@sarahinscience.bsky.social on undermining CSIRO's ACCESS(AustralianCommunity Climate& Earth System Simulator) model "To put it as bluntly as I can, this is serious shit. If we don't hv an Australian climate model, we are shooting ourselves in the foot when it comes to adapting to climate change."

Yung En Chee@yungenchee.bsky.social

Australia is the only country with climate modelling focused on the southern hemisphere. “These cuts will make us suboptimal in core climate science capability in atmospheric and oceanographic modelling, and in understanding the concepts that really drive our weather and climate.”

Yeah......this ain't a great forecast. Word on the street it will rival the heatwaves of 2009 and 1939. Some inland parts of Australia will get into the high 40s. The last i checked, some models were Predicting low 50s in some inland places. Im really nervous about this one. #heatwave #Australia

It's 28 degrees at 8.30am in #Canberra. My girls are making the most of outside time while they can. A north-westerly is getting stronger -not good for fire weather. Fingers crossed we see this thru unscathed. Thinking of everyone affected by the #Victorianfires.

View from my front yard in #CANBERRA this afternoon. The fire is 300km away, in Victoria. Much of Australia is currently in a heatwave, in some places the hottest temps for >15 years. Cool change forcasted in south-east from tomorrow onwards, but this is a recipe for disaster for firefighting

🚨New paper on heatwaves in a net zero world 🚨 In our study, led by @sarahinscience.bsky.social, we find that the intensity, length and frequency of heatwaves do not return to pre-industrial levels under net zero - and in many regions barely improve at all. iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1...

HUGE sigh of relief here in Australia! We've said NO to the conservatives. Actually, not just no, we've given them the middle finger and ran as fast as we could in the opposite direction. There's no way they'll win now. Even Dutton lost his seat....GOOOOOONE!! Byeeeee, Felicia 👋

"Australian people have voted for Australian values" BOO YAH!! It's a bloody landslide, 87 seats in the upper house and counting. Can't help but feel proud that my fellow citizens sent such a clear message. See ya never, Dutton. Take your whack nuclear plan with you. #auspol #Australianelection

6yo:"mum did you go to university?" Me [thinking this is my moment to shine & discuss how women can achieve great things]: "yes. I have the highest level of education! Its called a PhD!" 6yo: "who is the tallest person at your work?" Clearly we're not quite ready for this type of conversation yet 😂

Yet another beautiful and warm yet highly unseasonal day here in Canberra. Normally by now we've had frost, with chilly nights and mornings. There's a saying here that you should not your heater on before ANZAC day (April 25). Snowballs chance in hell of heaters being turned on early this year ☀️🌡😕

A few weeks ago I gave a presentation at the NASEM workshop on impact attribution. At 7.30am local time, clashing perfectly with getting 3 kids out the door. My middle one joined me and no doubt provided some entertainment for everyone. she loved pulling faces in the camera!

Gorgeous (but unseasonal and a bit concerning) weather in Canberra - high 20's for days on end. This should be a dream for generating home solar, but due to the grid not coping with so much of it, our system shuts down for hours on end. Infuriating to see so much clean energy literally go to waste.

remember this going into the election - Dutton peddles bullshit about what's possible with renewable energy. The REAL issue is that there's more solar in many suburbs than what the grid can handle, so many home units have to shut down, wasting a shitload. We lose up to 30KWh/day because of this.

It's Not A Race@itsnotarace2025.bsky.social

Dutton is just making shit up. #renewables #DontRiskDutton #auspol #election2025

thank f**k, a small blessing, let's hope it lasts.....

BREAKING: In a reversal, all NOAA Research sites will now remain online with "no interruption in service," according to the agency. NOAA had previously moved to cancel the research division's cloud services contract. Story for @bloomberg.com (free link): www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

So I've not been all that active on SM lately. Partly other work responsibilities, partly (lack of) time, partly there's SO MUCH going on in the world ATM and it's a bit much for my ADHD brain. How's everyone else going? how are we feeling? is there anything giving you positive vibes ATM pls share!

Water has been CRAZY hot off WA recently l. So many marine ecosystems are in drastic danger when #marineheatwaves like this one occurs. We'll know the impacts in due course. Brace yourselves- they won't be good.

Andrew B. Watkins@windjunky.bsky.social

Waters around northern tropical Australia were by far the hottest on record for January 2025. Data from 1900-2025 from ERSSTv5. Typically northern Australian water temperatures peak in late summer www.bom.gov.au/cgi-bin/clim...

A dire sign we're permanently crossing heat tolerance thresholds. Climate change will make this far worse, I am certain. We must work harder to reduce emissions, but that is no longer enough. It is imperative we also adapt. Thanks to Tom Matthews for leading this piece @natclimchange.bsky.social

Colin Raymond@regclimo.bsky.social

Some thoughts from our team, led by Tom Matthews, on how the 2024 Hajj heat tragedy can be seen as a shot across the bow from a changing climate -- and the critical data and research-to-action hurdles which it exemplifies. doi.org/10.1038/s415...

"We likely just lived through the warmest year on record. If that sounds familiar, it is because 2023 currently holds the title." — @drshepherd2013.bsky.social #YIR #BadNews www.forbes.com/sites/marsha...

Can confirm that the recent humidity has ben horrendous. Even in non-coastal Canberra.

David Jones@ozhillbilly.bsky.social

This is why it’s so humid around Australia ATM, with SSTs at record levels driven by global warming. Each degree increases absolute humidity by about 8%. More at www.bom.gov.au/cgi-bin/clim...

Today I introduced The Wizard of Oz to my girls. I LOVED this movie as a kid. The tornado amazed & terrified me. Was my earliest introduction to the awe of weather. While in the tornado, Dorothy says "we must be inside the cyclone" 🤦‍♀️ Now i don't think I can view the movie the same again 😅
