Liz Truss was always crackers (I worked with her for six months in 2012). But she wasn't completely delusional. It's quite sad really. A lot of Tory MPs who backed her knowing she wasn't remotely equipped should be deeply ashamed.

I'm sure there must be more fascinating stories about her past than bonkers and tiresome! Tim Harford was at uni with her but won't reveal anything 😒

I get the focus on her handling of the economy in particular but it always struck me as alarming that she appointed Coffey SoS for Health AND DPM…for… reasons. That said, I remain grateful for Coffey drawing attention the attention of NHS workers to the importance of the Oxford comma!

She’ll likely still be doing things like Remembrance Sunday in 30 years time so that one day people yet to be born will point at their TV’s and say “Oh THAT’S Liz Truss.” The modern version of being damned by the gods, like Sisyphus or Prometheus!

What particularly pissed me off about that column is the central claim isn't remotely true. Men are called bonkers, or some variant, all the time.

It's true though that Truss is a kind of totem for the Left now. There are reams of hate threads with doctored images of her on Bsky, everyone calling her names. Does seem a bit disproportionate & sexist.

I mean she did more damage to the economy than anyone else and has spent the time since wrapped in racist and conspiratorial nonsense, so I think she actually deserves more hatred, not less.

Truss was disastrous and you're right about those who encouraged her. I feel she is self-harming. I wonder why family and friends are not intervening more. Maybe they have tried? As for Long, she's savaged Megan Markle with such viciousness. It borders on obsession. So much for the 'Sisterhood'!

For some reason, I had never read Camilla Long's columns until she started writing restaurant reviews. I found them so weird (and bad) that I began reading her poltical columns....no better and more troubling

I've always thought of her as the AJ Liebling of British columnists; she is not the dumbest or the most needlessly unpleasant, but nobody who is dumber than her is quite as mean and nobody who is meaner than her is as dumb.

I have friends who thought that Truss would be a good leader, but they watch GBeebees! How much is their fault, I'm not sure? My real loathing is reserved for those Tory MPs, all of whom would have known she was a liability & the media charlatans promoting her!!

A local MP (Saqib Bhatti) came to our business during the leadership election and confidently said he was backing her. I looked into his eyes for any hint of deeper understanding of the choice he was making. He was certain in his support. When you see a genuine imbecile, it is quite a shock.

The white stuff in the 'house' used by the foreign secretary at the time, it seemed like she was on something always, but was ok when she supported the EU? How much did she make becoming a brexiteer?! The mini budget was epic criminality, networks made a lot of money, what an epic toxic criminal!

that has always perplexed me. the MP's who made Truss leader, were they fooled by her, or understood how bad she would be but rationalised making her leader despite her lack of talent could be contained & some other mythical attributes would work for the party?

From what I can remember that leadership contest went to the 100,000 or so party members and they preferred her to the brown man who got the job later on anyway when no-one opposed him, i like to think of it as their guess who's coming to downing street moment

Sunak won 137 votes from MPs, 20 more than Truss. As I recall it, there was speculation that some of those supporting her did so knowing that the membership just wouldn’t vote for Sunak, so best to side with the winner, they thought. Their suspicions about the membership were correct, of course.

so in the end it came down to the folly of allowing the rank and file to vote on the parliamentary leaders... surely that has failed as a system often enough in enough countries to be abandoned? MPs have to work for/with the leader they alone should choose the eader

didn't realise the tories had embraced this ridiculous self defeating let the party members vote for the parliamentary leader model... in that case i can only put it down the Monty python punchline. we gave the job to the woman with the biggest tits!! or of course the racism in the shires.

i find it fascinating and confusing. For people like Truss how much of their decline is genuine or performative. She is obvs intelligent..its like conspiracy theorists? if so there is a genuily wellness issues. perhaps Jenrick more peformative

They don't do shame. The Tories enabled her appointment knowing she was unfit to run a whelk stall let alone occupy high office.

I genuinely believe she had some kind of massive breakdown on the back of her disastrous premiership, and that family and friends should have had some kind of intervention. She really has lost the plot. And I take no pleasure in any if this.

We don’t unless you rely on the MPs of the governing party removing their leader. It absolutely wouldn’t work where a party was in thrall to a leader doing terrible things.

It doesn't matter if the system theoretically exists on paper if it doesn't in practice. And in practice, with the US two party system as it is, an American president can do all manner of obviously corrupt and incompetent shit and still have no fear of being removed by the Senate.
