Trump’s obsession with demonizing the Somali community is dangerous and reprehensible. Hate to break it to him: Somali Minnesotans are resilient. We will not let Trump intimidate us. Our neighbors have our back.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Trump tries to start a race war: "The once Great State of Minnesota is being taken over by Somali Immigrants ... The Somalians should not be allowed to get away with what they are doing. They view you as weak and stupid people. Fight back Minnesota, fight back!"

We've received at least one horribly racist voice mail re yesterday's federal raid of @repilhan.bsky.social's house -- thanks for the accidental encouragement, Tracy from Minnesota!!

Representative Ryan Clancy@ryanclancywi.bsky.social

I strongly condemn the raid carried out earlier today by the Department of Homeland Security on the DC home of Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar (@repilhan.bsky.social) This is a state-sponsored attack against a political enemy, led by a fascist, and it’s a stunt to distract from Trump’s failures.

MPD and MCSO would like you to stop yelling at them about Flock cameras, though. And to just get used to mass surveillance, already. That’s why they’re already shifting the conversation to different manufacturers, other surveillance tech. (See the screenshot!) (4/

I don’t believe law enforcement’s promises here, and neither should you. I will continue to follow community’s demands to bag and ban Flock cameras and similar technology. We can and must stop mass surveillance, and law enforcement abuse of it, in our communities. (5/

When I volunteer in shelters to assist folks who have lost their homes - and sometimes loved ones - to residential fires, I often wonder if something could have been done to prevent that loss. Here’s a case where we can and should do more: fire sprinklers. (1/3)

Adopting fire sprinklers in new construction, and incentivizing retrofits, is one way to preserve not just housing, but life. Today’s demo by the Milwaukee Fire Department underlines how critical it is to have public policy - like AB661 authored by Senator LaTonya Johnson. (2/3)

That bill, if passed, would help keep the public and firefighters safe. Thank you to the many folks who came out today to see this vivid demonstration of what good policy (or, instead, continuing to align policy to corporate interests) can look like. (3/3)

Congratulations to @1199seiu.org and the nearly 70,000 CDPAP care workers who filed for the largest union election in American history. These workers make it possible for New Yorkers to live safely and independently at home. I’m proud to stand with them in the fight for a union.

1199SEIU💫@1199seiu.org

History is in the making! Caregivers like Ingeri dedicate their lives to caring for others. Now, CDPAP caregivers across NYS are voting to join the 1199 family, gaining the support, advocacy, and collective power that make the union difference. @nytimes.com article: digital.1199seiu.org/nytcdpap

Scamming is now one of the largest and most lucrative crimes in the world, fueled by huge advances in AI and cryptocurrency. In a project by The Associated Press and FRONTLINE explain the world of scams, what can be done about them and how to protect yourself.

They call it a genocide, because it is a genocide. No quotation marks needed.

Some 150 Catholic priests and friars, a bishop and nuns from around the world have marched to the Vatican to call for an end to what they called the "genocide" in Gaza.

We can and must do more to combat wage theft. It's an enormous problem -- much bigger than shoplifting, for example. Thank for helping to change that, @mayor.nyc.gov! Read more here: newrepublic.com/post/175343/...

newrepublic.comThe Real Crime Isn’t Shoplifting—It’s Wage TheftWhy has the media gone all in on small time scofflaws when organized financial crime is robbing people straight from their paychecks?

DoorDash has ripped off more than 260,000 NYC delivery workers. We’re making them pay $131.5 million — the largest worker settlement in City history. This is New York, where hard work pays and greed will cost you.

Reminder: so long as one law enforcement officer in Milwaukee has access to Flock, it will be abused. Passwords will be shared, people will be stalked. And private, actionable info will be shared with ICE too. New City of Milwaukee guidelines are permission slips. bsky.app/profile/404m... (1/3)

NEW: Hackers ripped down a Flock camera above a roadway, made a near-complete copy of the data stored inside it, and shared the files with 404 Media and @wired.com, revealing in new detail how exactly Flock Safety’s cameras track the movements of both vehicles and people.

