My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today. Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.

Fancy a 168 page print film magazine, on really nice paper, jam-packed with stories, and shining the light on films that don't have superhero capes in them? Our latest issue is on sale here. We're 100% independent, and every sale helps. buff.ly/iAx9LJg

You can throw a football through the top storey window of an abandoned farmhouse

EA Sports has announced that it is working on a new open-world football game that the company calls "Project Gridiron," which seems to be separate from Madden and College Football. https://bit.ly/4z63a9U

The first genuinely honest ad for generative AI I've ever seen, from Microsoft / CoPilot A mediocre white guy sees his non-white colleague getting praised for good work, he asks AI to *literally copy it*, and then he gets all the praise instead: www.ispot.tv/ad/SoDi/micr...

The entire first season will set up the motivation for Daisy Ridley's voyage to a top secret location. Is it to the bottom of the sea? The top brass couldn't possibly say

Wrote this on the current state of the Alien films - and whether Ridley Scott might be about to tie up some loose ends.

Ridley Scott has said he’s taking back Alien. But could a new film pay off both Alien: Romulus and Alien: Covenant? A look at the options: filmstories.co.uk/news/alien-c...

It isn't a roadster.

Reuters@reuters.com

Tesla unveiled a redesigned Roadster equipped with thrusters that enable it to fly short distances, nearly nine years after it first showed a next-generation version of its electric sports car, and said it would start production in 2028. Chris Kirkham has more. reut.rs/4zCTFyN

A roadster is a small, nimble convertible that favours handling over straight line speed. This is a hypercar. Basically a Lamborghini redesigned by Dick Dastardly.

For some reason, this stupid choice of name annoys me even more than Elon Musk wasting untold millions on an undrivable vehicle that will either a) never be released in this state; or b) will eventually kill everyone who buys it and possibly some bystanders, too.

Hello, I've been writing about old disaster movies

From 1970 onwards, the disaster movie enjoyed a brief yet loud moment of box office glory. We look back at its rise, fall and later return. filmstories.co.uk/news/airport...

A definite sign of ageing is that you cannot impress me with "over 20 years" anymore. Am I expected to think this sauce is ancient, because it's as old as Nelly Furtado's Maneater?

Animals is a really weird film, and its making - Affleck taking the script on, seemingly oblivious to its plot's, er, similarities to other films - is even weirder.

Recently landing on Netflix, Ben Affleck thriller Animals has eerie similarities to a film by Akira Kurosawa and its 2025 Spike Lee remake. filmstories.co.uk/news/animals...

Hm. Conversations I’ve had with insiders at Netflix are all about how any menu system can’t remotely compete with linear TV - so many disadvantages - and that plenty of programmes and whole genres can only survive on a platform that doesn’t rely on an algorithmic / front page priority system.

Here's an absolutely incredible piece of dialogue from the 1980 Alien knock-off, Contamination: Tony: “You’re the first woman I went after that I never got past first base with.” Stella: “I’m sorry.”
