Attended a birthday party this evening. Fun to celebrate 10 years with all our partners in bringing evidence to policy for Tennessee education.

The *median* daily high temperature for Nashville (BNA) in September 2026 was 95 degrees (+7 over 2025). There were 22 days over 90 degrees and 16 over 95 degrees. To date, October's median is +5 over 2025. Nashville can be warm, but this is not Arizona.

Saw my first #Waymo fail IRL yesterday - a traffic light was stuck on yellow for some reason, so the two Waymos at the front of a long line of traffic were dutifully waiting it out

“Transitioning out of her role”

PBS News@pbsnews.org

The White House confirmed that press secretary Katie Zacharia is transitioning out of her role after less than a week on the job. Speaking to reporters Friday, President Donald Trump said he gave her the option to leave, saying, “Maybe it’s not for her.”

I find it a bit odd that there is a roughly equal probability that my NYT news alert will be a massive earthquake somewhere, a terrorist attack, etc., or Selma Blair acted unruly on a plane, the principal from Saved by the Bell died, etc.

A half-a-million dollar share of a Nobel might seem like a nice surprise on its face but actually Hall has had it in his budget forever.

A quick bump on this ask, re: supporting international students in higher ed. I'm serving on a department committee trying to understand this better.

Mark Chin@mememedianmode.bsky.social

Colleagues: what are your institutions doing to support international students given the threat to F-1 Duration of Status (D/S) and new CPT restrictions? I’m especially concerned about impacts on PhD timelines and optional summer internships. Would value hearing how others are responding.

Unlike students on the traditional margin who don't seem to be better off at a SPHS (Abdulkadiroglu et al), Mike finds a positive impact for Discovery students on certain outcomes (GPA lags initially but catches up). Displaced students are no worse off. So, Discovery appears to be a net positive.

This truly is horrifying. Not only is he unlawfully spending OUR money on a political ad, the whole point of the ad is that roughly half of the country consists of enemies who must be conquered.

absolutely demented. like a scene from a horror movie

You don’t gut the country's capacity to measure what's happening in its schools because you care about improving them. Guardian article below.

In April, the Republican state assembly in Tennessee enacted a law requiring all public schools observe a “victims of communism” day in November

Wow, this is wild stuff. Inside the school Texas taxpayers will be funding as part of their statewide voucher program

Benjamin Riley@benjaminjriley.bsky.social

SPECIAL REPORT Last month, Alpha School invited people to follow student social media accounts "if curious about life in our high schools." I accepted their offer. What I've found shocks me. Forget the AI and ask instead: Is Alpha Schools a cult? Follow along for a summary of my findings.

Finally read this article on the rapid growth of the Alpha School under the Texas school voucher program--only after the state's charter board rejected its (dubious) model. ProPublica is really doing outstanding work on how voucher programs are actually playing out on the ground.

ProPublica@propublica.org

NEW: The Texas education board, which approved most charter applications over the last decade, rejected the AI-driven Alpha School’s pitch last year. Now Alpha School’s private campuses are set to receive taxpayer dollars through the state’s new voucher program. w/ @texastribune.org

Today, I started the day debate prepping with my team, then watched my daughter’s soccer game, went grocery shopping, watched my son’s football practice, and made us all dinner. But yeah, I’m totally a “radical lunatic.”
