I often wonder if this is by design. Exhaustion & stress shift people away from "System 2" (i.e., deliberative & complex) towards "System 1" thinking (mental shortcuts & knee-jerk responses). Yes, that dichotomy glosses over nuance. But a society entrenched in System 1 is easier to manipulate.

Maybe the most important political story of our time. People just want the bullshit to stop.

Very nice article. A particularly insightful point: the pitfalls of solving "an access problem while creating an identity problem".

Editing a longer draft into shorter drafts is writing, is thinking, is deciding things. It’s as intimate, perhaps even more intimate, as human, perhaps even more human, as any act of writing.

Congratulations to @maramather.bsky.social, and to anyone who gets to work with her! Some great positions here for researchers at multiple stages!

Mara Mather@maramather.bsky.social

Starting September 1, I will be working with a team to start a new research center at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development in Berlin. We currently have a couple of positions posted but there will be more so if you are interested stay tuned and feel free to get in touch.

In my recent Intro Psych lectures on cognitive psychology, I didn’t have time to delve into its history. It’s a fascinating story. Instead, I referred students to my supplemental online lecture on its background and origin, which plays as a YouTube playlist. Check it out here. Feel free to share.

The hippocampus sits at the interface of perception & memory, allowing us to link past, present, & future through its role in generating predictions. Excited to share this theme issue in @royalsociety.org's Philosophical Transactions B, co-edited with @barense.bsky.social & @mariamaly.bsky.social

At the end of the term I asked my college creative wriing students to submit anonymous thoughts on AI. No real surprises: Mood ranges from resignation to despair, capitulation from embittered erosion of standards to total, feelings of betrayal from deep to furious. 1/

I’ve been really enjoying Tom Griffith’s "The Cognition Project" lately. A couple of observations: - Hearing the history of the cognitive revolution directly from the giants who lived it is priceless. - Recent AI advances have sort of robbed us of the joy of being amazed by human cognition. 🧠🤖

Question for the hive mind: Are there extra steps you recommend to help ensure that Prolific participants are real (i.e., not bots)? I’ve thought about adding a very complex math problem with a <1 second response window, filtering out those who get it right. But I suspect this isn’t ideal.

The sky is not falling; high-quality platforms (Prolific, Verasight, CR Connect) have low rates of apparent bots. osf.io/preprints/ps... But also not zero; vigilance is very much needed!

I believe one of the most important things we can do for our kids is to model resilience. So I’d like to thank this year’s journal decision letters (so far) for the opportunity. Onwards!

It's an approach that Marvin and I also tried to weave throughout our 𝘊𝘰𝘨𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 textbook, mining news, history, and everyday experience for compelling real-world illustrations of cognition in action. 2/3

The 2nd edition of Marvin's and my textbook, 𝘊𝘰𝘨𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, is out! A labor of love. We hope our excitement for the field shines through. And look at this wonderful team at Oxford University Press we got to work with! You can request a free examination copy here: pages.oup.com/he/us/cognit...

(One quick note: my lab's recent work on effort aversion — described later in the podcast — builds on the foundational work of Westbrook, Inzlicht, Botvinick, and others. I should have made that clearer in the moment.) 2/3

Although AI and tech promise to increase the accessibility of education (a public benefit), we need to stay alert to what might get lost. Who we believe our teachers to be — and the degree to which we relate and feel personal connection to them — 𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴. 3/4

All participants heard the same lecture. Half read a relatable backstory for the lecturer; the others were told that the voice was AI generated. The backstory fostered a greater sense of personal connection, which translated into greater curiosity to learn more about the 𝘵𝘰𝘱𝘪𝘤. 2/4

The purpose of assignments isn’t just to get As. It’s to try, see where you went wrong, and try to improve. It’s a problem that institutions, and their incentive structures, often misunderstand this as much as students do.

PSA: With recent spikes in the news, I decided to get tested for my immunity to measles. Results came back saying I had none. If you got your vaccination back in the 1970s like me, you might want to check too.

Academics who love doing public outreach and #scicom don't always get this level of support from their universities. That's a shame because the more we share knowledge and passion, the more it encourages investment in what we do. Thanks to #UNSW for investing energy and time in this profile!
