‘explains’

Most billionaire wealth isn't in yachts or jewelry — that's just a few percent of it. Most is productive business capital: companies that employ people, build things, and fund research. Tax that wealth and you're taxing the businesses that employ us all. Cato's Adam Michel explains.

I don’t recall ever voting for the army and I am a bit tired of seeing the fuckers on TV explaining which forms of politics they will and will not tolerate.

1/2 You think that's bad. AI Fucked with Sarah Kendzior .. "There's an AI-generated "biography" of me that is just my book "The Last American Road Trip" plagiarized near verbatim and sold under the byline of a non-existent person."

So glad you enjoyed! You may also enjoy my further discussions of Machiavelli on my new podcast, Beforecast.

What are we going to do if it turns out that really sophisticated computers are conscious and what it’s like to be such a machine is just to be aware of a constant, but ultimately unbearable, electronic hum?

Note how easy it is for a president to revoke a guidance document. Zero process required. So, listening to Republicans complain about how our do-nothing Congress is entitled to rescinding these things through the Congressional Review Act is a little obnoxious. www.thenewlede.org/2026/09/epa-...

This whole issue is framed wrongly. As I've written: "Worrying that some migrants won’t pay their way is a displacement activity - an attempt to blame migrants for the failings of British capitalism." chrisdillow.substack.com/p/on-the-fis...

I’m not against e.g. state pension reform in the abstract but this piece reads very much like a version of lump of labour fallacy to me. Would be interested in @jdportes.bsky.social thoughts giftarticle.ft.com/giftarticle/...

to a certain extent you have to admire the harmony of form and content inherent in Tom Watson going to work for a company when nobody really understands what they do, everyone hates them, but for some reason we are stuck with them forever because of their important friends

“It is the substantive ‘time’ which mystifies us. If we look into the grammar of that word, we shall feel that it is no less astounding that man should have conceived of a deity of time than it would be to conceive of a deity of negation or disjunction.”

From the campaign against IHT being waged on X, it would seem that the country is replete with wealthy old people who live on tins of sardines and never go out out on holiday just to maximise the wealth they can pass on to their children.

It’s astonishing to discover just how many wealthy people had it not been for their goal of enriching their children after their death would have been perfectly content to live idly in tents on scrubland foraging for scraps.

I've published a review essay for @ssir.org of Mariana Mazzucato's recent book, The Common Good Economy. I'm broadly sympathetic to her approach, but discuss some issues about power, and the challenges posed by those who are committed to acting *against* the common good. ssir.org/books/review...

ssir.orgArriving at Collective Power (SSIR)In The Common Good Economy, Mariana Mazzucato is clear-eyed on where we need to go, but the next step is understanding the power structures that prevent us from getting there.
