Musician, reader, big sister, Old Labour. I live just below the windswept moral highground. It's densely populated here and, despite its messy ambiguities, it's warmer and more friendly.

Put simply: having piano lessons and not practising in between them is like belonging to a reading group and not reading the book, yet still going along to the sessions. 🙍‍♀️

We once lived next to Jeffrey Archer. He'd swear furiously at his sons while playing cricket in the area btn our houses (his lawn being studded with Elizabeth Frink sculptures). He failed to get Mum to move her beaten-up Mini for his annual garden party - it was covered 'Jobs Not Bombs' stickers.

"Don’t be silly. I can hear you. I just can’t hear exactly what word you’re saying," said my 90yo mum just now. #hearingaids #mum

I feel like I'm living in a massive, seething, violent Hieronymus Bosch painting, and somewhere far away Andy Burnham is singing 'Always Look On The Bright Side of Life' and strumming 4 chords on his guitar.

An even more interesting question for @cam.ac.uk following #c4news expose of Reform, and James Orr's special role in it.

Hardeep Matharu@hardeepmatharu.bsky.social

It remains striking that Cambridge University – which has rightly found itself subject to immense scrutiny in recent days over its academic appointments process – did not answer any of Byline Times' questions re Cambridge Professor James Orr, Reform's Head of Policy, and his activities there. Why?

Here's a neat illustration of 'will' vs 'would' from @theguardian.com .

The Scales ⚖️@shakethescales.bsky.social

Professional wordsmiths at the BBC are mixing up their modal auxiliary verbs, accidentally positioning Reform as a government in waiting. The use of 'will' signals the future tense carrying implied certainty, rather than the hypothetical scenario suggested by 'would.' www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

I'm waiting to see how the "serious broadsheets" re-draw their defensive lines now that the real story about Jason Arday comes - hopefully - into clearer focus with the suspension of Nathan Cofnas, the racist.

Which other academics – or "prominent figures" as Hugh Muir calls Jason Arday – have @theguardian.com's "professional, responsible, empathetic journalists" scrutinized in this way?

friend showed me this: The Sun's racist attack against Benjamin Zephaniah in 1987 when he went to.... Cambridge 39 years before Jason Arday

I think @theguardian.com's complicity is disproportionately significant because it was the 1 place Jason Arday might have hoped to find fair reporting. Imagine feeling there was no place of refuge; the isolation & despair. They ran him as their top online story for 2 DAYS while the planet burned.

#JasonArday phoned me a few days ago to talk to someone who knows what media abuse feels like. His untimely death shows why we need part 2 of the Leveson enquiry into media conduct

What a shame that #Newsnight only managed to find interviewees like these - people able to provide context and an alternative view backed up by fact - after Jason Arday died.

Jason Arday has committed suicide. He was never the story. Proud of yourselves, @theguardian.com ?

Sally@sallyapiacere.bsky.social

Why is the resignation of Jason Arday main news? Sure, it’s an awfully sad thing and pulls in so many directions. But the only reason it’s the @theguardian.com top story is prurience. I worry for this man’s wellbeing.

This chart does sort of summarise the Starmer government. Just not really in the way it was intended.

I guess, "Posh Uni messes up its generally rigorous recruitment process in unseemly haste to redress a lack of diversity in academe, the root causes of which lie outside of academe," isn't as exciting as: Jason Arday is a fabulist! Heyyyy, look at our clicks! Update our ad sales dept! #JasonArday

The most terrifying enshittification I've discovered has been learning that Microsoft Word documents no longer auto-save if you are not saving them to one of their own proprietary cloud services. I'm slapping control-S like it's 1999.

No rain here, but it came within a field or two. Close enough that we could hear the rain laughing, hear the rain handing out crisp new five pound notes, hear the rain praising home decoration choices of the houses it fell upon.

You don't have to a Green Party supporter to deplore the amount of shit that Zack Polanski has to deal with. He must really frighten the establishment. #Newsnight

10yo pianist Toby just made this excellent joke: The Green Man lives in the greenhouse. The Blue Man lives in the bluehouse. Q: Who lives in the White House? A: The Orange Man! 🤡 🤣
