AOC: "As AI begins to encroach in our society, their goal is to take your cognition away from you. AI's goal is to take your thoughts away from you, your ability to think away from you, so that you become dependent on a machine ... reading books is active resistance"

Sports have enough cultural reach where the decisions they make, if good, can be flashpoints for larger societal change. This would be bad for the climate, but also bad for the fight against climate change.

In Texas, the State is removing climate change courses from the core curriculum. They have decided that climate change is just too dangerous to teach the students. This is indoctrination. I wrote an oped about it in the SA Express-News. Gift link: www.expressnews.com/opinion/comm...

Carlsberg Brewery offered Niels Bohr a house next to the brewery in honor of his 1922 Nobel Prize in Physics. One of the benefits of the house was a direct pipeline from the brewery, effectively providing Bohr with free and unlimited beer for life.

Some day I want to write a paper about how we turned higher ed into one big subsidy for business — all the while students are shamed for not paying more of this subsidy, and for not paying it faster. Instead of training their own workers, students and taxpayers must pay - and assume the risk

I had the exciting opportunity to write a guest post for @carbonbrief.org about our new paper on the expansion of extreme heat seasons around the world. Take a read for a digestible summary of our approach and key results!

Doing an 8-week workshop on redesigning courses for our new general education requirements. Each week includes a discussion board post and I now understand why students just pop these prompts into ChatGPT and copy and paste the output.

Investment in faculty and staff morale events for the semester have been announced. Today is "go to the art museum and look around during your lunch hour". December's is "come and make Christmas cookies" - We don't even get free pizza, we have to make our own food!

OK, I did eight months. It's college football season and the start of another school year so time to re-emerge.

2025: Pretty good (personally, at least) until the whole breaking my ankle thing. As I watch the London NYE festivities since I won't be awake at midnight here, I'm going to say farewell to social media until 2027 to try and become a better, deeper version of myself. Be good and do good, everyone.

Global CO2 from fossil fuels is projected to hit a record 38.1B metric tons in 2025, up 1.1%. Increases in the U.S., India and China, plus a 6.8% jump in aviation, outpace clean energy gains. Researchers warn that staying below 1.5°C is no longer plausible.

I'm the Indianapolis Colts' quarterback?

Rodger Sherman@rodger.bsky.social

2 years ago the Colts used a top-5 pick on a QB whose scouting profile was "the greatest athlete you on the planet, throws the ball one billion mph with no accuracy" but to unlock their offense they actually needed a middle-aged man who audibly goes "humph" when he sits down in his favorite chair

New AMS Statement: Dismantling NSF’s National Center for Atmospheric Research would weaken U.S. leadership in weather, water, and climate science, putting public safety at risk. For more than 60 years, NSF NCAR has improved forecasts and early warnings that save lives. More: https://bit.ly/4q6eChn

Before the 1990s, plane crashes caused by microbursts used to kill planeloads of people fairly regularly. Dr. Ted Fujita and NCAR scientists figured out how to detect microbursts and warn pilots about them. Since then? Zero airliner crashes from microbursts.
