BREAKING WaPo: A federal judge issued a temporary order Sunday blocking the Trump admin from airing those propaganda ads. But the administration blew past that deadline and ran two of the ads into the early hours of Monday, advertising data shows.

No, it's not unclear. He showed us why he wouldn't wear the camera. Hopefully the trial judge gives a good explanation of "negative inference" in the jury instructions.

Texas Tribune@texastribune.org

The ICE officer who shot a Venezuelan man in Austin was not using a body camera during the Sunday incident, according to news reports. The officer was issued a body camera, but it is unclear why he was not wearing the device during the shooting.

We've allowed a drunken frat and its network of criminal suppliers control of the federal government, with all the competence that implies.

So… countries that acquire the F-35 have to make massive investments in base security but the U.S. is shipping sensitive parts via UPS? Can we get off this ride now? 🤮

The $1 bond is its own kind of dig: government officials have no interest that could be harmed by the credentials and the chance the press will lose this First Amendment matter are negligible, so the bond requirement for TROs is met while commenting on the merits. Nice.

BREAKING: Trump appointed judge orders the White House to immediately restore press credentials.

What a way to learn the effect of your vote:

Certainly not to accuse those of us here of being terrorists and take precious lives. This is madness."

Stone may not solve problems like insulation, but especially in climates in which thermal mass is an effective energy conservation strategy it may rock the casbah.

In order to have elections that represent the breadth and extent of voter viewpoints, we need to abolish geographic districts in favor of a combination of cumulative voting and rank-ordered voting (in the process obsoleting "primary" elections and eliminating gerrymandering).

Pete Buttigieg@petebuttigieg.bsky.social

If I said we have a broken political system, it'd be the least memorable thing I said all day. We all know it. We all say it. The question is: Why do we act like it isn't? It can't go on like this.

"but must proceed" <-- uhm … why? Once the harm is admitted, insistence to act any way seems in the absence of some really compelling argument to be deeply pathological. And of course there is no argument, much less a compelling one, for erecting monuments to aggrandize a dementing grifter.

Kyle Griffin@kylegriffin1.bsky.social

Trump's arch will harm historic sites: Federal officials acknowledge that Trump's planned triumphal arch will unavoidably harm historic sites if built as planned — but they say the project must move forward, according to a National Park Service document and emails obtained by The Washington Post.

This is new. I'd been wondering how in a state prepared to elect Talarico a spineless toady of authoritarian masters like Abbot could manage to eke out a lead over someone standing up to improve life for Texans, and now it looks like Hinojosa holds the lead. Right on.

ICE cannot be reformed. It must be abolished.

Johnathan Perkins@johnathanperk.bsky.social

Based on my on-the-ground experience during last years raids in Los Angeles, currently in Philly, I’d estimate at least 25% of ICE agents are open White Nationalists. Watch this one throw up a white power AND “heil Hitler” salute combo. This is normal for ICE. This is ICE culture, plain and simple.

Making it easier for allies of the regime to coerce human subjects into experiments sounds like a policy Mengele would applaud. Pass.

Allison Gill@muellershewrote.com

HHS wants to relax regulations on human subject research (The Common Rule). For example, they want to redefine “undue influence” on vulnerable human research subjects (children, prisoners, disabled, culturally disadvantaged). 1/

You'd think a room full of attorneys would understand the concept of "capacity." They're treating this like a game. It's not the most shameful thing they've done, but it's really shameful. smh

He's not got any idea what he's even voting on. He has to be told how to vote. He's incapacitated. He's incapable of representing the people of Kentucky who are currently being taxed without representation.

"Sharp rise" is an understatement. A couple of years ago the increase of maternal death in Texas had already exceeded 50% and Paxton's letter campaign to terrorize hospitals into treating even women with a court order authorizing their treatment has only continued. www.nbcnews.com/health/women...

nbcnews.comA dramatic rise in pregnant women dying in Texas after abortion banExclusive analysis finds the rate of maternal deaths in Texas increased 56% from 2019 to 2022, compared with just 11% nationwide during the same time period.
steven monacelli@stevanzetti.bsky.social

Texas is delaying its typical September 1 release of maternal mortality data until December 1, conveniently timed to be after the midterm election. Recent reports have shown a sharp rise in ectopic pregnancy deaths after the abortion ban went into effect. www.austinchronicle.com/news/texas-p...

Pretending gerrymandering can be banned while we still have voting districts may be naïve. To cure the systematic problems that keep producing nonrepresentative election results, we must eliminate districts in favor of rank-ordered/instant-runoff cumulative voting (which also obsoletes primaries).

Allison Gill@muellershewrote.com

The threat of contempt worked. It’s over. Missouri republicans can’t use their stupid map for the midterms. The old map is still gerrymandered to hell, but we can correct that by adding seats to SCOTUS in 2029 and banning gerrymandering (among other things, of course)

If only there were a law that said: "Whoever makes or offers to make an expenditure to any person, either to vote or withhold his vote, or to vote for or against any candidate Shall be fined under this title or imprisoned" We could call it 18 U.S. Code § 597 - Expenditures to influence voting

NEW: A new audit by the U.S. Postal Service’s Office of Inspector General found a lack of training for post office staff, deficiencies in how ballots were tracked and errors leading to delays. Experts say it raises questions ahead of the midterms.

On the other hand, they appear too incompetent to accomplish anything positive, which perhaps explains why the lion's share of MAGAt "policy" consists in breaking or stealing things.

Tell me a fun fact.

Can you imagine the state that says to the Postmaster: "yes, feel free to throw out our votes at will, based on some vibes your machine may get about the batch into which some vote chanced." I don't see re-elections of such officials in such states.

Allison Gill@muellershewrote.com

Just an FYI: the judge didn’t block the USPS ballot scanning rule from going into effect, she blocked them from making it mandatory. Make sure you have a back up plan to vote.

No rule of law, just consistent support for authoritarian oppressions.

Canada has recruited dozens of researchers away from US universities. 48 out of 64 chair recipients in a government program worth $500+ million are coming from US institutions like Harvard and MIT. 🧵

So, incumbent officials would decide whether to throw out the mailed votes of their potential opponents? SMH. Under the Rule of Law, the answer would be simple: there's no federal authority to interfere with elections and no federal authority to choose not to deliver postal customers' mail.

Allison Gill@muellershewrote.com

The republicans just suggested if the judge makes the USPS rule optional - not mandatory - for states, that she let USPS reject non compliant ballots for the states that choose to voluntarily participate. The judge asks “do a test run on this election”???
