a lot of people act like there's a trade being offered where we give up trans athletes in sports and in exchange fascism is defeated forever

I clocked my high school crush as an ideal husband and father, spent two years scheming to get him to ask me out, stayed together (looong distance) for 4 years of college…we’ve been together for fifteen years and I was super correct and literally no one else should do this.

I don’t mean to diminish these people at all!! Some of my very best friends are eaters of the weird, gross, “why is it sour though?”, cucumber offal.

Sarah Badding@sarahbadding.bsky.social

They love to talk about that whole “cilantro tastes like soap” gene. But call me when they figure out the splicing variant that renders some unbothered by a mouthful of cucumber seeds and associated viscera.

Taking a short personal moment away from my identity as a kohlrabi hate account to ponder the existence of the second dumbest CSA prestige vegetable (the lemon cucumber).

Sarah Badding@sarahbadding.bsky.social

There is not a single use case for kohlrabi that is not more enjoyable when served by another vegetable. Why this cultivar was ever perpetuated when it seemingly cropped up as a prank vegetable that minimizes every desirable brassica quality is beyond me.

You know how the first time you get one of the fancy cucumbers at the store you’re like “UH OH, idk if I can willingly return to the regular cheap ones”? Lemon cucumbers were plausibly bred specifically to solve this problem by making you long for the OG.

Me to my husband as his eyes glaze over watching me do my skincare: I don’t think you understand how important my youthful hotness could be when I have to score a replacement for you when you inevitably leave me for how annoying and expensive you find my skincare.

Going to pick up my homesteading ass SIL and forgot to bring her the kohlrabi from our fridge. The best thing to do with kohlrabi is gift it to a vegetable nerd. They won’t want it either but they will have to pretend they do.

Sarah Badding@sarahbadding.bsky.social

My hot take is that no one actually likes kohlrabi and it is only cultivated as a prestige vegetable so people can tactfully signal to others that they have patronized a farmer’s market or CSA.

Oh yeah? Well I recently saw him do an even tinier jazz gig on the plastic bongos on a playground where we happened upon him and his family and almost misplaced our toddler because we were trying to confirm from a respectable distance it was really him (yes this is a true story)

Emily Herring@emilyherring.bsky.social

Just saw Flea do a jazz gig in a tiny venue in Paris and it was MAGICAL

This was in Atlanta, not Los Angeles btw. My poor husband who took up the bass in college largely due to his lifelong idolization said “wow, I forgot what I planned to say fifteen years ago if I ever met him”

Ok I KNOW that the darnedest things other people’s kids say are boring internet chaff but my three year old just said in complete earnestness “I have never been to real life. Is real life a country?”

Yeah sorry but “concepting a new restaurant” sounds like the most fun thing ever? Like what joyless ghoul would want beep boop machine to do that for them? If there was a job that was just “make up restaurants”, I would want that job.

Imagine a year without five consecutive hours of sleep and it’s the same year everyone starts talking about sleepmaxxing

Feeling more and more these days that I am not online enough to meaningfully connect with online people and too online to engage substantively with earth people. Result is just me asking my husband “do you know what/who [this] is?” twelve times a week.

"Someone tried to strangle Sneako", "Clavicular just had a drug overdose", I refuse to believe that understanding any of these headlines is better for me than chain-smoking

My mom famously got a math degree because her sixth grade math teacher told her girls didn’t really need to know math.

Faine Greenwood@faineg.com

Funny story: my career in drones exists because I have a arithmetic learning disability, tested awfully in math and couldn’t study STEM in college, and became so angered by how normal it was to look down upon non-tech people in the 2010s that I decided to master a hard tech field out of pure spite.

My next venture will be a video series where I just make foods my toddler has verbally invented. Looking at a Spanish tortilla with sour cream: “You made me a pumpkin pie cake with raspberry frosted mini wheats frosting and yogurt with sour cream frosting!”

Tell your friends not to seek out this knowledge. The heaping praise from the “I thought I hated Turkey” crowd is all some of us have to carry us through to new years.

