I wasn't expecting a blog from Chris till nest week, but interesting reading, particularly his thoughts on the Jason Arday case and how it shines a light on polarised Britain.

This post is unavailable.

As a fellow "olde tyme" academic (now emeritus professor), I was horrified by the Arday tragedy and the weaponising of it by the right-wing press (obscene but not unexpected). I urge you to read this thread from Steve, which eloquently expresses my thoughts, and I agree wholeheartedly.

Ok, some thoughts, as an olde tyme academic, on the Arday tragedy. First, allegations about causes. We don't know what was in his mind, but many people are keen to blame him, or woke lefties/academia, or the media. Some people are absolutely certain that the media are faultless. 1/

New post: Unpicking the legacy of neoliberalism mainlymacro.blogspot.com/2026/08/unpi... Defending neoliberalism today beyond the familiar tropes has become so difficult because so many of the claims made for it 40 years ago are questionable at best and in some cases clearly untrue.

A bit different to my normal "tweets", but for those interested in psychology and psychopaths, both Gale and I had the misfortune of being married to one. A 🧵

Sean Danaher@seand5.bsky.social

I have just finished Treason From Within by Gayle Frances Larkin (@gaylefranceslarkin.bsky.social), who was married to Zach. This was of particular interest as I was also married to a psychopath, M, for 6 1/2 years in the 1980s www.thetablereadmagazine.co.uk/a-true-story...

In my case, I thought the circumstances were so extreme that no rational court would award custody to M - I was wrong and didn't see my son for 32 years. In Gayle's case, she heroically stayed the course.

The good news is that both Gayle's daughter and my son have turned out to be wonderful human beings. We both have excellent relationships with our children, unlike their other parents. For Gayle's story, read the book. I have documented mine too. DM me if you are interested, and I can send a link.

Both of us had children. In my case, a son who was being so emotionally abused by M; he was on the Leeds Child Protection Register. In Gayle's case, a daughter who she could not allow to be alone in Zach's presence. Both were trapped in our respective legal systems.

In Gayle's case, the South African system would automatically grant custody to the father up to age 21. In my case, the system would award custody to the mother in all but extreme circumstances.

Psychopathy is often dramatised and misrepresented in movies, etc., though a good representation of a certain type of psychopath is Anton Chigurh in the Coen Brothers' "No Country for Old Men", played brilliantly by Javier Bardem. Certain traits are present, but the hallmark charm is absent.

The truth is that psychopaths walk amongst us. This graphic is a good summary, and if marks from zero to ten were given for each characteristic, M would score close to 80/80. I think Zach would have scored lower, but he also suffered from schizophrenia and was far smarter than M and more dangerous.

I can’t stop thinking about Anthropic’s destructive book scanning. Obviously, it’s gross. People love books. Destroying books makes people mad. Even books they don't actually care about. AI companies know this, that’s why they try to keep their weird behavior a dirty little secret.

When an entire arena boos you for telling the truth, you quickly learn who has courage. Kris Kristofferson walking onto that stage and standing beside Sinéad as the insults rained down remains one of the most powerful acts of human decency I’ve ever seen. Three years resting in peace 🙌🏼🤍🙌🏼

The Cameron target [net migration] did not create the far right, but it did help entrench the idea that lower net migration was the obvious test of political seriousness. Once that was accepted, every failure became evidence of betrayal.
