A LOT of work has gone into this. On most platforms, it will release as a new game, and we're working to make sure that owners of the original A Fold Apart will be able to get it for free. Please signal boost if you can!
A Fold Apart: Recrafted is a story about distance, communication, and finding your way back to each other — one fold at a time ❤️📃🫶
Coming soon!

I went so far as to do sobel filtering on the paper to make little ridges where the paper folds stack up. It’s one of those almost invisible #gamedev improvements that you feel 😆
A puzzle game about communication.
A love story about distance.
A world you can fold.

As a studio owner, it would be irresponsible to have my team spend a week making FREE DLC just because I think it’s cool as fuck...
We are totally not going to release FREE DL for a puzzle game this week 👀

I backed the Fangoria Compendium kickstarter and it's cool to see the book finishing up before Halloween. Not sure if I'll get it before then, but still excited.
I can't wait for people to see this on a bigger screen. All of the art, across hundreds of scenes, was changed to make it look great on modern machines. #gamedev
Making it work takes patience, communication, understanding…
…and occasionally folding reality in half ❤️📃

"What is certain, however, is that a vast sum of our money will be wasted, countless Torontonians will find themselves profoundly inconvenienced for extended periods, and, eventually, a cyclist will get struck by a car. But at least the congestion will be worse." spacing.ca/toronto/2026...
I should do a video about the A Fold Apart #gamedev process and data layout to show all the weird hoops we needed to jump through to: make the Unity editor run without totally bogging down, let the team work on the same parts of the game at the same time, and make the runtime work with <1.25GB RAM.
In #Unity3D, you need to worry about dependencies. If a scene references an asset, it will get loaded into memory (EVEN IF HIDDEN). We broke our game into hundreds of environment-only scenes that can be dynamically loaded, and then made tools so we could work without creating dependencies. #gamedev

I still feel bad for the spun out studios because they’ll likely need to conduct their own furloughs/layoffs while they seek project funding or acquisition. That kind of thing is heartbreaking. GDC 2025, I hugged a sobbing CEO who lost his biggest client and had to do layoffs almost immediately.
We’re 5 days into Next Fest, Pioneers! Thank you to everyone so far for playing the demo, sharing your feedback, or leaving a review. It means a lot to us!
With only a few days left, we've shared another deep dive that talks about the Wonders, and why they matter in the game 👉 bit.ly/4uHJS7P
"This is a kids' game, and it's layering multiple currencies atop one another to obfuscate the cost of things, as well as using pop-ups, timer bars, and "buy" buttons to offer temporary boosts and, generally speaking, remove the game's in-built friction."
You know it's real when the launch trailer appears...
Only 5 days until Echo Generation 2 is out! 🔥🚀

That sucks. I was so touched when Paste named A Fold Apart as one of the best 40 games in 2020. It was a bright spot after a project that had been incredibly draining.
Fucking hell. Pouring one out for Paste Games—one of the best and most consistent sites for criticism in our time.
It took chances on new writers and kept indie coverage alive while other sites lost resources. Short-sighted to abandon it like this.
LMAO But Why Tho? Dying because of a shitty developer is not what I had on my bingo card.
We have 48 hours to figure out what to do for a new host and find a developer to help us.
Longtime college friend of mine, Mike Prinke, was among those laid off at Epic Games: he has been fighting terminal brain cancer, and now he, his wife, and kid, have no income or health insurance.
Sharing here in hopes it can reach the right people on their behalf.

I have done versions of this, prefaced my presentations saying that the visuals were placeholder, and still had people ask “so is this what the final version will look like?”
Placeholder assets in a game should look obnoxiously temporary, so obvious that no one would mistake it for the final asset. In past games we've used the doge dog (rip) as an icon, hot pink versions of characters, our CEO's head, etc.
If you use a temp asset that seems passable, it may stay there.

I’m so angry about this. I get that bureaucracy can be a nightmare but this is insane. It’s already nearly a decade behind schedule (with electrification promised in 2017, 2024, 2027 IIRC). Kicking something down the road 10 years is like planning to do nothing.
I lament how paper flipping never captured properly in GIFs because it happened too fast. I'll make a slow version to show it off because this new lighting looks so good and it looks even better in motion. #gamedev#gameart
So curious to see this. I learned about bitcoin in its first year, and the name “cryptocurrency” threw me off because it didn’t sound like real currency. I didn’t think any nation would give up its ability to manipulate its own currency or allow a shadow economy to develop.
Feels like crypto couldn’t grow the way it has without the buy in of traditional financial institutions who claimed their stake before making it accessible to the general public. i.e. they might not think it’s a good financial instrument and might just need bag holders
Hey, Mighty Yell is 9 years old today.
I wanted to feel energized and happy while working making games. That was the goal.
So I made a place where employees get overtime back and put their health first.
We haven't had any million-sellers but we're still fuckin goin'.
Long live Mighty Yell.
A short process video for one of my favorite commissions. The client asked me to illustrate a sentient system of vegetation that has latched itself on a skeleton. It is supposed to be gentle despite it’s scary appearance. #art#commissionsopen#commissions#dndart#ttrpg#dnd#characterdesign
Yup. The team needed to be in sync with tech setting rules and both art and level design working within those constraints consistently. It’s a lot easier said than done - especially if the tech constraints create a brand new workflow. Kudos to them.
Just all around great work for Cairn's tech and art team (and the Tech Art Director) - especially considering a wild set of gameplay-imposed constraints.

Found my Ill Communication CD, tossed it on. Thought years of streaming music had desensitized me, but my ears instantly recognized the good stuff. A funny reminder that as much as I'm sold HD and ULTRA HD streaming, it's an inferior product to tech from the 80s.
I haven’t baked bread in a month! Needed to get back into the habit. I didn’t mess around with the new bread pan and just used tiles and a water tray like I’m used to. Also, the poolish was 48hrs old and I wasn’t sure how it would turn out. Wouldn’t do that again though.
so AI is bad for countless reasons but I personally was not yet aware that "draft a man into a fictional conflict and stage a mass shooting" was one of those

New piece in the Toronto Star from Cara and me, on research showing how the middle-class housing crisis negatively impacts all of us, not just those priced out of homes.
Read here:
"Man convicted of manslaughter after girlfriend dies hiking in winter storm" sounds insane until you get into the details.
He put an inexperienced hiker into harm's way despite explicit warnings and waved away numerous attempts to rescue her! The punishment was too lax here, not too severe.
A narrative turn-based combat RPG themed around food, flavors, and family drama. It gets spicy. Dosa Divas demo's here: store.steampowered.com/app/4316300/...
This is maddening. Imagine finding out that you paid for a service that then just automated damage to your reputation without your permission or knowledge. Also I wonder if the support was AI or if it is outsourced to a company that is completely disconnected from anyone who can solve the problem.
Dug into this absolutely wild thing happening to Finji. The deeper I read into their increasingly baffling conversations with TikTok "support" the more I felt like I was on something.

Out on the ice of lake Nipissing at 1:30AM and I bring in a big catfish. My buddy notices that it has two lines in its mouth. At the other end of that line is my other fishing rod that got yanked down the hole before anyone could grab it - at 5PM earlier that day. Buddy knew we’d get ‘er back.

Love a good beard, but sometimes different normals across adjacent meshes give you an unwanted one. Here's how to fix it with @blender.org and the DataTransfer modifier. Add the modifier to one of the meshes and have it target the mesh with the normals you want to copy. Fixed! #gamedev#gameart
