See, this is that Papanekian design principle of taking a naturally occuring species (that has been sorta perfected by evolution) and applying its properties for designing objects for other purposes somehow (like helmets and armor).

As we're slowly leaving the Anthropocene behind us and go into the Novacene, I just gotta mention that Roombas are kinda like trilobites. Just look at the lil' things crawling around on the ground.

Prediction is actually easy. It's getting it right that's hard. It gets easier though if you're the one in control of the tools. The real future is and always has been an uncertainty and a continuously changing process of infinite possibilities.

Prediction is hard. Especially about the future. That Yogi Berra gem proves that you don't have to be a sf writer to get irritated with people insisting that you must know what's going to happen tomorrow, but (as a sf writer), I can tell you that this is one of our main occupational hazards.

Resultat: Angst überhaupt was zu machen.

That's cause in the 1970s designers and inventors like Victor Papanek and Richard Buckminster Fuller had all kinds of discussions around technology that impacted design and tech movements at the time.

Steve Farrugia@fasterandworse.com

have you noticed how "innovation" became the buzzword of tech ghouls, not "invention"?

Do me all a favor and go read at least Design for the Real World and Operating Manual for Spaceship Earth before having endless online conversations around semantics of "innovation" and "invention" and ascribing it to current events in the tech world.

This thread tells me that really good UI/UX designers are basically tech godesses with skills beyond mere mortals and we should build them statues (instead of to some shitty dictator) Toss a coin to your (neurodivergent) designer that's been bullied half their life for trying to fix shit like this

what are the worst dev tools you've ever worked with and can you share pictures with me

This goes for all human "creative" endeavours. Heck, it even goes for many of the institutions we know, like museums, universities and libraries. Throw Wikipedia in there too and the entire Internet as we've come to know it. All the more well-known things actually started out smaller at some point.

Thomas Marrone@thomasthecat.bsky.social

One of the most insightful comments about game development came from a former boss. He said “Making a game is like starting a band. You can’t throw money at a new studio with random AAA veterans and expect it to crank out a hit.” 🧵

I'm not kidding on the museum and library side btw. Both of these started as private collections that grew so large at some point they figured it would be beneficial amongst other things to have others have access too. There's the whole NOTHING BIG WORKS catch though.

All big human empires crumbled. All the big dinosaurs died out. The old Internet has half died out already. Many bigger social platforms have already become kinda desolate of real human interaction once people moved on somewhere else.

Oh, what's that? Half the Internet is fucked cause of a couple errors in a technical system? How are ya'll liking that well programmed computers make no mistakes now, huh? What's that? There are people out there that are very detail-oriented and always make sure that everything runs flawlessly?

It's a bit weird to be meeting more and more young people that have zero recollection of this actually happening. As in, real memories, not just seeing it through recordings or reading about it in books or on Wikipedia, or hearing it from someone older that's been alive back then.

And honestly, it was this moment that made me suspicious of the USA as a nation throughout my entire childhood and life, and in fact, pretty much any western nation state and the entire idea of nationalism.

NOTHING. BIG. WORKS. (without causing ever more problems)

"It's heartbreaking" - Numerous exhibitors at Gamescom have reported that their equipment, including laptops containing game code, has been stolen. The robberies have seemingly been taking place overnight when the venue is closed. www.videogameschronicle.com/news/its-hea...

Neurodivergent dilemma. You tell people you're different, they might treat you shittier for it. You don't tell people you're different, they might also treat you shittier, and then go "but why didn't you tell us sooner?" Funniest part, you gotta do this with every new person you meet in your life.

Schlewi@sepsndepsn.bsky.social

Erdmutter Gaia ist todtraurig und will uns was damit sagen.

One of the last barriers that somehow still exist when it comes to design theory being so ingrained in the worlds institutions is that these two (experience and education) are really the same kind of thing when it comes down to it.

Jahrhundert.'
