70 percent of the internet was vulnerable yesterday to very bad security flaws inside a coding language. Turns out, *one volunteer* is mostly responsible for maintaining that code & helping push updates. Yesterday Ondřej Surý saved the internet. So I called him up www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...

Sure, we should, if we can (many cannot). But as I keep pointing out, the government itself is making no provision at all. No stockpiles, no back-up, no alternative sources. It's individuating the response to a collective problem, and that never ends well. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

The candid, unguarded footage of RZA, naked from the waist up, quoting entire kung fu movies on his way to scale the Pyramids while over-indulging a naïve self-insert chancer, may be the quintessential document of a brilliant, weird, flawed man who has always been a touch more outsider than insider.

My concern with this is we'll end up recreating the failed supply-side approach to disinformation while ignoring the far more significant demand side. First is recognising the relationship between institutions, publics, and counterpublics have changed significantly.

Okay, let's be real here, Russia absolutely did interfere in the Brexit Referendum, but only in the same way all major world powers, including the US and EU, are constantly fucking about in each others elections and referenda, and always have been. That's literally just global geopolitics.

You're a child. You're cooking, you're making a snack. The salt mill falls from the counter and hits the floor. You know where this is going, if a tree falls in the forest etc. I feel as though you have to become a philosopher of evil as a parent in order to stay detached and curious.

coining it: 'aspirational evil' I think he's conceptualising the competence of evil here in terms of the capability to inflict impact on the world, which is one of the most impoverished definitions of competence I've ever encountered. If you don't care about law and regulation then this is easy.

spiciest quadrant: "souls are real but *only* AI has them"

Mind blown. Just discovered that Tim Simenon worked uncredited on Adamski's 'Killer' and an early version of Seal's 'Crazy'. 'Into the Dragon' was the first record I ever owned. 'Killer' was the first single, and 'Seal' the first album, that I bought with my own money - because I loved 'Crazy'. WTF

Eye popping. Court just unsealed Summary Judgment motions in New York Times v OpenAI / Microsoft. Easy to see why the AI companies had so many redactions (pink). Their own people wrote the lede for NYT, the "largest theft of labor in human history"... "more and more substitutive..." /1

The government must know full well that many people have neither the space nor the money to store extra food in their homes. It is individuating responsibility for a collective problem. As usual, it is the poorest and most excluded who will suffer from it. 🧵 www.theguardian.com/environment/...