Faine Greenwood@faineg.com

skill issue and for God’s sake I really do want to offer free “how to make a good turkey” tutoring to people in the internet age it is simply not hard to find the not-at-all-hidden knowledge about how to make a turkey taste good though

Since I'm not a devout observer of halloween season (I know, I'm banned from the internet now), I consider October an extension of thanksgiving season so it's time to start processing my thanksgiving menu thoughts which I think I'll do publicly this year instead of in the notes app /🧵

But SPEAKING of sweet potatoes…for the last several years I’ve done a toasted salty Swiss meringue on top of mine in place of marshmallows and I’m yet to have any complaints. I just toss the leftover yolks into the sweet potato mix.

Pie takes: I have always wanted to love coconut cream pie but I do not. I don't like the texture of shredded coconut mixed into the custard. It gives a pre-chewed food vibe I don't really vibe with. I feel like there are variations that would fix this problem for me.

My 🏈 season hot take is that buffalo cauliflower dip is basically just as good as buffalo chicken. The buffalo chicken food theme is built around crispy chicken IMO and if you’re just going to pulverize it with cheese and scoop it onto chips there is no reason to exclude the vegetarians. #GoDawgs

I have long been of the opinion that SVU truly poisoned the American mind in so many intersecting ways.

/3 But a huge plurality, at least, of the modern GOP is of the opinion that noticing bigoted trash is more un-American and destructive than BEING bigoted trash: that dehumanizing fellow Americans based on immutable characteristics is morally superior to criticizing anyone for doing that.

Ok returning to this...I cannot stress how much pastry is not a strength of mine but I do wonder if this is a case where a blind bake + stove top filling might be a route around oven time. How to best handle the top crust is a question here. Yes I know you can make pies the day before.

Sarah Badding@sarahbadding.bsky.social

...getting a filling to the requisite 200˚F takes FOREVER and is not ideal on a day with such extreme oven traffic so I think I made it to about 195 which wasn't enough to slay the raw flour taste. This all kind of killed my motivation for the original idea which I do think would have ruled.

We are not Mac & Cheese for Thanksgiving people but this popped up shortly after we discussed throwing it in the mix this year for a change of pace. The feta/sage/sweet potato combo is calling to me.

Nigella Lawson@nigella.bsky.social

It’s Canadian Thanksgiving and although I know the Sweet Potato Macaroni Cheese that’s #RecipeOfTheDay doesn’t exactly fit the bill, it’s such a favourite, and I thought it could just possibly find a place at the table! www.nigella.com/recipes/swee...

lol I had my first pregnancy in California and my husband was borderline militant about me eating foods with a prop 65 warning on them. Second kid gestated in Georgia, my apologies to him.

Tried to get my husband a milkshake on my way home last night. Burger place wouldn’t take my online order because it was under $8. I called and an AI picked up the phone. I asked to order a milkshake. It told me pickup orders could only made online and texted me the link. I hate it here.

Wife did a gravel order from Lowe’s for me to pick up. I drive to the pick up dock. Guy with a radio comes out. I show him the order receipt. He radios inside. They tell him to tell me to tell my wife to download the app so that she can check in on it to let them know I’m here to pick up the order.

My fave silly idea today has been instead of oyster stuffing doing stuffing oysters which would be some type of oysters Rockefeller vibe with traditional stuffing components in the topping. (alas there are not enough people in our group who eat oysters to go through the trouble)

I can't really get anyone in my family psyched about a pumpkin cheesecake moment so I've gotten it in my head that I might try a savory cheesecake appetizer this year. Saw a recipe for a butternut and sage one that looks intriguing and also like a great Wednesday baking candidate.

Last year I wanted to do a dark berry/cherry pie with red wine and mulling spices and the day of realized that the particular frozen berry blend I had requested wasn't purchased and I instead had a standard strawberry/blueberry/raspberry bag. Made a pie anyway that was almost really good except...
