I have been using MapQuest for years. To me it is like the old AAA trip quick maps that I used to get for road trips. Or is that quick trip maps, I forget. And I do not have a Google account and don't care to get one.

Given that HERE shows "Gulf of America", I'd assume they are just that far behind on their GNIS processing pipeline. (disclaimer: I used to work for HERE and "improving terrible data pipelines" was a full time job for several of my coworkers; I mostly did releng on the search engine :-)

There's not even a law passed to make the name change legal. It's just some creep writing a memo. People need to stop treating executive orders like they apply to anyone other than the chuds who work for the guy. The constitution is very clear about who gets to write law.

Right now, every issue other than stopping fascism is a distraction. If we fail to defeat it, every other cause becomes moot because the rights and institutions needed to fight for them may no longer exist. Talk about fascism. Expose it. Organize against it. Stop it. Scream it from the rooftops!

I tried deleting both Apple & Google maps to use only Map Quest, but 1 issue I am running into is when I look up a business on the web and then I click on the map to see the cross streets or zoom in it wants to kick open Apple or Google Maps to do that. Anyone know a way round that?

No; they paid Google Maps for the connection. (Or they may have the free account version, but it's not "here's map" but "here's our Official Google/Apple Map Tie-In widget.") I know that, 15-ish years ago, G'Maps accounts for businesses started at $10k/month. I have no idea where they are now.

As of Sept. 4, 2026 the National Weather Service still identifies it as Lake Ontario on their forecast maps, so take that DJT! Apple and Google wimped out bigly.

So how many companies is it now who learned an expensive lesson that betraying your customers to please these right wing bigots can cost you everything? Every month or so a new one

They use the same api calls that Google does, so you're getting the same info from your local bus/train routes, etc. SO why not do it, even if it seems performative? Send a message!

It's still Lake Ontario in the rest of the world. Both on Google maps and Apple maps. Even though they're only doing it to appease him, I'm not sure non-compliance would be appropriate. It's not really for a private company to decide on naming issues.

I tried, but Mapquest is unusable. Numerous pins in the completely wrong place near my house, businesses that closed a decade ago, many many missing.

Just tried MapQuest. Apparently their mapping in my area is absurdly incomplete. Stores that have been there for *decades* don't have labels on the map. Even searching for "groceries" is pretty hit or miss. I'd love to use another mapping provider, but... they gotta deliver on the mapping!

Other labels are pointing to the wrong building entirely. Sometimes things don't even come up when searching. This is a shockingly bad experience for a new user. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

people forget that an Executive Order is NOT A LAW. The only entities that must comply with an EO are the gov agencies that fall under the Executive branch. So all these corps. that are complying with his shit are doing so bc they’ve got contracts and he has something to hold over their heads.

Here's hoping MapQuest uses their new popularity to improve their app! I'll use it whenever I can, but its current state really doesn't live up to the competition. Their app icon also looks surprisingly awful.
