The SEC’s path to 9-3 teams making the Playoff continues to open up. Plus, does anybody here want to get fired? www.nytimes.com/athletic/772...
Also, the argument for a 24-team field is keeping more fan bases engaged late into the season. Well, it's late October, and lots of people still seem engaged!
The start of a friggin' World Series game is being held up because of a game between UCF and BYU, but sure, college sports needs federal intervention.

There's a good chance the SEC will have a glut of 9-3 teams. (I like the word glut.) How would the Playoff committee sort that out? That's the lead for a midseason SEC mailbag: www.nytimes.com/athletic/771...
Is Shane Beamer going to save his job? Where will Arch Manning be in 2027? Would Kentucky be ranked higher if it weren't Kentucky? Why is Texas A&M usually over-hyped? What happened to Vanderbilt? That and more in the midseason SEC mailbag: www.nytimes.com/athletic/771...
So far, the six SEC coaching changes are looking pretty, pretty good. SEC midseason coaching grades, from Will Stein (A+) to Ryan Silverfield (actually not bad!) www.nytimes.com/athletic/770...

Update: Stein indeed went for it. Cats failed. Then Oklahoma went three-and-out, punted. Moral of the story: Crazy decisions depending on the ineptitude of the Oklahoma offense are not crazy.
Far be it to doubt Will Stein, but is he really going to go for it rather than kick a field goal to go up 17-13 on Oklahoma? Does he realize he's playing Oklahoma's offense?
Auburn shocks No. 1 Georgia as college football’s top-ranked team loses for second straight week. Initial takeaways: www.nytimes.com/athletic/769...
Column: The SEC could have been a hero. The chance was right there. Instead it caved, the Big Ten won, and the unpopular 24-team playoff is on the way. www.nytimes.com/athletic/769...
The Curt Cignetti effect. And now the Will Stein and Bob Chesney effects. When coaches aren’t great right away, fans are worried - as we see at Auburn: www.nytimes.com/athletic/768...

For @theathletic.com, I, deep sigh, wrote about Arch again. www.nytimes.com/athletic/768...

The SEC has a clear top, a ‘cesspool’ at the bottom and a muddled middle: Vibes after Week 6: www.nytimes.com/athletic/768...
Did Georgia get a couple big, late breaks? Yes. But was it the better team on Saturday? Yes. On Georgia and a philosophical Kirby Smart, who has his best team since the national championship seasons: www.nytimes.com/athletic/767...
