemon...
...and Konami refuses to give us the only celebration that IP will even get.
Damn shame. Would've LOVED to see Seikushi Dynamites Arawaru localized.
THIS IS NOT A DRILL!
MYSTERIOUS MURASAME CASTLE NSO ICONS!
Nintendo of America wants YOU to play this game!
If you'll excuse me, I'm going to spend the rest of my night hypothesizing what this could mean for the future of the IP...
