Brazil rejected Bolsonaro. Serbia's students beat Vučić. Machado is home in Venezuela. What a day for democracy.

None of these was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. Elon Musk was. Odd, that.

For #BlackHistoryMonth, we're highlighting the achievements of the Black scientists, mathematicians and engineers who have made their impact on the modern world. Read our thread below.

So I just asked both Google and Claude if there was a bubble (I typed out a detailed argument in the prompt - not just the question). Google: 'yep' Claude: 'nope, I have quibbles with your argument'.

Don't get too cocky, the average person has more than zero Nobel prizes, too

This story has surfaced again. I have a real 'I wouldn't start from here' problem with it. If you frame your analysis using Heidegger and phenomenology I will not take you seriously in the first place. You might arrive accidently at true conclusions,

I had not realised that Michel Foucault and Winnie-the-Pooh were practically the same age: Winnie-the-Pooh was first published by Methuen on 14 October 1926, and Michel Foucault was born in Poitiers on the following day.

So the cross examination phase of Sussex v. Redvers finished today, and, at least from where I am sitting, it looks not so much like a car crash for Sussex, as a failed reentry. Curious to see what they do on Monday.

From the life, I am sure. She would not have been seen dead in front of an easel other than in a silk taffeta gown (Elizabeth Vigee le Brun presumably inherited the hat). bsky.app/profile/dran...

Self-portrait with two pupils, oil on canvas (with preparatory chalk study), exhibited at the Salon of 1785 by Adélaïde Labille-Guiard (1749-1803), first female artist to set up studio for her students at the Louvre; member of Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture. Met Museum, New York

Haven't encountered Arnold in years. Would like to be able to say I owned a copy of A Study of History, but I mislaid it at some point. My father was a fan, and I inherited his copy, but didn't actually read much of it (probably read more Pieter Geyl being dismissive). bsky.app/profile/fore...

Arnold Toynbee predicted China might “inherit the Third World” by becoming its primary model for development. foreignpolicy.com/2026/10/09/c...

Just learned that a local patisserie has won the prize for the best mille-feuille in France. As such it is my duty to go and buy some.

The only thing I have to add to the insane Englishness debate that is currently happening in the UK is that I never found anything that described the strangeness and, dare I say randomness, of identity better than this Peter Grant quote from @benaaronovitch.bsky.social’s River of London series:

Serious question: if LLMs are so good at mathematics, why does this not flow into software synthesis. The mathematics of correct software construction is well understood, and the proofs are not deep. The current issues with LLM scripting tools would disappear. Why has this not happened?

This man was chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany. How someone could retire from that to become this is genuinely beyond my comprehension. bsky.app/profile/ilko...

Zufällig an Putins Geburtstag hält sich dieser Mann in Moskau auf, hält eine beklatschte Rede und unterstützt so aktiv das Morden der russländischen Faschisten in der Ukraine. Er ist ein unanständiger Mensch.
