New art video just dropped! The 7 Trillion Dollar Seance 🔮 This is meant to be performed live, recited in front of the video at conferences, museums, public events. It got a standing ovation at Tech Together in NYC. Your phone works but best on your largest screen. vimeo.com/1116289621 🧵

I also saw that the SF eyeball scanning store is now a shoe store, both are Sam Altman projects. Surveillance as fashionable is a narrative capture tactic. Look at how sovereign AI gets redefined here by Palantir.

Meanwhile in Sf, AI start ups are hosting watch parties for the documentary You can see everything, on truth and the personalities/inner worlds behind tech hype and its financing crimes. An inquiry (ironic/sincere?) so popular its hosted by multiple start ups at multiple theaters.

Contempt is the emotion underlying AI culture. This thinking is not an anomaly but a signal of the sick perspective shaping political realities. It is a condition of belonging in tech culture to see & sort everyone else as the Tenderloin. Tech necropolitics. brokeassstuart.com/p/y-combinat...

Scenes of flotsam and jetsam in the Bay Area. Some of the dog and pony show happening, safety theater, is in response to the public refusal & tech company backlash. It wasn’t expected I think. Watch as responsibility trends again and AI ethicists get hired back at companies that fired whole teams.

Stop AI was a flop. Pause AI was a bust. But oh now “Pace AI” that’s what they are going with? What next? Tickle AI? Don’t text back right away wait five minutes so you don’t seem so eager AI? Why not support existing lawsuits? Why not join existing movements already fighting the good fight?

@ali-alkhatib.com coined this phrase and has stickers :) Pop it on your signboards and march with it. Says it all really. It is a solid framing and a message to rally behind that can travel quickly as a narrative and makes sense to the public. It is the political economy of AI in 4 words

Optimist: The cup is half full Pessimist: The cup is half empty AGI optimist: We have to pour a gajillion gallons of water a minute into this cup or else it’ll never be sentient!

This is not a real store btw it’s more like AI vaporware which is very much business as usual here. New companies talk a big talk for attracting investors but the market or customers , concept, tech , deliverables are not ironed out and they drive investors with shock marketing

Effective Altruists scaled the ideology among AI researchers using crypto $. At one point, EA civil society was worth $40b. Rest of civil society is hopeful for IPO donations. Together these normalize a lot of sci fi ideas via cog biases capturing resources + attention from reality-based governance.

Lots of PR from tech companies promoting AI lately. How they view public opinion is out of touch &condescending. "Oh these users think AI is bad, they don't know it's good actually. I'll tell them." Don't empires often start their collapse when their power isolates them from learning/strategizing?

Researchers w different AGI beliefs agree on pacing agreements, a more palatable pause/stop AI. But the narrative is captured away from power they already have to organize, quit, unionize, whistleblow. Could we coordinate in the pandemic? climate? Depoliticization builds a big tent without stakes

In any sector, in any work you do, with any concern for any tool, company or state you can’t believe you are powerless. It isn’t humility to think the problem is bigger than your power to solve it but rather ego. Humility is in seeing collective power, in joining the work others are already doing.

The visual metaphor of this article's book chop video captures the current epistemic trashing by LLMs. I have seen so many book scanners before that are gentle and preserve books. I can't tell if it's real, it ought to be I guess? But unbelievably on the nose www.news.com.au/technology/o...

Effective Altruism is ramping up social media influencing for their ideology as... effective use of $ to fear monger for future lives saved in speculative fictitious futures but there is an EA event in SF every 3 days or so: picnics, walks, parties. That crypto bump a few years ago that poured money into the coffers of a lot of the tech mesmerized & hopeful for AGI folks is really significant in what narratives are dominant within these companies now. Growing this fantasy ideology via social media is a major pursuit.

We can disagree about AI policy, but when we are fundamentally talking about a technology that is a tool with limits & another group is talking about this same technology as a new God we are not having a conversation. There's no progress. Also they have more money than all other nonprofits combined

You can not have governance of a technology when the resources and funding for protecting and advocating for the public interest and basic human rights is diverted to fantasy sci fi whimsy. This is very confusing for decision making in the sector as many respected leaders are caught up in nonsense

The more you use a tool meant to sound human, the more confounded u may get in considering it intelligent/conscious. Is this why so many research papers overflow with anthropomorphic framing? Seeing respected researchers in the sector support sci-fi AI confirms their desires as fact.

A lot of AI enabled violence and harm has come to pass but I have to say I did not expect the public to reject AI at this level nor did I see how fast the momentum against data centers would build. Neither did the companies. Scrambling

Our model escaped and hacked! Unprecedented! Could there be anything incentivizing a nervous company as they lose their lead to a rival to make their tool sound so so naughty that it must be very smart. We can hardly control this monster AI! IPO coming soon! Sci Fi geeks doing PR again.

I’m leaning to narrative power of hating on AI by framing it as all destructive power as a way to draw in more interest and maintain an air of AI dominance when you aren’t really that great AI actually.

Companies are hiring AI governance people again after having pivoted away from accountability in the wake of LLMs. Why this sudden bloom after the first harvest withered on the vine? Because the public does not trust these companies and their tools and does not want their data centers.

The arts & what culture is and serves is fundamentally being reshaped towards a politically economy that in reality serves the interests of the powerful and decimates the arts. The loss of CCA, this $ direction does not serve artists but is a co-option of our ecosystem www.forbes.com/sites/michae...

Look to San Francisco, home of the tech booms & AI labs, to see how the febrile AI sector benefits ripple out to communities. My local CVS locks up the frequently shoplifted items: ramen noodles, baby formula, canned food. Rent for a 1bdrm apt nearby is $6500.

2 signs in the Bay Area capture different kinds of anger at AI tools, consequences & forms of community education. Swanky neighborhood sign's AI is optional, harming others, call to action is read more. The other sign's AI is for jailing, control, fear. It warns for safety. AI hits different.

How can I share in progress work with people if it is work I would not want put in an LLM. What kinds of thinking or creativity are accelerated while what kinds are thwarted? And more interestingly, what kinds of new forms will work need to take pushing new sociotech frictions?
