at an offsite with most of Tailscale engineering, product, and design, and _goddamn_ I love this team. what an amazing set of people I get to work with!

gotta play for high scores in peak download rate

ari velazquez 🌯@ari.velazquez.fyi

steam: this game you've had installed for two years but never played has an update. we'll download it next week me: no you'll download it right now motherfucker. and i will sit here and watch it download. steam: so you're gonna play it? me: fuck you

this #monktoberfest talk about the web and “view source” and people using Processing/p5.js to teach coding…boy is it landing with me very fond memories of working with @humphd.bsky.social on the precursors of that. having no idea what we were doing but it being so clear that we needed to do it

I have my bones to pick with Shoppers Drug Mart as a store and economic phenomenon, but I will say that their app-and-SMS prescription management system is very welcome. it definitely contributes meaningfully to my success at the task of staying appropriately medicated.

landed at Logan *just* in time to miss the 11:35 bus to Portland (and thence to @monktoberfest.com ). maybe I can find some COVID tests at the airport while I wait for the next one, because of course I forgot mine

tired: p(doom) wired: p(Bond Villain)

I'm coining a piece of AI safety terminology that I'd like to refer to as the Bond Villain problem. As a field, AI safety heavily leverages sci-fi pretty heavily, so I figure this should be fine.

for me, a key part of getting up to speed as a new leader is meeting 1:1 each person in my new org. this takes a fair bit of time: about 50 hours at @tailscale.com, many thanks to my intrepid EA for the calendar heroics! it's worth it, though, for a few reasons: 🧵

4. have an ice-breaker for future discussions I've found that after someone has met with me 1:1, they're much more likely to reach out to me for help when they need it. being directly accessible to everyone in the division is important to me, and maybe it's just correlation, but it seems to help

once I've met with everyone, I usually "play back" the major themes of what I've learned/heard, and my take on them. pretty much everyone wants to know what their leader is thinking, and this is a good moment to reinforce my priorities and how they've been impacted by the conversations recommended!

2. get input on where I should be spending my attention a favourite question for this is "if you had a magic wand with one charge in it, what would you change at Tailscale?" people bring up processes, hated parts of the code, strained relationships, sources of operating friction, and more

3. let people ask me questions 1:1 I make myself available to answer questions at all-hands meetings, syncs with each team, etc.--but there are sometimes questions that people are more comfortable raising in a 1:1 setting. maybe a relationship issue. maybe something that felt too "small" for an AMA

1. learn in detail what it's like to work in the engineering team, from the people who are doing it it's not like I think my managers and directors are lying to me, but it's different to hear it directly from the people living the life.

I’ve seen some of this stuff already and it’s great. Such a treat to work with Andree and the PAM team and see them bring this capability to life.

Andree Toonk@atoonk.bsky.social

The last few months have been a whirlwind. We’ve been heads down integrating Border0 into @tailscale.com and I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve built in such a short time. Next week at TailscaleUp, we get to share it! I’ll be talking AND demo'ing PAM and what’s next. tailscale.com/tailscaleup?...

headed to Charlottetown for the weekend with one of the kids and a friend of theirs have we planned what to do? other than two meals, we have not. if you have thoughts, I welcome them!

Every developer who implements a window where the options are “maybe later” or “yes” should be thrown in a gulag forever.

@tef.bsky.social is 100% right here. if it breaks in CI it needs to break on the developer’s machine, and as early as possible. on-save for linters is good. post-push-after-waiting-for-CI-to-set-up is bad. be good, not bad

if it's that important, your build scripts should be breaking if it's part of the ci / test, it's where the worst people you nkow have set up the defaults, they're terrible, and all the code is now filled with // lint:ignore around "calling await in a loop"

In 1968, 13-year-old Mary Beth Tinker was suspended from school for wearing a black armband to protest the Vietnam War. We took her case all the way to the Supreme Court, which ruled in favor of Mary Beth and students’ right to free speech 56 years ago today.

today, another installment in "hmm, I wonder why this tailscale package update [for which I am connected over Tailscale] is taking so long to complete..." I'm glad that shit Just Works, because my brain is apparently mush

goddamn it Elgato why is your software SO BAD. I’m going to have to open up my key light and put my own controller in there so it doesn’t fall off the network every other day
