"The experience of reading BANK JOB is like nothing so much as hearing the ravings of someone who is furious at her smoke alarm for burning down her house. Time and again, Truss gets confused about basic facts, the passage of time, and the basics of how cause-and-effect works."

thenewworld.co.ukLiz Truss’s new mini-book is every bit as bad as her mini-budgetBANK JOB - the crazy capitals are hers - is full of conspiracy theory, but zero self-awareness

This is great, because most parents think of their children as callous dullards who hate animals, so it's really picked out the traits that makes her daughter unique, here.

"If the RNLI finds you drowning at sea, would Nigel Farage prefer for them to ask for you to produce your passport before they fish you out of the water? If you’re unfortunate enough to be drowning without the correct identification to hand, should they leave you to drown?"

“Imagine the backlash if it were to go wrong! Reawakening the forces of reaction could lead to hostility towards foreigners and minority communities, nationalist agitators sticking flags all over the place, far right violence on our streets... Who’d want to live through that?”

"The early days of Andy Burnham’s government have made Starmer’s look positively energetic: a PM who usually loves nothing more than being on camera has studiously avoided saying a word as he loses control of law and order in Britain, and his home secretary seems determined to appease the thugs."

"Labour is bad, the Conservatives are good, and we’re not sure about Reform. Crime is terrifying, but we want every gruesome detail about it. Hot tubs are a menace. And, wherever possible, we want a nice photo of a lady in a dress, please. That’s just the Daily Mail way."

thenewworld.co.ukSpending a week inside the mind of the Daily MailI read the paper every day for seven days straight. It is a lurid stew of gruesome crime reporting, anti-Labour rants and stories about hot tubs

When "white sauce" in fish pie Contains cheese, it’s a lie. That’s a mornay.

Anon Opin@anonopin.bsky.social

I hate it when food presenters describe a white sauce with cheese in it as a béchamel. It's not. A béchamel is a simple white sauce. Add cheese and it's a mornay. But let's not using the French words and just call one a plain white sauce and the other a cheese sauce.
