In the song California girls are the beach boys saying whatever their other qualities we wish all the girls of the world were California girls because California girls are the best? Or are they saying they want all the girls to move to California so that every kind of girl is in California?

feels like at least part of what is happening is that a lot of people want politics to solve the "my life feels empty" problem and the populist right is directly appealing to them

An on going bit of mine is to ask my wife if she’d rather be either [insert famous historical figure] or [insert member of bone thugs n harmony] as we are falling asleep.

Rabbi Sandra@rabbisandra.org

So cool. I ask my partner what she thought about Bone Thugs N Harmony and she said “I don’t even know what that means” 🤣🤣🤦🏽‍♀️

I know it’s all culture war nonsense but right wingers criticizing the odyssey for having black people or whatever is so odd. It is an AMERICAN adaptation. The actors cannot speak Greek. Nobody has any relationship to any Ancient Greeks or whatever. It is not a Greek movie

Where have you gone Lindsey Graham? Our nation turns its lonely eyes to you. Woo Wooo Woo. What’s that you say Kash Patel, Lady G just passed the gates of hell. Ah well. Ah well

It’s kind of funny that every time one of these fascist groups makes an effort to be visible and intimidating, all the other fascist groups immediately call them feds or antifa. It must be so maddening

Alt National Park Service@altnps.bsky.social

No, Laura. It’s not “Antifa.” It was Patriot Front, a white nationalist organization. They covered their faces because they’re cowards who don’t want to be identified. We’ve been saying for over a year that ICE officers shouldn’t be allowed to wear masks either. They are cowards also.

I know the list is endless but I genuinely think trashing the legitimate congressionally chartered org for celebrating the 250th to instead hijack our national assets and taxpayer funds for his personality cult grifter crap should, in and of itself, be fully sufficient to merit removal from office.

we all make jokes about how woke 1 went too far but woke 1 was extremely, absolutely correct about how much these people were dogwhistling, absolutely correct about the direction they were going in, absolutely correct that how their beliefs were not compatible with a free society

This (The pronoun for God is God) came from me. It's not transphobic to refuse to use gendered--or human--pronouns for a being/existence that's not embodied. Maimonides calls it idolatry to ascribe human characteristics to Infinity; Cordovero says "all existence is God." More: (+ next skeet)

Today I’m remembering the very last people in America to be freed from chattel slavery, who were not the Texans who learned of the Emancipation Proclamation on this day in 1865, but thousands of people in Delaware, Kentucky and New Jersey, who were freed by the 13th six months later.

Gillian Brockell@gillianbrockell.com

Some years ago, I was chatting with a Retropolis reader, a young history student, and I mentioned there were several dozen people enslaved in New Jersey up until the day the 13th Amendment kicked in in December 1865. Y’all. He identified every one of them. njs.libraries.rutgers.edu/index.php/nj...

It has literally shattered their brains that an intelligent, educated black man could serve as the leader of the free world for eight years. This is the representation you sold your souls and your best interests for.

There’s been a lot of talk in this race about what makes a "real man." A man does what’s right when no one is watching. He upholds his commitments to his family and neighbors. He doesn’t lie, cheat, & steal his way through life. Real men serve others. Weak men serve themselves.

I don't remember right wingers getting upset about the farcical ahistoricity of 300 when that came out

It’s kind of weird that there are so many types of manosphere/men’s right guys. You could be a dude that bangs a thousand women, you could be an incel. You could be a navy seal, you can play call of duty. You could be a fitness freaks who counts his macros, you could be a couch potato. You could

be a titan of industry. You can be a NEET. You could be a pron addict, you can be a Trad Cath anti porn crusader. It’s really like the only requirement is being extremely angry at women all the time and being sort of a miserable person. Do they have one well adjusted guy? Or even a guy who is just

This flight made yet another stop, to the Republic of Georgia, that I hope was just for fuel but was probably also a deportation. Meaning people would’ve been shackled for 50+ hours. Longest one I’ve recorded this year. (The longest I’ve ever recorded is 82 hours, in December.)

Gillian Brockell@gillianbrockell.com

God almighty, Uzbekistan wasn’t the last stop. This ICE flight continued on to Pakistan via this circuitous route. Migrant passengers onboard will have been shackled for at least 43 hours.

Last night I had a nightmare about not being a good enough basketball player to make it to the NBA, and then I woke up, and to a world where I’m not a good enough basketball player for the NBA, but for some reason I’m ok with it

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. The blogosphere era was the right amount of internet. Just nerds writing about their own areas of expertise and disparate message boards you’d have to find to post at, and instead of being in your pocket, the internet was in a room you had to go to.