Guardrails are permissions. Whether it’s Flock cameras, AI scale data centers or anything else, toothless guidelines developed only with the industries and departments exploting are not a win. They’re a way of diffusing protest and entrenching these inherently…

Toothless guidelines and backroom deals allowing the continued use and abuse of Flock cameras are not sufficient. Milwaukee should bag its cameras, end its contract, and work with us to ban the use of this technology statewide. AB576 does just that.

The only way we can reverse this trend is by changing the status quo. We have to stop locking up more people, for more crimes, for more time. And we need to shut down torturous facilities like GBCI and Waupun as soon as we can -- our next Governor must take this problem more seriously.

Senator Chris Larson@senchrislarson.bsky.social

This August, Wisconsin set an all-time record for incarceration in state prisons at 23,854. To put that in perspective, that's enough to fill the entire Fiserv Forum, the new concert venue across the plaza from the arena, and then some.

“As the Wisconsin Legislative Socialist Caucus, we want to protect all workers and every community. We have consistently voted against tax breaks for data centers – and, just months later, were the first to call for a statewide moratorium on AI-scale data centers." (1/3)

Early voting for the August primary began *yesterday* and extends through Sunday, August 9th! Milwaukee's early voting locations: -Good Hope Library (7715 W Good Hope Rd) -Midtown Voting Center (4170 N 56th St) -Tippecanoe Library (3912 S Howell Ave) CONT. (1/2)

Institutions like this aren't reformable. We must abolish ICE, as soon as possible, and start treating our immigrant and refugee neighbors with the love and respect they deserve. Regardless of their legal statuses.

Tina Vasquez@tinavasquez.bsky.social

Text messages and videos obtained by the ACLU show that federal immigration agents who carried out last year’s raids in L.A. referred to Latinos with slurs such as “wet” (wetback) and “tonks,” reportedly derived from the sound a flashlight makes when hitting a migrant’s head.

This is the end result when you mix church and state, defund public schools, and refuse to push back on anti-trans hate. Fascists never stop at the most vulnerable, but they build their power attacking them. There is no compromising with them.

You can and should point out that police killing people daily is the "norm" in America. But that doesn't mean you *accept* the normalization of this violence and the way some people rush to smugly point these things out contributes to collective fatigue. Your horror has been stolen from you.

ICE's repeated lies aren't reformable. They're inherent to the agency's purpose: discouraging all immigration by terrorizing immigrants and people of color anywhere and everywhere they can. The violence is the point. ICE must be abolished.

Jennie Coughlin@jenniecoughlin.bsky.social

Three men who witnessed Lorenzo Salgado Araujo’s killing by federal immigration officers in Houston disputed the Department of Homeland Security’s account of the shooting and said the victim never attempted to run over a federal agent.

This is both a great consumer protection *and* a boon for affordability -- exactly the kind of policy that all Democrats can and should get behind. @mayor.nyc.gov continues to model democratic socialism as good, deeply principled governance.

BREAKING: Zohran Mamdani announces click-to-cancel rule for NYC. This rule is aimed at guaranteeing New Yorkers can cancel subscriptions as easily as they sign up — and stopping corporations from trapping customers. This will save New Yorkers up to $162.5 million per year.

This July 4th, it’s clear: we can only have community, or solidarity, without white nationalism, imperialism, and fascism. It is possible to love a country’s history, and its people, while opposing its government’s acts — and the capitalist ideology that limits our vision. (1/2)

Patriotism can look like a parade, but it also looks like tacos and organizing in the park with comrades. (Ty to the MKE Anti-war Committee!) I'm so grateful today for everyone working for a better, truly democratic future — whether you're feeling patriotic today, or not. (2/2)

The real headline from the birthright‑citizenship case isn’t the outcome. It’s that four Supreme Court justices signaled they believe a president can effectively rewrite the Constitution through executive order.
